Chapter 169: Chapter 169
Kyra’s POV
Last night, Nathan only looked at me with pain in his eyes before choosing to walk away. I didn’t follow him, instead crouching by the pool’s edge, letting my tears and pain overwhelm me. I had kept Snow away from him, hidden his daughter from him. If he never forgave me, I couldn’t blame him. I only hated how we always seemed destined to miss each other and cause each other pain.
"Kyra, don’t be too heartbroken," Sylvia whispered in my mind. "Don’t forget about the baby you’re carrying."
I stopped my sobbing. She was right,Nathan and I still had another child connecting us.
Standing in front of my desk at Foster’s company the next day, I tried desperately to find a sense of belonging in my mother’s family. No matter how hard I tried, there was nothing. I didn’t belong here. This family didn’t deserve me.
If Mom thought this family wasn’t worthy of being recognized by her daughter, maybe I shouldn’t try to fit in either.
"Kyra."
I turned slowly toward the door as Sara Foster entered.
I sat down in my chair and crossed my legs, regarding her coldly. "If not for my position, I wouldn’t come even if you called me a hundred times. What do you want?"
I tilted my head, gesturing for her to sit.
"I’m not here to chat, Kyra. Tell me what you want, and please, stop investigating my brother."
I let out a humorless laugh. "That’s not what I want from you. I already have someone else handling that."
Her forehead creased. "What?"
"Sit down, Sara. Let’s talk about transferring my position to you."
Her eyes widened slightly, shock and doubt written across her face.
"What do you mean?"
"Connor Foster doesn’t deserve this company. You should take it."
She shook her head, clearly suspicious. "Mom gave this company to you, Kyra. Are you mocking me?"
"I’m tired of fighting this war."
She gritted her teeth. "So you’re giving up on getting justice for your mother?"
"No. I just need to let go of this company." fɾeewebnoveℓ.co๓
"Because of what? Because of Connor? If you think he’s responsible for your mother’s death, that’s all the more reason you need to defeat him!"
"I only have one condition before giving this company to you, Sara," I said, ignoring her outburst.
Her expression turned grim. "Just what I expected."
"Your mate is involved, Sara."
The shock on her face was even more pronounced now. Her eyes widened in horror. "W-what?"
"I don’t care what you do with him, but don’t ever give him any position in the company. That’s all I ask."
"No! That’s not true!"
The desperation in her eyes was overwhelming. She was clearly blinded by love for her mate and couldn’t accept the truth. The report Attorney Lee gave me included evidence of Connor and Wes’s involvement in my mother’s death. Witness statements were detailed in the document, which made me wonder why Attorney Lee hadn’t pursued the investigation further when he clearly could have.
That’s why I lied to Attorney Lee about the documents. Something felt off - like he was hiding something.
"If you’re doing this to manipulate me—"
"I don’t need riches, Sara. Not when they only make me lonely."
Her lips parted as she struggled between believing me or not. Sara wasn’t evil. I could see that clearly. She had been deprived of her rightful place and only wanted what she deserved. I understood because I wanted the same for myself.
"I’m stepping down, Sara. I will give my position to you. Legally."
She shook her head again. "If having the company means losing the only person who made me feel wanted, then I don’t want it, Kyra."
She stood up and turned her back. I stood too, watching her.
"You can’t stay with a two-faced man, Sara. He doesn’t deserve you," I said before she could leave.
She paused momentarily before walking out. I swallowed hard and took a deep breath before sitting back down. I couldn’t convince Sara easily, but I knew I would eventually. I needed to remove people like her from my revenge plans. She was a rose among thorns.
The door swung open again. I thought Sara had returned, but it was Matt who entered, his forehead creased with worry. freeweɓnovel.cøm
"What did Aunt Sara come here for?"
I shrugged as I returned to my swivel chair. "She had business with me. I should ask you the same thing, Matt Foster. Why are you here?"
He clenched his jaw and sat down across from me. His eyes held something back - a discovery hidden behind their coldness.
"Why do you think my dad was involved in your mother’s death?"
I lifted my chin. "He’s the only one who can answer that question, Matt."
He pressed his lips together. "What if you don’t find any evidence?"
"I’ll dig deeper and deeper until I find something."
He took a deep breath and looked away. Anger flickered in his eyes. "I heard dad talking to someone on the phone. He mentioned burning documents. I don’t know who he was talking to."
Burning documents? Two people crossed my mind: Luke’s sister and Attorney Lee. Lee hadn’t called me since I told him the documents had burned with my unit. If it was Attorney Lee, then my distrust was justified. And if it was Luke’s sister, I couldn’t understand why she would team up with her brother’s possible killer.
"Why are you telling me this?" I asked Matt seriously.
He sighed and looked down. "I love my parents, but if they’re involved in your mother’s death, they should pay for it."
"Thank you for understanding, Matt. But I still can’t trust you."
"I know. But can you tell me where Emily is?"
My forehead creased. Had he become obsessed with her?
"Why?"
"I need to talk to her. She’s been avoiding me."
The corner of my lips turned up as I studied him. Emily must be the reason for his behavior. He must really like her.
