Chapter 58: Chimera?
After many turns, Hector had fought a lot of demons. Most of them couldn’t withstand even a single strike from him.
And in the last turns, Hector faced a chimera made of many parts taken from other animals.
Its power was immense. Its movements were hard to catch unless one possessed a series of skillful combat techniques.
Yet to Hector, who had fought countless monsters and was empowered by his blessings, defeating that chimera was easy.
Hector wondered about the chimera’s origin. After all, he had seen some familiar faces on its body—the faces of human soldiers.
It wasn’t much of a problem for him to recognize them, since most human soldiers were NPCs.
Not only that, he even saw some demon faces on it, which meant the demons in the city had been doing something terrifying.
"Tch! This is really uncomfortable," Hector clicked his tongue.
Then, he was finally recruited as a guard.
"Your mission is to protect this place. Don’t let any monster escape. Otherwise, this city will be in trouble," a demon said to Hector before leaving.
Hector approached the basement wall, where many guards were standing.
He glanced at the wall and asked one of the guards.
"Can you explain something to me? What exactly are we protecting?"
The guard shrugged.
"Don’t worry. You’ll know soon. For now, just wait. When our turn comes, I’ll explain everything."
Hector frowned, but he only let out a sigh.
One hour later.
The guard spoke.
"Newbie, come with me. It’s our turn."
Just like that, Hector and the guard strode deeper into the wall. With every step Hector took, he could hear creepy sounds echoing loudly.
He could tell they were coming from monsters—but why were the monsters kept here? Well, he would know soon. As soon as he arrived at the place behind the wall, beneath the mountain’s basement, he understood everything.
"Chimera."
Hector rubbed his chin and walked over to one of the cages beneath the ground. He looked down and asked the guard,
"We have to protect these chimeras?"
The guard sighed.
"Well, you could say that. The chimeras are experiments being carried out underground in this mountain. The failed products are released into this place. Our mission is just to guard them and kill them if any of them tries to escape their cage."
Hector nodded and glanced around. He could see many cages spread underground, which meant there were far more chimeras in this mountain than he could count.
"How many failed products are there?" Hector asked.
The guard answered,
"I’m not sure, but at least around 3,000 to 4,000. That’s why we have to guard them and get rid of them if needed."
Hector nodded again. freewebnoveℓ.com
"Understood. Thank you."
The guard shrugged.
"This is my mission. If you survive one night, we’ll receive a lot of money. I think I’ll rest after this night. Anyway, I think I’ve earned enough money to live. There’s no need to risk my life anymore."
One night passed.
Hector and Roy met in a secret place as they planned.
"I didn’t expect what’s behind the wall to be such a horde of terrifying chimeras." Roy scowled after hearing the tale from Hector.
Hector nodded.
"I think they’ve been researching chimeras to create an army. If they succeed, humans will lose for sure. An army willing to sacrifice itself is a treasure for the realm," Hector added.
"So, as planned, I’ll try to scout the terrain in the basement of the mountain to infiltrate the lab. In the meantime, you’ll set up the explosives and break the city’s defenses. Once the failed chimeras escape their cages, this city is done. And your mission will be even more complete."
"I believe that if you succeed, we won’t need to worry about contribution points... as long as we survive to the end of the campaign, the reward will be ours."
Roy smirked.
"That’s right. Being rich is good."
One night passed.
Hector swung his sword, finishing off the chimera that had just broken its cage to flee.

Hector glanced around. He saw a high-ranking guard heading to some place.
(It seems I’ve found a clue about how to release the chimeras.)

Hector kicked the beheaded head, sending it rolling across the ground, before peeking at the high guard dragging a cage filled with humans into the secret entrance.
Two nights passed.
Finally, he understood the schedule of the high guard. They always acted on odd days, around 3 p.m. or 5 p.m.
Hector chose the right timing.
He concealed himself in a nearby tree, then quickly leaped into midair. He caught the cage from a blind spot no one could see before the carriage dragged it into the underground.
After entering the lab, Hector quickly moved off and found a small room to rest and set up a plan.
"Hey! What are—" Before the demon could finish his words, Hector cut his head off.

Hector sneakily approached the window. From this spot, he could see everything in the lab.
Hector’s face twisted in disgust as he took it all in.
Mangled humans and demons.
Organs scattered everywhere.
The humans from the cage were dragged down, but their lives quickly ended when a demon chopped off their heads.
Their bodies were hauled into a special room.
So fuck. Humans were treated like literal animals—just like how humans once treated pigs and dogs before laying them on a table for nobles to enjoy.
Some slaves began to scream and run, but their fate was even worse, their bodies cut in half in the slaughter.
"Humans should know their place..." a demon said coldly before dragging a girl into the slaughter room.
Her screams mixed with broken sobs, echoing loudly.
Hector frowned.
(I can tell they’re splitting people into parts, then combining them into something stronger... a chimera.)
Author’s note:
I’m very sorry to have to stop the series here. Obviously, money was the driving force when I needed it more than ever. Since the series couldn’t meet that need and didn’t seem to be popular in the webnovel community, I was forced to stop despite having established many detailed plans. However, in the future I hope to be able to rewrite this series, and I plan to expand the world setting more clearly.
