Chapter 144: Chapter 144

Kyra’s POV

I watched Phoebe sitting motionless on the couch, her eyes fixed on the television though her mind seemed miles away. If Emily’s suspicions were correct, if Phoebe had fallen for Caleb, I honestly didn’t know how to comfort her.

All I could possibly tell her was to forget her feelings, but what right did I have to give such advice? I couldn’t even forget my own feelings for Nathan. After all these years... it was still him who occupied my heart, even when it hurt.

Sylvia stirred restlessly within me. "She’s hurting, just like we’ve been hurting."

I settled beside Phoebe.

She looked up at me with sad eyes and turned off the television.

"Did you call your parents?" I asked gently.

She shook her head. "I don’t want them to think I have a problem." freewebnøvel.coɱ

I sighed, recognizing the stubborn Anderson trait. "Phoebe, they’re your family. You can talk to them."

"They won’t understand," she whispered.

"Nathan will," I said instinctively. Despite everything, I still trusted Nathan so much. He had always been gentle and caring.

She gave me a sad smile. "He understood some of it, but I can’t tell him everything. I’m... afraid of what will happen."

Fear. It’s always what stops us from doing what we need to do. I couldn’t blame her. Fear is a formidable enemy, impossible to overcome unless we’re brave enough to face the consequences.

"What will you do?" I asked.

She looked down, fidgeting with her fingers and biting her bottom lip.

"I..." She paused and took a deep breath. "I’m thinking about moving abroad. A-after this school year... I want to transfer schools."

I nodded and held her hand. "What’s important is that you know what to prioritize."

She met my gaze, fear still clouding her blue eyes. "K-Kyra, I... I gave m-myself to him."

My heart raced, shocked by her admission. I couldn’t look away from her face, couldn’t find words. I thought of Snow—unplanned but the greatest blessing of my life. But Phoebe’s situation was different. She was so young, with so much ahead of her.

I swallowed hard. "Tell me he used protection and you visited a doctor for a contraceptive injection."

She looked down and began to sob.

My eyes widened, my chest tightening with anxiety.

"I-I was so impulsive," she cried. "I don’t know what got into me. I just... I just woke up next to him and... oh my Goddess!" She turned to me, tears streaming down her face. "W-what if I get pregnant?"

I pulled her closer and stroked her hair as she cried against my chest.

"I d-don’t know what t-to do, Kyra," she sobbed. "Dad and Mom will be devastated. Nathan will be disappointed. I don’t... I don’t want to hurt them..."

I hugged her tighter. "Shh. Have you taken a pregnancy test already?"

She shook her head against my shoulder. "I-it hasn’t been two weeks s-since it happened. I’m... scared."

I cupped her cheeks, making her look at me, and wiped away her tears. "Let’s wait another week before we get a test, okay? Also, keep track of your cycle. Let me know if anything’s different or if you’re late, okay?"

She sniffed and nodded. After she wiped her tears and tried to compose herself, I went to the kitchen counter and brought her a glass of water. She drank it all and placed the empty glass on the coffee table before burying her face against my neck again.

I stroked her hair gently. "Go sleep beside Snow. I’ll call your brother to let him know you’re staying here tonight."

"What about you? Where will you sleep?" she asked.

I smiled. "I’ll sleep with Emily. Don’t worry about me. Go rest with Snow."

She nodded and slowly stood up. She carried her glass to the sink and washed it before heading to the bedroom.

I sighed heavily and took out my phone, dialing Nathan’s number.

"Hello, Kyra?" His deep voice answered after just two rings.

I pressed my lips together. "Uh, Nathan... Phoebe’s with me. She, uh... wants to stay with Snow, so... I called to tell you she’s staying for tonight."

"Is she okay?" he asked with worry.

He knew something was wrong—Phoebe must have told him part of the story, but not everything.

I ran my tongue over my bottom lip. "She’s okay, Nathan. She’s just... stressed out."

"Please talk to her, Kyra. I’m worried. She has a problem and she won’t tell me anything."

"I’ll talk to her, Nathan. Don’t worry too much."

I heard him let out a sigh of relief. "Thank you, Kyra. I don’t know what I’d do if you weren’t here. She just... won’t tell me anything."

I pulled myself up and leaned back against the kitchen counter. "Nathan..."

"Hmm?" he whispered.

"Do you... have any idea about Phoebe’s problem?"

There was a deafening silence between us. I wasn’t planning to betray her confidence, I just wanted to know if he was aware of anything.

"The only thing she told me was she... gave herself to the man she loves," he finally said, his voice strained. "S-she tried to hide it from me, but I caught her. Please make her talk, Kyra. I-I don’t know if she’s telling the truth when she said she wasn’t forced... I’m... so worried."

I sighed. "She wasn’t forced, Nathan. At least, she admitted that much to me. She wanted what happened, but she didn’t tell me about the... guy."

But I was almost certain it was Caleb. Emily’s words echoed in my mind, and now I believed she was right. It was Caleb Walter, which made everything infinitely more complicated. I knew her parents would never approve if Caleb took responsibility. Phoebe was just 21, and Caleb was 36. Plus, Phoebe was still in college.

I silently prayed she wouldn’t get pregnant at such a young age.

"I want to know who the guy is, but... I don’t want to interfere in her personal life," Nathan continued. "But Kyra, I-I don’t know. She’s too young to be in this kind of relationship. She’s still in college."

"It’s natural for you to worry, Nathan," I said softly. "But you can’t stop her from falling in love. It’s like a natural disaster. A beautiful disaster."

I heard him sigh. "Yeah... I guess so..."

I smiled despite myself. "She’ll stay the night, and I promise she’s safe."

"I have no doubt when she’s with you, Kyra—" His voice was suddenly interrupted by another familiar voice in the background.

"Nathan, my panties are wet!"

My lips parted in shock, my heart racing and aching. I knew that voice all too well. They were together?

"Just fucking go and don’t disturb me again!" I heard him snap, then he cleared his throat. "Uh, Kyra, I’m sorry about that—"

"You seem busy," I cut him off. "I’m sorry for interrupting."

"W-what? No! It’s nothing—Fuck! Stop it, Sophia—"

I ended the call, my face expressionless but Sylvia howling with rage inside me. They were together. I glanced at my phone screen. It was already 9:45 PM.

I swallowed hard as I watched Nathan’s name flash on my screen with an incoming call. I stared at it until it stopped ringing. He didn’t give up, though. He called again, which I ignored. He sent a message, but I didn’t read it, just switched my phone to silent mode.

What are you doing, Nathan? Are you doing this again? I caught you with her once and let it slide. But now? Really? "Panties"? "Wet"?

"We should really burn them all to death," Sylvia roared.
