Kyra’s POV

Emily, who was standing behind Snow, laughed with amusement as she looked between Nathan and me. "Is this a comeback?"

I frowned at Emily. She smirked and fixed her eyes on Nathan. "You’re rejected by your fated mate?"

I gasped softly. Of course, Nathan must have spent these five years with Sophia. They’d probably become the proper Alpha and Luna of Nightfall Pack by now.

Nathan scoffed and actually growled at her. "I was never married... to anyone, Emily."

I bit my bottom lip, surprised by the relief that flooded through me. Stupid, Kyra!

Nathan glanced at me worriedly, but I quickly looked away, afraid he’d noticed my reaction. I’d just indirectly rejected his declaration of love, yet here I was, acting like a lovesick teenager.

Emily laughed again, drawing my attention as Mary stepped out of the kitchen. Her eyes widened with shock as she recognized Nathan, which wasn’t surprising considering his status as CEO of a prestigious company.

Nathan ignored Emily and walked slowly toward Snow. My daughter stared at his face intently, as if memorizing his features. I swallowed hard as I watched them, my heart thundering so loudly I feared I might pass out.

"Hi," Nathan greeted Snow nervously, kneeling before her while she continued studying his face.

I held my breath watching them. Snow looked exactly like me, so I doubted Nathan would immediately recognize her as his daughter. Still, I trusted instinct more than facts that could be manipulated. frёewebηovel.cѳm

"I’m Nathan. Your name is... Snow, am I right?"

Snow’s eyes widened. "You know me? Are you my mommy’s friend?"

Nathan chuckled and nodded. "Yes."

"Nice to meet you, Nathan!" Snow hugged him happily.

I looked away as something twisted in my heart. Tears threatened at the corners of my eyes. Snow always welcomed my friends with gentle hugs like this, but watching her embrace her own father without knowing it felt unbearably poignant.

Nathan chuckled and caressed Snow’s cheek. "I was with your mommy when she gave birth to you. You were... so small that day. I-I never thought I’d see you again..."

Snow smiled even more sweetly. "Are you the prince in Martha’s story?"

"Huh?" Nathan glanced at me in confusion.

I froze, not knowing what to do or say.

"I asked Uncle Luke but he said he wasn’t the prince. Does that mean it’s you?"

Nathan licked his bottom lip before smiling at her. "What did the prince do?"

"He married the princess and they had a baby."

I sucked in a breath. Should I blame fairy tales for my daughter’s smart deduction?

"I’m not the prince, sweetheart. I’m the knight, I guess..." Nathan answered happily.

"There’s a knight? Martha didn’t tell me about him."

"Maybe the story isn’t over yet."

"Really?"

"What about..." Emily clapped her hands and smiled, "...we leave now because it’s getting late?"

I nodded gratefully. "Right! We should leave now."

"Leave?" Nathan stood straight and looked at me. "Where are you going?"

"Uhm... We’re moving out."

Nathan’s lips parted as he nodded and glanced at Snow before looking into my eyes again. "I can... offer a ride. If that’s okay?"

"To tell you honestly, loverboy," Emily interrupted, dangling her car keys, "I got a car. I’m rich and I’m going to take them to their new home. So you... better go home too, drink your anxiety medicine, sleep, and have a nice trip to Wonderland."

"Nathan can go to Wonderland?" Snow asked innocently.

I smiled and picked her up before looking at Nathan again. "Emily will help us, Nathan. I think you should go home. Your family must be worried by now."

He stared at Snow for a long moment before nodding. "Okay... Bye, sweetheart. I’ll visit you again sometime."

Snow giggled. "Bye, Nathan!"

After Nathan left, Emily looked at me and tilted her head knowingly. I looked away. "Don’t look at me like that."

"Your wall is so... very... vulnerable."

I sighed. "Emily, I couldn’t just shoo him away."

She smirked. "Come on, love. Let’s go to the car."

She took Snow from me. "We’ll wait in the car. The movers I hired will be here soon for your belongings."

I just nodded and watched her leave with Snow. When I turned to Mary, her expression was shocked.

"Mary..."

"You know Mr. Anderson?"

I bit my bottom lip and nodded. "Yes."

Her eyes widened as she covered her mouth. "Don’t tell me he’s..."

I covered her mouth and frowned. "Don’t even talk about it, Mary."

She gasped when I removed my hand. "Oh my God! What about Mr. Walter?"

"What?"

She grabbed my shoulders and looked into my eyes. "Whoever you choose, I’ll take the one you didn’t."

"Mary!" I chuckled and pinched her side.

She giggled and cupped her cheeks. "Gosh! I know you’re gorgeous, but I had no idea! Those guys are clearly into you. How lucky!"

I just shook my head. "Why don’t you just help me pack, Mary?"

"Sure! That is, if you agree to set me up with your handsome babysitter. What do you think?"

I smirked at her. "You’re really interested in him, huh?"

"More than Mr. Walter is interested in you."

"Shut up!"

We were laughing when someone knocked on the door. When I opened it, I came face to face with Nathan for the second time tonight, and just like before, my heart skipped a beat.

"Uh... Did you leave something?"

He smiled and shook his head. "I forgot my car keys."

I glanced at the coffee table where his keys lay. Mary was grinning at me as I walked past her to retrieve them.

"Here." I handed them over, and our fingers touched. That simple contact sent electrifying sensations through me, awakening desires I’d tried to bury.

"Thanks!" He smiled again and turned to leave but immediately faced me once more. "You sure you don’t need help?"

I found myself suppressing a smile as I slowly shook my head and politely declined his offer.

You can still affect me to the point where I’m fighting a smile, I thought, but I’m not ready to trust you again. Maybe someday... if you manage to earn that trust back.
