Chapter 147: Chapter 147

Kyra’s POV

"Kyra—"

"Let’s talk some other time, Nathan. I still need to talk to Luke’s siblings." I cut him off as I ran into him while walking toward the morgue. freewebnøvel.com

Emily had called to inform me that Luke’s siblings had been notified about what happened. I was on my way to meet them, my heart heavy with the burden of facing a family torn apart because of secrets tied to me.

"Kyra, I can’t let another day pass without you hearing my explanations—"

I turned to face him, and he stopped walking. His familiar minty scent intensified. I could feel Sylvia stirring restlessly within me, wanting to be close to Alaric, yet holding back just as I was.

"I need time, Nathan. I already have so many problems."

He stared at my face with pain visible in his eyes, the Alpha’s usual confidence crumbling before me.

"Kyra, I lost you once and I don’t want to lose you again. I’m scared that if I let this pass without giving you my explanation, I’d lose my chance again. Kyra, I... I love you so much and I’m willing to wait even if it takes a decade, but I can’t wait in peace knowing that you misunderstood what happened..."

I swallowed hard. "T-Then go! Explain it to me. Now!"

His brown eyes softened. "She went to my unit last night and purposely spilled her coffee on her dress... She asked to borrow my shirt and I let her, but I didn’t expect that she would try to seduce me. She heard that I was talking to you, so she said that on purpose."

I laughed sarcastically. "You knew she wet her clothes on purpose and you still helped her."

"I can’t ignore her. I did her wrong—"

"Stop taking responsibility for the things that you cannot control, Nathan!" I interrupted, feeling Sylvia growl within me. "You loved her and you hurt her, but it was beyond your control. You didn’t know that you’d hurt her and you can’t take that responsibility forever..."

I paused, trying to find the right words to make him understand.

I had fallen in love with him because of his gentleness and compassion, qualities that set him apart from other Alphas. Unlike my step-brother Kieran, who embodied the typical Alpha stereotype with his domineering and controlling nature, Nathan had always been different. He was kind and considerate.

But now, that very kindness was becoming our undoing.

"...You already apologized, sincerely. That’s enough! You don’t have to constantly help her or be kind to her just because she was once part of your life and you hurt her accidentally..."

"I-I..." he started, but words seemed to fail him.

"How about me?" I lifted my chin and looked at him. "Are you only chasing me because you feel like it’s your responsibility to make me feel better because you hurt me before?"

"No!" he shook his head persistently. "I love you, Kyra. So much!"

"Then, put me at the top of your priorities," I said, tears welling up in my eyes.

"I don’t need a kind man who will help anyone or everyone who’s in need. I need a man who will prioritize me over other people—people who aren’t even your family."

"Kyra..."

"I don’t want you to be kind to everyone, Nathan! I don’t want you to feel responsible for the things you have no control over. I want you to ignore the people who are only getting in our way."

"I want you to be my best friend again! I want you to be my husband again!"

The pain was making me uncontrollable. My emotions exploded like a dam breaking under too much pressure.

I had always loved his gentle nature, but right now, I needed Nathan to find balance—to remain the caring man I loved while standing firm against those who threatened what we had.

"I-I’m sorry..." he whispered. "I-I was just scared and...insecure."

I shook my head and wiped the tears that rolled down my cheeks. "You can be scared. You can be insecure. But please... stop caring about other people. Stop caring about Sophia. Stop seeing her. Stop talking to her. Stop... just stop making me so fucking jealous!"

His brown eyes remained fixed on me as he took a step closer and gently caressed my cheek with his thumb. He lowered his face until I felt his lips pressed softly against my forehead.

His warm arms slowly wrapped around my body as he pulled me closer, embracing me.

"I love you," he whispered in my ear. "I love you so much and I’m sorry for disappointing you again. You don’t have to tell me about these things twice. I will work on myself and be better. I will make sure that when you come back to me... the guilt in my heart is all gone."

I squeezed my eyes shut and buried my face in his chest, inhaling his comforting scent. That’s all I needed to hear.

I wiped my tears and gazed into his eyes. "Tell me when you have already cleared your heart of guilt. I’m just waiting for you to come back to being the man I once knew. I’m just waiting for you to be the Nathan I married before. Be mine again. Completely mine, because I have always been yours, Nathan. I have always been yours..."

"I’m yours too, Kyra. And I will never hurt you again."

Suddenly, someone pulled me away from Nathan.

A hand slapped my cheek.

When I turned and saw it was just a girl, I froze.

"Hey!" Nathan’s voice turned into an Alpha timbre as he stepped toward me.

The girl burst into tears but didn’t back down. She didn’t dare strike again with Nathan standing there, but she still glared at him with defiance. Her grief was stronger than her submission.

"My brother was kind! He only wanted to support us and provide for us. Why did you have to involve him in your messy life? Why?" She directed her fury at me. freёwebnoѵel.com

I looked down and bit my bottom lip. "I-I’m sorry..."

"Sorry?" She sobbed. "You’re sorry? I don’t need your sorry! Bring my brother back! Bring him back!"

"Lucy, stop it!" A young man ran over and grabbed her arm.

"No! She needs to pay for what she did! She was the one who killed Luke! She killed our brother!" Lucy’s eyes were wild with pain.

"Lucy, it wasn’t Kyra’s fault," Nathan said gently. His Alpha presence filled the hallway. Lucy couldn’t challenge him, but her grief gave her courage.

"Stop defending that woman!" she screamed at Nathan, fists clenched at her sides as she trembled with rage. "She’s ruining everyone’s life—"

"Lucy, I said stop it! Luke wouldn’t want this!" her brother said firmly.

Lucy stared at me with pure hatred. Then she shoved her brother away and ran off, crying.

I closed my eyes tight. I understood her pain. Luke’s death wasn’t my fault, but it still hurt. I wouldn’t stop until I found his killer.

"Miss Kyra..." Luke’s younger brother, Jaxon, called to me. I looked at him through my tears. "I’m sorry..."

He shook his head. "It’s not your fault. But Luke left something for you. He told me if anything happened, I should give it to you."

My heart stopped. "What is it?"

"I hid it at home. I want to give it to you, but with the funeral and Lucy..." He glanced at Nathan. "I’ll bring it when I can."

I nodded. "I understand."

Luke left something. He knew what might happen. He had discovered something that led him to a cruel and painful death.
