Chapter 520: Chapter 520
Kasandra sat in a shuttle waiting for the airlock to be connected with the enemy ship.
She felt conflicted about doing this, but Avery had told her to do whatever it took to stop this attack.
He had been too busy using his psionic abilities for her to tell him anything. But she was fine with that. All that mattered were the results. She would just have to ask for his forgiveness in the future once she had the chance.
It was not long before the shuttle’s sealed doors opened and a half dozen people wearing combat armor and wielding laser rifles ran in to secure the cockpit.
When they arrived, they found the sole occupant sitting in the pilot’s chair.
Except as they got closer to secure the target, it was clear that something was not right.
The individual was not moving at all.
Hastily Douvoi’s subordinates rushed over to the front of the cockpit to determine what was going on.
Once they were in front of the chair, their eyes went wide as they recognized who the person in the shuttle was.
It was not Kasandra as they had been told to expect, but a comrade that they all knew.
Vels, one of the spies that had infiltrated Avery’s crew was tied up and unconscious. With a brown wig that had pointy ears shooting out of the top of it affixed to his head for good measure.
"Oops, looks like I’ve been found out. I hope that you all enjoy the present I sent you."
Kasandra’s voice suddenly resounded through the shuttle’s cockpit.
The people inside felt a horrid sense of foreboding and frantically moved to exit the craft.
Unfortunately for them, it was already too late.
With the press of a single button, Kasandra set off a chain reaction in the main engine and caused the entire shuttle to explode.
The ship that it was connected to was caught up in the blast, and while the explosion was not especially powerful, the close proximity meant that the other vessel was destroyed as well.
"To think that I had actually started to believe that you’d come quietly. Now it’s too late for that. I would have treated you well for a prisoner had actually surrendered. For what you’ve just done though, I’ll make sure that you experience such hell that you wish you were never born. I was only told to bring you back alive. What state you’re in won’t matter." Douvoi said, fury in his eyes and voice as he glared at Kasandra through the screen on his console. ƒree𝑤ebnσvel.com
"Wow, you’re so scary. I’m shivering in terror. I was wrong. I really will come out this time and give myself over. I swear the shuttle won’t explode again." freeweɓnovel.cøm
Kasandra’s response was laced with unfettered sarcasm, and she watched as the veins on Douvoi’s head bulged from rage.
The transmission was abruptly cutoff after that. It seemed that he was done with her and would not continue listening to her mocking him.
"Well, I bought us a little more time. And it only cost us a single cheap shuttle and one of the spies we’ve caught." Kasandra said with a sigh.
She was not sure if this would be enough, but it was the best that she could do.
Now that he deception had been revealed, there was not much else Kasandra could personally do.
Jasmine was commanding the bridge while Avery was fully focused on using his powers to defend the Intrepid so there was not much for her to do there.
Another trick had no chance of working.
Douvoi was thoroughly enraged at this point and would not listen to her no matter what she said.
"I guess the only thing that I can do is help with interrogating the other spy that Olivia caught. I’ll at least be able to tell if they’re lying or not. Maybe they have some information we can use."
...
Avery noticed a sudden surge of energy from an explosion amongst the enemy ships, but he was too engrossed in controlling his psionic powers to ask for a report.
He figured that since it was against their attackers, he would trust that his crew had a handle on the situation.
’I don’t know how they managed to stop the battle for a little while and deal a blow to them, but at least that bought us a bit more time. I’ll have to reward whoever came up with the strategy once were done with this.’ Avery thought.
Any time he had to consider other things quickly vanished, however.
The assault that had let up for a bit was now starting up again in full force.
He could tell that their opponents were more aggressive now as he felt more energy being discharged from their ships.
More enemies also brazenly closed in on the Intrepid, and several were now ignoring his psionic attacks that were hitting their shields.
While it might have been unnerving that they had no idea where the strikes were coming from, Avery was ultimately unable to do much damage.
If he was able to keep his attention on only one target and continuously bombard it, he might eventually break through, but his energy severance power was not that strong. Especially when he was using it at his maximum range.
There was also a hint of fear holding him back from putting more strength into his abilities.
The memory of how he had nearly killed himself when he pushed himself beyond his limits to close a hyperlane entrance was still fresh in his mind.
He already knew that if he was not careful, his body and mind would be overwhelmed by the energy within him that he still hardly understood at all.
Even what he already was doing had started to become a struggle.
Covering for his entire ship was putting an immense strain on him.
"Avery, snap out of it. We need you back here."
Avery’s eyes shot up as he felt Jasmine jostle him and he heard her voice.
He was ready for some bad news and prepared to finally go on the offensive, but Jasmine was wearing a victorious grin instead of looking resolved to give up.
