Chapter 59: six mana cores
The next moment, Hector headed over to the corpse he had just killed. He quickly took off its outfit and put it on himself.
Now, after disguising successfully, Hector opened the door and followed the other demons.
His plan was to find the room where he could open most of the cages around the mountain.
He believed there had to be a room like that. Otherwise, he would use another plan.
He quietly frowned when he noticed a demon wearing a unique outfit. That bastard was one of the prominent ones here.
(Stupid! Why do they always have to wear different outfits?)
Hector continued to observe that demon, and after ten minutes, he saw him heading toward a room.
But Hector didn’t act right away. He wanted the right timing; after all, he had already lost many days on this mission.
Just a few seconds later, that head demon left the room and ordered some nearby demons to drag something inside.
"Hey, you... drag the humans to my room," the head demon said.
Hector nodded and ran over to the other demons. He randomly picked a dead human and dragged it into the room.
The head demon frowned and asked,
"Are you a newbie? Your face looks unfamiliar."
Hector nodded.
"Yes, sir."
The head demon said in a pleasant voice.
"You’re very strong. With five mana cores, you should be standing much higher. But don’t worry, just keep working hard. I hope I’ll see you in another position someday."
Hector nodded.
"Thank you, sir."
(It seems my high mana cores confused him.)
Two hours later, after he finished his work, he began to carry out his next move.
Since there were very few demons on labor duty, Hector quickly slipped toward the head demon’s room.
"Hey, newbie, why did you suddenly come into my room?"
The head demon showed a clear sign of anger on his face, but he quickly turned serious when Hector drew his sword.
His voice rang out coldly.
"What do you want?"
Hector shrugged and lunged at the demon. With the power of five mana cores, someone with four had no chance against him.
He delivered a downward slash, cutting off the demon’s right hand. Then he pressed the tip of his sword close to the demon’s throat.
"Release the chimera."
The head demon’s face twisted in disbelief, then he smirked.
"No! You can’t threaten a head demon."
Bang!
"I said... release the chimera."
The head demon’s face bruised after Hector’s slap. He shivered and nodded.
"The controlling tool is in another room. I need to go there."
Hector frowned.
"Order a demon outside. Tell them to bring the tool to your room."
The head demon gulped, then agreed. He hurried to the door and shouted,
"Guard! Bring me the tool from the twentieth room, right now!"
A demon asked while scratching his head,
"Which one, sir?"
The head demon shouted.
"I said take the tools for me. If not, I’m gonna kill you."
Hector carefully put his sword to the head demon’s throat. He didn’t want him spouting any nonsense to warn the other demons... at least until the cages were opened.
10 minutes later.
"Here, sir." The demon placed all the tools in the head demon’s room before leaving. The head demon took them and carried them to his room.
"Quickly!" Hector roared.
The head demon activated the tools. Right then, the whole labor area echoed with sound.
"Warning! Warning! Warning!"
The head demon chuckled and glanced at Hector.
"Sorry. Once the cages open, the warning sound also echoes... You’ll die."
Hector only frowned before finishing the bastard off.

Then he quickly headed for the exit of the labor area. There was no reason to stay here anymore.
He used [Dance of Shadow] and fled to the mountain’s basement. Then he climbed up a tree and observed his surroundings.
The hordes of chimera had been released.
"At least, my plan’s succeeded."
Soon enough, the chimera hordes began to rampage through the place. Hector smirked and glanced at the walls around the mountain.
At this rate, the last line of defense would be broken. He could tell Roy had done his job well when he heard a distant boom from the city.
The chain of explosions happened one after another.
Hector jumped down and prepared to kill the chimeras. After all, they also carried mana cores for him, so he wasn’t about to waste this chance to strengthen himself.
He lunged at the chimeras and swung a series of slashes, finishing the monsters.

(Hope Carl will escort the NPCs here safely.)
As planned, Carl had been given a mission. He would escort the NPCs who were capable of drawing the map to this place. Once the chaos broke out, they would have a chance to do it without facing much trouble.
"No, he’ll do it well."
Hector knew what kind of person Carl was. Even if he was a bit stupid, as long as Hector gave him clear instructions, Carl would get it done.

"They’re over there!" Hector sprinted toward Carl’s team and shouted.
"Move. I’ll escort you guys. No need to stay alert, it’ll only slow you down."
Carl and the NPCs nodded and quickly ran toward the top of the mountain, while Hector cut down the chimeras blocking their path.

30 minutes later.
Hector began to show signs of fatigue. For sure, he had been fighting too many chimeras without taking a rest.
(Damn! It’s too much.)
A chimera swung its claws at Hector, aiming to cut him in half—but a few seconds later, its vision split instead.
Hector was already standing behind it and finished it off.
(The first time I’ve used [Clone Illusion].)
Hector smirked and shouted,
"Move! We don’t have much time. Once the chimera numbers go down, the demons will scavenge this place... by then, we won’t even have a chance to bring the map back to the legion."
Carl shouted back,
"I know! ...But damn, it’s too much!"
Hector nodded indifferently and kicked away a chimera that was trying to get close to the NPCs.
With a single movement, he rapidly killed the chimeras.

Carl could only widen his eyes at Hector’s swordsmanship. He had never seen anyone with skills like that, not even Violet.
To him, Violet had always been number one—but now, his thoughts had changed a little. He even felt a hint of admiration for Hector.
It felt strange to him.
"Commander! Your swordsmanship is incredible!"
Hector clicked his tongue. He didn’t expect someone to say something so straight out of a protagonist.
"Alright. Don’t flatter me. Focus on your mission."
20 minutes later.
Hector knelt down, using his sword to support himself. He glanced at Carl and the NPCs—they were safe.
"It’s good."
He summoned his system screen.

"It still lacks a bit." Hector frowned. He turned to Carl and said,
"Stay here for a bit. I’ll be back." freewēbnoveℓ.com
Carl nodded, focusing on protecting the NPCs as if they were his own parents.
Hector gave a brief nod before running along the slope of the mountain. He had just killed ten chimeras—enough to reach six mana cores.
At that level, he didn’t fear any commander in the legion, except Violet. With this, he could move on to the next step within the legion.
Ten minutes later, Hector returned... his armor soaked in blood. Not only that, his killing intent was still spilling out around him.
Carl gulped when he saw Hector, then forced a smile.
"Congratulations, Commander. You’ve reached six mana cores."
Author’s note:
I’m very sorry to have to stop the series here. Obviously, money was the driving force when I needed it more than ever. Since the series couldn’t meet that need and didn’t seem to be popular in the webnovel community, I was forced to stop despite having established many detailed plans. However, in the future I hope to be able to rewrite this series, and I plan to expand the world setting more clearly.
