Chapter 2335: Chapter 2335: Carriage Driver

The shopkeeper twisted his head around, glared viciously at the waiter beside him, and cursed under his breath, "Look at you, is this how you do things?"

The waiter was utterly dumbfounded. The crying woman in front of him was fat and ugly, completely different from that peerless beauty on the carriage last night. And that woman only had one Little Kid with her; where did these three come from?

"Shopkeeper, this wasn’t the woman from last night."

"But she clearly said it herself, that she’s here to look for her husband, and you still dare say she isn’t?" The shopkeeper was furious, convinced the waiter was lying again.

The waiter felt he was being grievously wronged. They were clearly not the same person, but since Xuexue hadn’t gotten off the carriage at the time, only he had seen her, so now it was impossible to prove his point: "She really isn’t."

"Shut up." The shopkeeper’s head was pounding. This woman had come to look for her husband, but her husband had long since been slaughtered by him, and the meat was already almost all sold.

Xuexue, her face veiled, stood in the crowd watching the commotion.

That’s right, this woman was someone she’d paid to hire. Today she was going to take down this black inn and rid passing common folk of a scourge.

The shopkeeper of this black inn did have some brains; he never preyed on the local townsfolk. Because if local people disappeared for no reason, their families would definitely report it to the authorities, and then this black inn of theirs would be easily exposed.

Passing travelers were different. Even if they went missing, no one would know. So all these years, they had never once slipped up in this line of business.

This time, though, they’d run into Xuexue, and their luck had run out.

The shopkeeper beamed at the wailing woman and said, "Auntie, your husband did indeed leave last night. Our inn has been open over a dozen years and has a fine reputation; we wouldn’t lie to you. If you don’t believe me, you can ask everyone here."

The shopkeeper smiled with kindly brows and benevolent eyes, then turned to the onlooking townsfolk and asked, "Everyone, what do you say about my character?"

"Shopkeeper Tong is known throughout Fengcheng City as a good man. We know him; he wouldn’t do anything that defies heaven and harms reason." Everyone nodded in agreement.

The woman wiped her tears again, crying as she spoke. "What can you use as a guarantee? He just says with his bare mouth that my husband left, but the carriage driver is still here. How could he have left? Our home is thousands of li away from here. This black inn has clearly murdered my husband. If you don’t give us mother and daughters an explanation today, we’re not leaving, wuuu..."

Someone in the crowd asked, "The carriage driver? Where’s the carriage driver?"

When the woman heard that, she burst into loud sobs again. "It was that man just now who wasn’t wearing any clothes. Think about it: even the carriage driver has ended up like that, and my husband is neither seen alive nor found dead; he must have been killed."

Everyone was startled. They’d thought that man had a screw loose and that was why he had no clothes on. Now it seemed the matter was not so simple.

The way everyone looked at the shopkeeper changed, their eyes full of suspicion.

The shopkeeper panicked and said to everyone, "We’ve all lived together in this town for decades. You have to believe me."

The crowd said, "We can believe you, but what’s going on with the carriage driver? You’d better give a clear explanation."

The shopkeeper looked helpless. "How should I know? After he finished his meal last night, he left with his employer. Who knows what they might have run into on the road? How can you pin it on me?"

When the crowd thought about it, that did make some sense. They had only eaten a single meal here; you couldn’t blame the shop for everything just because of that one meal.

The woman started crying and making a scene again, pointing her finger at the shopkeeper and the waiter. "It was you who harmed my husband!"
