Chapter 15: Motivation Provided
After seeing that even Kalli could take them down with a single shot of her pistol, the other students were becoming more confident, and they rushed to hurl spells and skills at the other Imps.
There were dozens of them in the compound, even after the soldiers had begun to kill them.
Fireballs lit up the compound with an orange glow that contrasted oddly with the red light of the altered sky, while white bolts of lightning seared at the retinas.
The magical battle, with its flashy effects, felt almost detached from the grim brutality of the melee warriors fighting the demons, or the soldiers taking cover to provide suppressive fire.
It was almost like three different battles, intended for three different worlds. But all against the same targets.
{Rat Demon Killed} Quest Completion 32 Percent
Kalli frowned as she realized that not all the students were likely to get a proper kill. Some of them were hiding from combat, and they would miss out on the prize pool.
There was nothing she could do about that when they couldn’t see or hear her.
Instead, she sat on the wall and aimed for the heads of the injured rat demons that came her way. It was the final kill that mattered, and while she had already guaranteed herself a prize, it was better than letting people with terrible aim waste bullets.
{Quest Completed} 18 Heroes and 1 Coordinator earned rewards.
The students all stared at the message. Wasn’t Kalli’s class called a Coordinator? Was she some sort of special type? Well, at least they had almost all gotten their rewards.
{Reward Granted} 3 System Points, 1 Common Grade loot box.
Kalli smiled as she got the rewards.
She was now at 252 points, but more importantly, she had a reward box.
The box opened smoothly, and then vanished as she reached inside to take the prize.
{Rusty Spiked Bat} Common Grade blunt weapon. Deals 20 damage for all awakened users.
Nice, a weapon that she could use.
It looked like a blood stained baseball bat, with thick rusty nails driven through it. But it did nearly as much damage as a short sword. That was the important part, as she could now effectively fight whatever might come to the Academy next.
She still didn’t have skills that would help her in battle, but she could fight.
"Clean up the bodies, don’t let them rot in the compound. Someone run a toxin test on that boar. If it’s edible, I want to know. How are our casualties?" The Commander was shouting.
"Minor injuries among the students, healing is underway. Six of our officers were lost in the first ambush, but I don’t see any casualties among the enlisted men." one of the police explained.
The Commander nodded.
"There are still monsters outside the walls, and we need to clear them before they can multiply or pack up. Students, split up and join the special forces teams. We need the heroes on our side.
Open whatever prize it gave you for the last battle and pick a team."
Kalli climbed back down the wall to join the main group, and Sanchez waved her over to join his team.
"There are four special forces teams, we will take five each."
Kalli shook her head. "Taking five each makes it even, but it’s better if you leave the ones who were too scared to fight here to defend the Academy. If they panic and bolt while the team is fighting outside, they could get everyone killed."
The Sergeant winced as he realized the danger.
"I just hope that we can get another of those quests. It gave me a whole case of ammunition. A thousand rounds of ammunition is no joke. And I can store it away without putting it in my backpack. Some sort of [Munitions] storage option from my class."
"The other teams aren’t going to have it easy. Your teams only have one other member with a class, right?"
Sanchez nodded. "The Commander."
That was even worse, as the Commander was defending the base, so the other three teams would be relying entirely on the students. Still, they were elite soldiers. Highly trained, utterly lethal.
Far better fighters than the students could hope to be.
The disadvantage lay in limited ammunition and reduced damage. Even if Kalli found more weapons like her bat, they still only worked for awakened users.
Perhaps the others could get the status with enough kills?
Condemning them to the fate of cannon fodder was just too pathetic of an existence. At the very least, she could still survive with the skills that she had received. They didn’t even have that advantage.
Sanchez gathered his team and sent them to inform the other team leaders that the students who didn’t get a box were to be left at the Academy.
Reggie, Derek and Yara came to join Kalli with the special forces team.
"We will go with just the four of us. There are only two other proper healers, so the team without one gets an extra mage." Reggie explained.
"So, we get three warriors, a healer and me? Alright, that works. The Sergeant is an excellent shot, and I’ve got one more magazine for this pistol I borrowed. Plus, I’ve got a nice spiked bat."
Yara frowned. "Uh, I hate to mention this, but aren’t we going to attract a lot of attention? Like, you can’t just go shooting all over town. Everyone will hear it. Not just the monsters, but the people who think we might be able to save them."
The soldiers smiled, and gestured to their rifles. "Special forces. All our rifles and pistols are fitted with suppressors. You won’t hear them from more than a block away. Not with this much background noise." fɾeewebnoveℓ.co๓
"Oh, that’s helpful."
Kalli examined the healer, who had blood on her clothes, and blood on the staff in her hands. It was topped with an ankh shaped symbol, and she had clearly been using it as a blunt weapon.
"No time to waste. Let’s move out. We’re going to clear every side of the Academy for four blocks. Any monsters we see must die. Then we will return to the Academy to wait and rest.
One hour time limit."
Sergeant Sanchez was deadly serious, and the students nodded.
They were all nervous about going outside the walls, and particularly about being let back in if things went poorly. But they really did have to do this.
{Coordinator, do you wish to issue a Quest?} Minimum difficulty Hard (10 Points to activate)
{Quest Activated} Clear the neighbourhood. Kill all the monsters in the immediate vicinity of the Academy. Warning: This is a Hard Tier quest, please prepare appropriately.
{Reward} 1 uncommon grade loot box per member who deals damage or heals an ally during the quest.
The Sergeant stared at the message, mentally calculating the odds that this was a coincidence.
It seemed unlikely that the quest would appear just because he said something.
But not impossible.
He had fairly good intuition, but it felt more prophetic than intuitive that there would be a quest for exactly what they were planning to do next the moment that they arranged to do it.
