Chapter 503: Chapter 503: Our Own People

Melody Summers still remembered how Winston Sheffield had flown into a rage and beaten Nina Summers after she caught him cheating.

Back then, Nina’s face had been swollen and bruised, her body covered in contusions. Many of the wounds were still seeping blood. Her attacker obviously hadn’t held back.

At the thought, Melody’s expression darkened, and she kicked Winston Sheffield hard several more times. ’A scumbag like him, who beats his girlfriend, should be prepared to get beaten himself the moment he throws a punch!’

Amidst Sylvia Lancaster’s terrified screams, Melody viciously kicked Winston’s body again and again with the hard toe of her rain boot, as if she were kicking a dead pig.

"AH! AH! OWW!... Stop hitting me!"

"OWW! I’m begging you, stop! AH!"

At first, Winston Sheffield let out a few wails, but when he realized begging was useless, he fell silent.

The electric current still seemed to be coursing through his body. He felt pain and numbness all over and was unable to get up. All he could do was curl into a ball and try to protect his head.

Sylvia had long since collapsed to one side in terror. She wanted to intervene but was afraid Melody would start hitting her, too.

As Melody kicked Winston in the stomach one more time, he felt a sharp pain and a wave of nausea. Then, with a BLERGH, he vomited a mouthful of fluid mixed with fresh blood.

Sylvia gasped when she saw it. ’If this keeps up, she’s going to kill him!’

’Is this world’s Melody a lunatic?! How can she be so vicious!’

Sylvia didn’t dare delay. Trembling, she pulled out her phone. She was too scared to make a call, so she quietly composed a text to the police instead.

Seeing Winston spit up blood, Melody frowned in dissatisfaction. "Hey, did you do that on purpose? You got my carpet all dirty! I guess you’re just asking for more!"

Then Melody grabbed Winston by the hair, clenched her fist, and slammed it into his face several times!

"AH! AH!"

Winston was hit in the temple, and his mind grew hazy. He subconsciously thought, ’There isn’t even a carpet here... If you want to hit me, just say it. Why make up an excuse...’

By the time Melody had finished venting her anger, Winston’s face was a mass of purple bruises. He looked even worse than Nina had.

Melody didn’t want a death on her hands, so she let him go for now.

Seeing her chance, Sylvia scrambled over to Winston. As she struggled to help him up, she shouted at Melody, "Melody Summers! How dare you assault a member of the Reconstruction Department! I’ve already reported you to the police. Y-You just wait! You’re going to prison!"

Melody sneered. Without a word, she strode forward, grabbed Sylvia by the hair, and viciously backhanded her twice. "I was so focused on him that I forgot about you, huh? And you still have the nerve to yell at me!"

With a sharp SLAP! SLAP!, Sylvia was left completely stunned by Melody’s assault.

Clutching her red, swollen cheeks, she stared blankly at Melody, her face a mask of utter disbelief—

’Melody actually dared to hit her!’

Seeing Sylvia get hit, Winston wailed anxiously, "No! Don’t hit her! Don’t you touch Sylvia!"

Now that the effects of the electric shock were wearing off, the pins-and-needles sensation racking Winston’s body had lessened considerably. He struggled up from the floor and limped toward Sylvia.

Winston and Sylvia helped each other to their feet. Seeing the clear handprints on Sylvia’s face, Winston’s heart ached.

He glared fiercely at Melody and threatened through gritted teeth, "I work for the Reconstruction Department. How dare you attack me... Just you wait. I won’t let you get away with this!"

Sylvia touched her swollen cheek, her gaze fixed on Melody with murderous intent. "That’s right," she said viciously. "Just wait for the police to come and drag you away!"

"Oh? Suit yourselves," Melody replied with a nonchalant smile, unfazed by their threats.

However, as if to prove Sylvia’s point, a series of urgent knocks suddenly came from the door.

Sylvia’s eyes lit up. She rushed to open the door, and the moment she saw the uniformed police officer outside, she burst into aggrieved tears.

"Waaah, Officer! Help us! This woman is insane! She’s trying to kill us! Waaah!"

Officer Tristan Tanner instinctively tried to calm her. "Are you the one who reported this? Please, stop crying. Just tell me what happened, nice and slow..."

The next second, however, he saw Melody Summers standing to the side.

Officer Tanner’s eyes widened slightly as he asked in surprise, "...What’s going on here?"

Before Melody could speak, Winston cut in, "Officer, we’re the ones who called the police!"

He pointed to his own face, then to Melody, and said through gritted teeth, "This woman assaulted me and my girlfriend! Arrest her, quick!"

Melody rolled her eyes. "These two were threatening to hit me. Was I supposed to just stand here and wait for them to do it? It was self-defense!"

Officer Tanner looked at Winston’s face, which had been beaten to a pulp, then at the unscathed Melody, and was momentarily speechless.

His eyes seemed to say, ’Why would you come to their home just to beat them up?’

As if sensing the officer’s thoughts, Melody quickly added, "This is my house! These two came in without my permission!"

Hearing this, Officer Tanner immediately turned a sharp gaze on Winston and said with a frown, "Is that true? That’s breaking and entering!"

Winston quickly waved his hands. "A misunderstanding! It’s all a misunderstanding!"

With that, he stepped forward, slung an arm around Officer Tanner’s shoulder, and whispered in his ear, "My friend, I’m with the Reconstruction Department. We’re on the same team! ...Let’s make a deal. You just pretend you didn’t see anything today..."

But before Winston could finish, Officer Tanner shrugged off the hand on his shoulder and said with a frown, "Who’s on the same team as you? You two are suspected of breaking and entering. You’re coming with me!"

***

Officer Tristan Tanner escorted Winston Sheffield, Sylvia Lancaster, and Melody Summers to the Emergency Office. The entire way there, Winston babbled nonstop, trying to get on the officer’s good side:

"Look, man, I’m really with the Reconstruction Department. Here’s my ID. The name’s Sheffield..."

"I just wanted to borrow unit 1706 for my father-in-law. I already spoke to Gavin Grant on your end about it..."

"We’re all on the same team. How about this: you just pretend you didn’t see anything today, and if you ever need anything down the line, just let me know. I’ll definitely sort it out for you..."

"Oh, right, the Planting and Transport Departments are hiring contract workers next week. Anyone in your family interested? I can pull some strings for you..."

Officer Tanner listened to Winston’s rambling in silence, not saying a word.

Meanwhile, Sylvia nestled meekly against Winston, shooting defiant glances at Melody from time to time.
