Chapter 472: Chapter 472: An Unexpected End
Seeing this, Saul Archer and Jay Lowell tensed up again, a subconscious fear flashing in their eyes.
It was almost a conditioned reflex for them. Whenever they saw Melody Summers reach into her pocket, their legs would go weak, terrified she would suddenly pull out a gun and send them on their way with a single shot!
But this time, what Melody Summers pulled from her pocket wasn’t a gun, but a small gold bar.
The moment they saw the gold bar, Saul Archer’s and Jay Lowell’s eyes went wide.
Melody Summers dangled the gold bar in front of the two brothers and said in a low voice, "Let’s make a deal. You do something for me, and in return, this gold bar is yours. How about it?"
As soon as Melody Summers finished speaking, Saul Archer and Jay Lowell were stunned.
’This is Gold!’
The price of gold had already surged to nearly 4,000, and the bar in Melody Summers’s hand had to be at least 200 grams!
Saul Archer and Jay Lowell glanced at each other and both swallowed hard.
Their savings and supplies had just been confiscated by the police, so they really needed this money right now!
Although he desperately wanted the Gold, Saul Archer knew there was no such thing as a free lunch.
He looked at Melody Summers with a hint of caution and asked tentatively, "What kind of deal? Let’s get this straight first—we’re gamblers, not thugs. We might organize illegal gambling, but we’re good people. We don’t do things like murder or arson!"
Hearing this, Melody Summers sneered and replied, "Don’t worry, I don’t need you to kill anyone or burn anything down. You just need to stick to your old trade."
As the brothers watched in confusion, Melody Summers pointed to the two words "Frank York" on the IOU and said in a low voice, "I have a grudge against this Frank York. I want you to find a way to drag him in, make him lose until he has nothing left and is drowning in debt."
Jay Lowell’s eyes widened in disbelief. He asked, "That’s it?"
’This task is way too simple. Melody Summers is offering such a huge reward; I thought she was going to ask me to do something difficult. But it’s just luring some pretty boy into gambling? This is practically a free bar of Gold!’
Melody Summers nodded and replied, "That’s right. As long as you can make Frank York lose everything and end up buried in debt, this Gold is yours."
Saul Archer’s gaze remained fixed on the Gold in Melody Summers’s hand. Though he craved it, he was still cautious. He hesitated before asking, "This isn’t some kind of sting operation, is it? You’re not just waiting to report us to the police, are you..."
Hearing this, Melody Summers frowned impatiently and replied, "I don’t have that kind of time! Stop wasting my time. Are you in or not?"
’If these two brothers won’t do it, I’ll find another way. In any case, I will absolutely not let Frank York off the hook.’
’This menace is a ticking time bomb. If I let him go, he’ll just come back to bite me one day.’
As soon as Melody Summers finished speaking, Jay Lowell nodded repeatedly and said, "We’ll do it! We’re in!"
’If we succeed, we get Gold worth hundreds of thousands. If we fail, we don’t lose anything!’
’Even if this is a trap set by Melody Summers, I’ll take my chances. Gambling isn’t a capital offense. If I get caught, the worst that can happen is a few months in jail, and I’ll even get free room and board!’
’This is a no-lose proposition. Only a fool would refuse!’
Saul Archer thought for a moment, then nodded and said, "Alright, leave it to us."
Hearing their agreement, Melody Summers nodded in satisfaction.
She thought for a moment, then said to the brothers, "Frank York’s situation is basically unemployment right now. Someone who has suddenly lost their source of income is at their most anxious and easily tempted..."
"Use all your tricks. Get him to take out loans, get him to rack up more debt, and make him mortgage that apartment in 1504!"
Saul Archer nodded. "Alright," he said in a low voice. "Don’t you worry."
Jay Lowell, however, clicked his tongue in amazement and asked cautiously, "...What on earth did this Frank York do to you...?"
’This woman is so ruthless,’ Jay Lowell thought. ’Could she and Frank York have had some kind of bad breakup? That Frank York guy looks like a total pretty boy, so could it be...’
Hearing this, Melody Summers gave a cold laugh and replied with pointed meaning, "He messed with my family. Of course I want him to die a horrible death!"
’Just thinking about that video makes me want to release the Leopard from my space and have it flay Frank York, rip out his tendons, and swallow him whole!’
Listening to Melody Summers’s words and seeing the dark, bottomless-well look in her eyes, Jay Lowell instinctively shivered.
The thought that they had just gone to the Summers Family’s home to collect a debt and had even threatened Melody Summers with her family sent a chill down Saul Archer’s and Jay Lowell’s spines!
The two of them once again promised in unison, "We understand!"
"Don’t you worry. We’ll definitely get the job done."
******
Melody Summers had originally thought that getting Frank York addicted to gambling would be a relatively long process.
She thought Frank York might be like Cameron Summers, struggling between repentance and gambling, slowly spiraling into the abyss to live a life of despair with no hope of escape.
But to her surprise, Frank York was nothing like Cameron Summers!
Just three days after she made the deal with Saul Archer and Jay Lowell, she received some news—Frank York had jumped off a building.
Frank York had leaped from the 15th floor the previous night. Chloe Sharp was nowhere to be found, and it was the Emergency Management Office that collected Frank York’s body.
Suicide by jumping wasn’t uncommon these days, but it was rare for someone to do it right as spring was beginning. The incident sparked a discussion in the residents’ group chat:
"4-1009 Lowell On Deadline: Someone else committed suicide!"
"4-1009 Lowell On Deadline: I was scared to death when I left my building today! There was a man’s body on the ground, and a lot of blood everywhere!"
"3-1007 Kiki, Mom of Two: @4-1009 Lowell On Deadline For real? Why would he kill himself now?"
"2-1908 Coco: It is weird. He made it through the cold winter, and now that it’s warming up, he killed himself. It doesn’t make sense..."
"3-1007 Kiki, Mom of Two: Oh my god, that’s so scary... You don’t think it was murder, do you?!"
"4-1503 Ryan Lawson’s Mom: @3-1007 Kiki, Mom of Two It wasn’t murder. The man who died was my neighbor. The police came by to investigate today and confirmed it was suicide."
"2-1908 Coco: @4-1503 Ryan Lawson’s Mom Did the police say why he did it?"
"4-1503 Ryan Lawson’s Mom: He was a video blogger. A couple of days ago, his account was permanently banned by the platform. The police said it was probably because he lost his source of income and couldn’t handle it, so he killed himself."
"3-1007 Kiki, Mom of Two: @4-1503 Ryan Lawson’s Mom Oh my god, that’s so tragic. Such a nice young man, gone just like that. How pitiful..."
"5-801 Lil Howell: So tragic! Why would they ban his account? That’s basically driving him to his death!"
