Chapter 148: Chapter 148

Kyra’s POV

"Mommy!" Snow ran to me as soon as she saw me. Tears streamed down her face as she hugged me.

I picked up Snow, feeling her shaking against me. I looked at Phoebe, then back at Snow.

"What’s wrong?" I asked softly.

"She saw Luke in the news," Phoebe explained. "I didn’t know that she was watching television. I was cooking her pancakes when I heard her crying."

I sighed and held my daughter closer, feeling Sylvia stir protectively within me. "Shh, hush now, sweetie."

"Mommy, what h-happened to Uncle L-Luke?" Snow’s voice quivered as she spoke, her little fingers clutching my shirt.

I bit my bottom lip and shook my head. "U-Uncle Luke is... gone, sweetheart." The words felt like stones in my throat.

She cried harder, her tears soaking through my shirt. "Why?"

I caressed her cheeks as I sat on the couch and settled her on my lap. "Shhh, Uncle Luke became an angel, sweetie." I tried to explain in a way her young mind could understand.

She paused and looked at me with those innocent eyes. "J-Just like Grandma and Grandpa?"

I nodded and forced a smile. "Yes, sweetheart."

"I won’t see him again just like Grandma and Grandpa?" Her lower lip trembled.

I touched her chest where her heart was, feeling my own break a little more. "They will stay here. They will guide you until you grow up like a fine lady."

Her lips trembled more intensely. "C-Can they promise?"

I hugged her close, looking at Phoebe with teary eyes. Phoebe’s expression matched my own sadness.

"You should eat now," Phoebe suggested, then bent forward to talk to Snow. "Luv, do you wanna visit my house again?"

Phoebe’s idea was perfect. The best way to distract Snow and shield her from everything happening was to remove her from this chaotic environment.

I looked at Snow’s tear-stained face. "Sweetheart, do you wanna stay with Aunt Phoebe for a few days?"

She blinked and stared at me, processing the question. "In the house with a big pool, Mommy?"

"Yes."

Finally, she smiled, a small ray of sunshine breaking through storm clouds. "Does that mean we will visit Daddy Nathan again?"

Her innocent question sent a pang through my heart. She wanted to be with her father. She didn’t know about our complicated relationship.

I tucked her hair behind her ears, trying to hide the emotion in my eyes. "Do you wanna stay with Daddy Nathan?"

"Yes!" she said excitedly.

I nodded, making the decision I knew was best for her. "You can go with Aunt Phoebe for now. Mommy just needs to do something."

Her innocent doe eyes stared up at me. "You’ll sleep at Daddy Nathan’s house too, Mommy?"

"No, sweetheart. But I will visit you and pick you up after a few days. Is that a deal?" I offered, trying to sound cheerful.

She caressed her chin in an adorable thinking gesture before nodding with a bright smile. "It’s a deal, Mommy!"

"Let’s go to the bedroom and change your clothes. We’re going today." Phoebe offered her hand to Snow.

Snow excitedly took Phoebe’s hand. Just then, Emily entered and went straight to the dining table. She sat down and looked at me expectantly. frёewebnoѵēl.com

"Finally, I can eat now. How ’bout you?" she asked, already pouring coffee into her mug.

I sat across from her, but as soon as the scent of her coffee reached my nose, my stomach churned violently. A wave of nausea hit me so suddenly that I barely had time to react.

I covered my mouth and rushed to the sink, but nothing came out. As I stood there, washing my mouth with trembling hands, a realization dawned on me that made my heart race.

"Kyra, are you..." Emily’s voice trailed off as she approached me.

My hands gripped the edge of the sink as I stared at the running water. Emily reached over and turned the faucet off. I slowly looked up at her, fear and uncertainty written all over my face.

Her eyes drifted to my stomach and then back to my face before she gasped and covered her mouth.

I swallowed hard. The possibility that I might be pregnant with Nathan’s child again filled me with conflicting emotions.

Everything was still in chaos. I still didn’t have enough evidence to bring my mother’s killer to justice. Was this the right time to bring another child into my complicated life?

"Kyra, you have to get tested," Emily said firmly.

I looked at her, feeling lost. "What should I do, Emily?"

"You have to talk to Nathan and tell him about the baby... also about Snow." Her tone left no room for argument.

"I-It’s still complicated between us..." I whispered, feeling Sylvia stir anxiously within me.

"It’s not about you and him, Kyra. It’s about your child. He deserves to know the truth."

Silence fell between us. I wasn’t completely certain I was pregnant, but my wolf instincts were rarely wrong about such things. I was carrying Nathan’s child again, and the thought made my heart race with both joy and fear.
