Chapter 175: Chapter 175: Wen Meng’s Class Reunion
「Meanwhile, in Mianzhou City.」
Wen Meng drove her G63 toward the suburbs.
The location for today’s class reunion was a farmhouse restaurant on the outskirts of the city, the kind known for the recently popular firewood chicken.
The restaurant was fully equipped with card and board games, a KTV, and other entertainment facilities. It integrated dining and amusement, offering an all-in-one service for its customers.
The G63 was moving relatively slowly, keeping right at the speed limit, which prompted many drivers behind her to find a chance to overtake her from the left.
But after seeing that the driver was a beautiful woman, many of the grumbling drivers instantly shut their mouths and sped off ahead of her in a flash.
Wen Meng wasn’t in a great mood. Ever since she got that call from Wu Yun, she’d felt like something of hers had been stolen. Even though she had mentally prepared for something like this, it was the first time she’d actually encountered it.
If the class president hadn’t insisted, Wen Meng wouldn’t have even come to this dinner, not even after paying the 100-yuan activity fee.
At the entrance of the farmhouse restaurant, Wei Xin was greeting the men and women getting out of taxis.
Although their high school class had focused on the liberal arts, there was still a decent number of boys, with a one-to-two ratio of boys to girls.
A white Mercedes G63 approached the entrance with its turn signal on. Wei Xin assumed it was just another customer of the restaurant and waved for the classmates chatting by the entrance to clear a path.
Wen Meng had already seen them. After a moment’s hesitation, she decided not to stop at the entrance, driving straight in to park in a designated spot.
"Class President!"
Hearing someone call her, Wei Xin turned to see Wen Meng walking over from the courtyard.
"Wen Meng! You’re getting more and more beautiful, and so elegant!" Wei Xin exclaimed with a smile.
Even though Wen Meng was just wearing a simple T-shirt and jeans, her poise from years of dance training and her perfect figure made her look like she had stepped right out of a catalog.
A few of the girls standing nearby had dressed up, but they couldn’t help but feel a little plain in comparison to Wen Meng.
Though envious, one of them still asked with a smile, "Wen Meng, why are you coming from inside? When did you get here?"
Not wanting to draw too much attention to herself, Wen Meng smiled and said, "Oh, I got here a while ago! You were probably so caught up in your conversation that you didn’t see me."
Everyone took her at her word and went back to chatting about school.
Only Wei Xin had a thoughtful expression. ’She knew she had been standing here the whole time. That meant there was only one possibility: that Mercedes just now was Wen Meng’s car.’
Wen Meng made small talk for a few minutes, then followed Wei Xin’s directions and found an empty seat at one of the tables with a built-in earthen stove.
Wen Meng had been a bit of a loner during their three years of high school. If it weren’t for her best friend wanting to come along, and the class president’s invitation, she would have skipped such a pointless reunion long ago.
Her only other friends, fellow arts and sports students, hadn’t arrived yet, so all she could do was listen to the idle chatter around her and play on her phone.
She listened as her former classmates talked about their universities and their boyfriends or girlfriends. Everyone would gossip and crowd around, eager to see pictures of their partners.
Some loudly bragged about how much money they had made this month, but as they spoke, their eyes were fixed on Wen Meng’s back.
"Guess who?"
Wen Meng, who was engrossed in her phone, suddenly found her vision plunged into darkness as someone covered her eyes from behind.
"Li Jia! Are you ever not childish? You do this every time," Wen Meng said, shaking off Li Jia’s hands with a hint of irritation in her voice.
Li Jia could tell Wen Meng was a little angry, but probably not at her. She plopped down in the empty space next to Wen Meng on the bench. "Well, well! Who’s gotten our great beauty Meng Meng all worked up?"
Before Wen Meng could answer, Li Jia wrapped an arm around her shoulder and whispered in her ear, "Let me guess! It’s about a man!"
"Did your boyfriend make you angry?" As her best friend, Li Jia naturally knew that Wen Meng had a boyfriend, and she also knew that Wu Yun was younger than her.
Wen Meng first nodded, then shook her head. "Sort of. It’s more like I’m sulking about him by myself."
Li Jia’s interest was instantly piqued. Just a couple of days ago, she had specifically talked to Wen Meng about the video from the welcome party.
But no matter how much Li Jia pressed, Wen Meng either clammed up or changed the subject.
Li Jia gave up. Seeing that more people were joining their table, she changed the subject herself.
"Meng Meng, you know what? I went to Hengdian and got photos with a ton of senior actors. Here, let me show you."
Li Jia was an acting major at Sichuan Communication University. She had just spent three months working as an extra in Hengdian. Her luck had turned right before school started when she was cast by a Qing dynasty court drama for a small role—one that survived for seven or eight episodes before getting killed off.
Wen Meng was still in a bad mood, but she listened patiently as Li Jia recounted her experiences.
When most of the people had arrived, the servers began to prepare the chicken in the earthen stove at the center of the table. They also started sticking flatbread dough to the sides of the pot to cook.
Smelling the smoky aroma of the food and listening to Li Jia’s vivid stories, Wen Meng’s mood gradually improved, and a smile returned to her face.
Most importantly, she received another message from Wu Yun: "Thank you for today! You really helped me out of a bind. I’ll take you out to have some fun sometime soon!"
Seeing the unconscious smile spread across Wen Meng’s face as she looked at her phone, Li Jia laughed and said, "Meng Meng, let me see a picture of your boyfriend! Every time you post, it’s just his hand or his back. I’ve never seen his face!"
Li Jia took Wen Meng’s phone. It was a selfie. Wen Meng was in her performance costume from the welcome party, while Wu Yun was in casual clothes. Their heads were touching intimately.
"Huh? Isn’t this the guy who sang after your performance? I know him! The video of him singing and playing guitar is super popular at our school. Even the music department professors have used it in class for analysis!"
"I had no idea! Meng Meng, you really kept this under wraps!"
Wen Meng pouted. Just as she was about to speak, a loud voice came from behind them.
"Everyone! Quiet down, please!"
Wei Xin was standing in the middle of the tables, holding a megaphone she had borrowed from somewhere.
"Our class had sixty people, and forty of us made it today."
Looking at the two tables of guys and three tables of girls, Wei Xin sighed. "I know that once everyone starts working, it’ll be even harder to get this many people together, let alone after we’re married with kids."
"I brought everyone together today for a few reasons. First, to reconnect and maybe create some opportunities for the single people here!"
Many of the people present laughed, and some of the single ones were already starting to sneak glances at their targets.
A few of the guys’ gazes landed on Wen Meng and Li Jia, some of them looking like they were itching to make a move.
