Chapter 14: Kayla’s Suspicion

Kayla glanced at him suspiciously.

"I called Mark, and he said there was no emergency at work..."

Amon’s footsteps froze at the doorway.

Only for a moment.

Acting as though nothing had happened, he continued walking normally.

However, that brief pause had already made Kayla far more suspicious than before.

"Are you seeing another woman?"

The question came suddenly.

Over the past few weeks, she had noticed the increasingly suspicious delays caused by his supposed "work."

Her doubts had grown with each passing day.

So after Amon left earlier, she had finally decided to verify his story for herself.

Just as she had suspected, it wasn’t true.

Which naturally led to another question.

Why was Amon lying to her?

And no matter how she thought about it, she could only arrive at a single conclusion.

She hesitated briefly before continuing.

Her voice remained calm, but there was a faint edge to it. A sadness she was trying her best to hide.

"Do you find me unattractive because I gave birth to your child?"

"Kaylie..."

Amon’s voice softened as he walked toward her.

Without saying anything else, he pulled her into his arms.

Warm.

She was warm.

Kayla buried her face against his chest.

The embrace comforted her slightly, yet at the same time, it deepened the faint sense of loss lingering in her heart.

"J-just tell me what’s wrong..." she whispered into his chest, her breath warm against his skin.

"I... I might be able to handle it."

Amon gently pulled back and raised her chin with one hand.

"Kaylie... I want you to understand something."

His gaze met hers.

"I’ll never cheat on you. I love you with all my heart."

Leaning forward, he gave her a light kiss on the lips.

What he said was the truth.

After arriving in this world, his life had been painfully dull for more than five years.

Then he met Kayla.

Everything changed.

There was something about her.

An allure.

A warmth.

A charm that naturally drew him closer.

The moment he met her, he knew.

She was the one.

Across both of his lifetimes, he had never felt this way about any other woman.

And Amon was not the type of man who would betray the woman he loved.

At the same time, he couldn’t help feeling a pang of guilt.

He hated lying to her.

But what exactly was he supposed to tell her?

The Demon Child Faction?

The fact that he was a transmigrator?

The dangers lurking behind the SSS-ranked dungeons?

None of those were things he could reveal.

Nor were they burdens he wanted her carrying.

She had only recently become a mother.

The mother of his child.

And Amon had no intention of placing such weight on her shoulders.

If the sky ever fell...

Then he would be the one holding it up.

For his family.

"Then what’s the problem?"

Kayla looked up at him.

Those watery blue eyes stared directly into his own.

Searching.

Waiting.

Amon remained silent for a moment.

Finally, he spoke.

"I’ll explain everything to you soon."

Those were the only words he could offer.

Kayla held his gaze.

He held hers.

Several long seconds passed between them.

Then she finally released a slow breath. frёewebnoѵēl.com

"You don’t have to handle everything alone."

She hugged him once more.

One hand reached up and gently ruffled his hair.

"I want you to understand something too."

Her voice softened.

"There’s a reason you have a family."

A warm feeling spread through Amon’s chest.

Such warmth...

What man didn’t crave something like this?

This was exactly why he had to protect it.

For as long as he possibly could.

Silently, Amon clenched his fist.

Outwardly, however, he smiled.

A genuine smile.

One filled with relief.

"I’m still making dinner. Go freshen up, then we can eat."

Kayla finally stepped away from him.

Amon nodded.

Just as he was about to head toward the room, he noticed Ciara staring at him.

Her large green eyes sparkled brightly.

"Hey there, little one..."

Amon cooed softly.

Ciara immediately stretched a hand toward him.

A curious look filled her eyes, as though she were questioning why he still hadn’t revealed his secret.

He wasn’t an ordinary man.

He was a powerful Awakener.

So why wasn’t he telling anyone?

’Why isn’t Dad saying anything?’

Ciara thought inwardly.

’Is this how all men are? Silently carrying such heavy burdens on their own?’

Unfortunately, she still couldn’t speak.

Otherwise, she would have voiced her concerns immediately.

Amon lightly pinched her cheek.

’Oww.’

Ciara pouted internally.

"Did you miss me?"

’Of course I did. You’re always trying to get yourself killed.’

Ciara grumbled once more.

At this rate, she would have to expose her father’s secret identity herself before he accidentally got himself killed one day.

Unable to speak, she simply continued staring at him with wide, unblinking eyes.

Amon chuckled.

Then he headed toward his room.

...

Meanwhile, turmoil was brewing across the outside world.

Cold Moon District was merely a small state within the vast Xing Country.

Ever since mana descended upon the world, the planet itself had expanded to more than ten times its original size.

As a result, even a relatively small state like Cold Moon District could rival entire countries from the old era.

Despite this, Cold Moon District remained insignificant in the eyes of most people.

Few paid attention to events occurring there.

However...

That was no longer the case.

Across Xing Country, recordings of the Butcher’s battle against Davie spread like wildfire.

Many of the higher-ups had heard whispers about the mysterious vigilante before.

But they never paid him much attention.

In their eyes, he was merely some fortunate Awakener causing trouble within a minor district.

Nothing worth concerning themselves with.

Cold Moon District was little more than an ant to them.

Now, however, things had changed.

The Butcher had killed Davie.

And that demanded attention.

Davie wasn’t an ordinary D-rank expert.

He was someone fortunate enough to obtain a Mythical-ranked skill after killing a dungeon boss.

Many influential figures were aware of this fact.

It was precisely why they had kept an eye on him.

After all, if a D-rank could already fight opponents at the C-rank...

What would happen once he reached A-rank?

His potential was obvious.

Although he belonged to the notorious Demon Child Faction, many powerful families still coveted what he possessed.

Specifically...

His Mythical-ranked skill.

And now, the Butcher had killed him.

...

Neverland.

One of the largest states within Xing Country.

At this moment, a meeting was underway inside a heavily secured conference room.

Several influential figures sat around a long table discussing important matters.

Then suddenly...

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

The sound echoed through the room.

A moment later, the door opened slightly.

"Levi..."

The urgency in the speaker’s voice immediately drew everyone’s attention.

"We just received an interesting piece of information..."
