Chapter 145: Chapter 145: Preparing Gifts for Wen Meng’s Parents
On Saturdays, Rongcheng earns its other nickname: "Gridlock City!"
Especially downtown, where driving is slower than walking.
Wu Yun drove to Crystal Fusion and circled several times without finding a single parking spot.
Finally, thanks to a tip from Liu Yongheng, they spotted a car about to leave a street-side parking space up ahead.
Wu Yun immediately put his Master Level driving skills on display. He whipped the G63 into a U-turn right up against the guardrail. Amid the gasps of the other three passengers, he parked steadily in the newly opened spot. The driver of the sedan ahead, who had been preparing to reverse into it, slapped his horn in frustration before reluctantly driving away.
"Boss, you’re the man!" Liu Yongheng exclaimed, slapping his thigh in excitement.
"Fighting! Singing! Street dancing! And now drifting! Boss, is there anything you can’t do!?" Liu Yongheng was in complete awe of Wu Yun.
Wu Yun replied with a deadpan expression, "Yes. Giving birth."
That made Li Shiming burst out laughing, and even Pang Guang couldn’t help but chuckle.
"Let’s go, let’s go! First, help me pick out some gifts for my future mother-in-law and father-in-law!" Wu Yun said, locking the car and waving to the three of them.
"Boss! You’re meeting the parents?" Li Shiming asked, a little shocked.
Wu Yun wagged his index finger. "Not quite! I’ve already met them!"
Wu Yun’s words made all three of their jaws drop to the floor.
"Boss, what are you planning to buy? I need to take notes!"
"Watches!"
...
Wu Yun confidently led them to the Breguet boutique, a single-story, vintage-style building.
"Welcome to Breguet. Do you gentlemen have an appointment?" a sharply-dressed sales associate asked, approaching as Wu Yun and the three other young men pushed open the door.
As a luxury watch associate, her first instinct was to look at a customer’s wrist, then at their clothes.
Seeing the Patek Philippe on Wu Yun’s wrist—and a high-end model at that—and then glancing at the three men following him, she immediately knew who the primary customer was.
The sales associate thought Wu Yun looked very familiar. ’A handsome guy like him... he must have been in the store before, but I’ll bet he wasn’t one of our customers!’
But that didn’t matter. This was a potential VIP customer.
"No appointment. I need you to help me pick out two ladies’ watches. One for an elegant woman in her forties, and one for a girl in her twenties."
Pang Guang surveyed the boutique’s interior a bit awkwardly, and Li Shiming seemed a little tense as well.
Only Liu Yongheng appeared perfectly at ease, strolling around with his hands behind his back to look at the watches in the display cases.
"Sir, what price range do you have in mind?" the sales associate asked softly.
"Around two to four hundred thousand. Each."
"Of course! Please, follow me and have a seat over here."
...
The sales associate returned with eight watches at various price points, covering three different collections.
After some deliberation, Wu Yun selected a Breguet Marine 8818BB/59/864/DD0D and a Breguet Marine 8828BR/5D/586/DD00.
The former was priced at 289,100, the latter at 300,200.
As they left the store with the gift bags, Li Shiming finally snapped out of his daze. "That’s it?"
Wu Yun smiled and retorted, "What else?"
"No, I mean... shouldn’t you have thought it over, shopped around a bit? That was almost 600,000 worth of watches! Not sixty!" Li Shiming still couldn’t quite accept Wu Yun’s shopping style.
Wu Yun just smiled and said nothing. Instead, Liu Yongheng, standing beside him, laughed and said, "What’s so crazy about that? I’ve seen people buy houses worth tens of millions the same day they view them! It’s like if you had five hundred yuan, would you stress over buying something that costs two or three?"
After speaking, Liu Yongheng clapped Li Shiming and Pang Guang on the shoulders. "Study hard and strive to be first-generation rich! I believe in you guys!"
For Li Shiming and Pang Guang, this broadening of their horizons had its pros and cons. The upside was that it might ignite their ambition and make them work harder.
The downside was that it could make them develop unrealistic ambitions, or even warp their values.
So, in the future, Wu Yun would just have to give Liu Yongheng a heads-up, so the two of them could help out their roommates more, especially Pang Guang.
Of course, it’s better to teach a man to fish than to give him a fish.
"Come on! Next stop! Still need a gift for my father-in-law."
When men go shopping, they usually have a clear objective. Once they arrive, they typically head straight for their destination.
Wu Yun led the trio through the crowded crosswalk and headed straight for the Jaeger-LeCoultre boutique on the third floor of the IFS across the street.
"Welcome, Mr. Wu! Please, follow me. I’ve already prepared several watches in your target price range."
While at Breguet, Wu Yun had remembered adding a salesperson from there to his contacts before, but since he hadn’t saved a name, he had no idea who it was. So after leaving, he’d simply messaged his contact at Jaeger-LeCoultre, asking her to prepare a few watches in the 300,000 range. That explained the warm welcome he received the moment he walked through the door.
After briefly hesitating between a Jaeger-LeCoultre Master 1302520 and a Jaeger-LeCoultre Duomètre 6062520, Wu Yun ultimately chose the relatively simpler Master 1302520.
That set Wu Yun back another 295,000.
From entering the store to paying, the whole process took less than ten minutes.
Liu Yongheng complained from the side, "Boss, can you not be so fast? I did one lap, sat down, and it was already over! I didn’t even get a sip of water!"
Wu Yun slapped him on the back of the head. "Watch your adjectives! Tonight, I’ll show you what it really means to dawdle! And what it really means to be slow!"
Meanwhile, Li Shiming and Pang Guang followed behind in a numb silence, lost in their own thoughts.
By the time they left the IFS, it was already five-thirty in the afternoon.
So, Wu Yun and the others headed back to the street where they had parked.
Seeing Wu Yun put all the watch gift bags in the trunk and close it, Li Shiming asked nervously, "Boss, aren’t you worried someone will break into the car?"
That was nearly a million yuan worth of merchandise. If it had been his, he would have wanted to hang it all on his body; only then would he feel at ease.
Liu Yongheng smacked Li Shiming on the butt. "I told you you’re naive, and you wouldn’t believe me. Look at the camera above your head! And look up ahead, what’s that? Officer Friendly!"
"If someone managed to steal it in a busy area like this, then congratulations to the thief! They’ve just won an all-inclusive stay, with room and board, for ten-plus years!"
Liu Yongheng paused, then added, "But I bet even if it did get stolen, the boss would probably just feel a momentary sting and get over it!"
Wu Yun turned his head and asked, "And why do you think that?"
"Boss, while you had your watch off to try on the others, I looked up your Patek Philippe! It’s over two million! A guy who can wear a G-Wagon on his wrist would probably only feel a momentary sting, right?"
After all, Liu Yongheng’s own father had only bought one watch worth over two million, and he treasured it immensely. He would never wear it unless it was for an important, formal occasion.
Wu Yun’s extravagance completely shattered the trio’s worldview. Liu Yongheng, who originally felt he could still somewhat compete with Wu Yun, now realized they weren’t even in the same league. Even his father might barely be on par.
