Chapter 2334: Chapter 2334: Furious

Some people looked furious, while others looked like they were about to burst out laughing; everyone’s expressions were different.

One man shook his head and sighed as he said, "Ai! Truly, morals are decaying and people’s hearts aren’t what they used to be. Our town actually ended up with such a disgraceful incident."

"Isn’t that so? In broad daylight, someone actually went out on the main street without wearing any clothes at all. This... this is simply scandalous!"

"From the way that person talks, he doesn’t sound like a local."

Xuexue found it strange. Just then, a waiter happened to be standing nearby, so she asked, "Hey, what’s going on out there? What are they all talking about?"

The waiter told her that early this morning, a man had been lying stark naked by the side of the street, fast asleep. Everyone who saw it exploded in an uproar. At first, no matter how they shouted, they just couldn’t wake him up. Later, someone splashed him with cold water, and only then did he wake up.

Xuexue’s heart gave a jolt. Could it be that middle-aged man who’d tried to catch her? She absolutely couldn’t let him get away; otherwise she’d have one more person to guard against in the future. With that thought, she took out a few dozen wen money from her person, placed them on the table, and ran out to take a look.

The street itself was rather sparsely populated.

But in one corner of the street, layer upon layer of human walls had formed.

No need to guess; that weirdo was definitely in the middle of the crowd.

Xuexue squeezed her way into the crowd with some effort, only to discover that the man wasn’t the middle-aged one, but the carriage driver. She let out a sigh of relief in her heart—good thing the middle-aged man who’d tried to grab her hadn’t escaped.

To be sure of the situation, Xuexue sent Xiao Taohong to yesterday’s restaurant to gather information.

In about Half a Cup of Tea’s time, Xiao Taohong came back to report that the middle-aged man had already been slaughtered by the black inn and made into human char siu buns—perfect in color, aroma, and taste—and the customers were happily feasting on them.

Xuexue felt her hair stand on end. Leaving a black inn like this around would only bring disaster upon people. Her eyes turned, and a plan slowly took shape in her mind.

Spring Breeze Building, at the front gate.

A plump woman with a round waist, dressed in silk clothes, was standing at the entrance with three Little Kids of four or five years old, sobbing and wailing...

"Ah wuuu... A black inn! This really is a black inn! Everyone come and judge this for me—this black inn got my husband killed! Ah wuuuuu...! Ah wuuu... How are the four of us mother and children supposed to live from now on?"

A bystander munching on gossip asked, "Auntie, what exactly happened? Tell us so we can hear."

The woman sobbed as she spoke, "We’re just travelers passing through. Yesterday our whole family ate here. Halfway through the meal, two of the Little Kids had stomachaches, so I took them to see a Doctor. My husband stayed here alone to finish eating. When we were done at the Doctor’s and came back, they told us my husband had already left. How is that possible? They must have killed my husband! Now our mother and children have no way to live! What are we supposed to do? Ah wuuuuu...!"

Once she finished, she broke into loud, unrestrained sobs again. The kids, seeing their mother crying, all burst into loud wails as well.

The scene of an orphaned widow with her children was miserably pitiful.

A matronly woman couldn’t bear it and gently said, "Auntie, maybe your husband really did have something urgent and had to leave? Don’t grieve yourself too much."

When the woman heard this, she cried even louder. "Impossible, how could that be? The four of us are still here! If my husband hadn’t met with an accident, how could he possibly abandon us?"

"This... this...!"

Everyone was suddenly at a loss for words. Indeed, the Shopkeeper’s explanation was a bit illogical.

This restaurant’s Shopkeeper and waiters numbered six in total. Hearing the commotion outside, they all came out. Seeing the woman dragging several Little Kids and pointing at their restaurant to raise a huge fuss, they were utterly stunned, all thinking, What on earth happened now, Aunt?

They were sure they had never seen this woman before, so why had she come to their restaurant to make a scene?

Later, from the woman’s crying and shouting, they learned that she was the very same woman who had stolen the carriage and run off last night.
