Chapter 783: Chapter 754: Gage Grant vs. Maeve [016]
Ethan and his mother peeked in from the doorway, not daring to approach this lunatic Diana.
Maeve twisted Diana’s wrist down hard, making Diana grimace in pain.
"Are you going to let go?" Maeve asked coldly.
Diana screeched sharply, "If you don’t get out of this house today, I’ll dump all your mother’s ashes into the frying pan! Wanna see who’s more ruthless? Bring it on!"
Maeve gritted her teeth so hard they almost shattered, lifting her other hand as if to slap Diana.
Diana, wide-eyed with fear, shouted, "Ethan! Call my brothers! Hurry up!"
Ethan looked at them in a panic, clutching his phone, too afraid to make the call.
Diana screamed threateningly, "Call now! If you don’t, you’ll be dead tonight! I’ll have my brother hack you to pieces!"
Ethan shivered all over, his face turning pale in an instant, and sprinted outside to make the call.
Diana laughed wildly, provocatively leaning her face closer to Maeve: "Hit me! Go ahead, hit me! I’m telling you, you’re done for tonight! Hahaha!"
Diana’s brothers were notorious thugs in Z City. Maeve knew if the two of them came, things would get out of hand. But with Diana threatening her mother’s ashes, what could she do? She had no choice but to stand her ground.
With a loud "slap," the sound of a slap echoed loudly in the small prayer room.
Mrs. Chandler, hiding by the door, was so terrified she covered her mouth.
Diana was stunned for a moment, then suddenly went crazy, reaching out with her other hand to slap Maeve. But before the slap could fall, Maeve grabbed her wrist tightly.
Diana, in her fifties and shorter by at least half a head than Maeve, had both her wrists twisted painfully by Maeve, causing her to howl in pain.
Maeve turned to Mrs. Chandler, who was hiding at the door: "Come in and take the urn to my room."
Diana screamed, glaring viciously at Mrs. Chandler: "If you dare help her, I’ll skin your son alive!"
Mrs. Chandler had already taken a few steps forward but hesitated again after Diana’s threat.
Maeve and Diana were in a standoff.
For about twenty minutes, they maintained this standoff, until suddenly the sound of a car engine and crude shouting came from outside.
Diana’s brothers had arrived.
Diana laughed, "Your good days are over, you ungrateful brat!"
Maeve looked at her coldly, "One last time, are you going to let it go?"
"No way! Tonight I’m definitely going to fry your mom in the oil pan!"
As she spoke with enthusiasm and pride, Maeve took advantage of her carelessness, released her left hand, and snatched the urn from Diana’s right hand, protecting it in her arms.
Diana realized what happened and, like a madwoman, lunged to grab it back. But she couldn’t match Maeve’s youth and agility and circled Maeve a few times, ultimately failing to grab it.
The shouting and cursing grew closer, and Diana ran outside, shouting, "Come on, everyone! The ungrateful brat is here!"
The sound of several men’s leather shoes approached rapidly.
Two burly men with facial scars entered the prayer room.
Diana pointed at Maeve: "This is the dead old man’s eldest daughter! She wants to take over my house and even brought her mother’s ashes here! She just slapped me; teach her a lesson!"
The younger one walked in, sizing Maeve up and down a few times, and muttered, "Give me that urn! Are you deliberately trying to disgust my sister by putting that thing here? I’ll beat you to death if you don’t!"
With that, he raised his hand, ready to slap Maeve.
"Hold it." The older one suddenly said, "Let’s talk outside."
The group followed him out.
Maeve placed the urn safely, closed the prayer room door, and then followed them outside.
Diana, disheveled, sat on the sofa, her brothers positioned around her, one by her side and the other standing with arms akimbo by the window.
Ethan and his mother stood at the doorway.
Maeve took out a pack of cigarettes from her coat pocket, lit one, and remained silent.
"Lester helped me in the past. For Lester’s sake, I won’t make this difficult today. You pack up and leave with the urn by tomorrow morning, or don’t blame me for being rude," the older man said.
Maeve sat on the sofa, exhaling clouds of smoke. Wisps of white mist curled out from her pale pink lips.
"Before my dad passed, he put my name on the property’s deed and had it notarized by a lawyer. I own half of this house. Why should I leave?"
The man turned around, looking at her with eyes as cold and heartless as a serpent: "You don’t get along with my sister, so you have to leave. I don’t care if your name is on the deed. I’m telling you right here today, you don’t leave, and tomorrow morning, I’ll send you on your way to join Lester."
Diana’s brother seized the opportunity to menace Maeve cruelly: "Did you hear that? If you’re not gone by tomorrow morning, I’ll crush you!"
This was a classic case of the scholar confronting the brute.
The Dalton Brothers claimed Leo Lester helped them, so they wouldn’t trouble Maeve, while on the other hand, they mercilessly threatened that if she didn’t give up the house, they would kill her.
Maeve knew she couldn’t argue with these kinds of people.
Negotiations reached a stalemate.
Suddenly, from outside came the sound of the garden gate being vigorously shaken.
Ethan and his mother, standing by the door, ran out and quickly returned, poking their heads in cautiously, "There’s a man outside asking for Maeve."
Diana sneered, "Oh! Is the cavalry here?"
Then she glanced viciously at Ethan, "Let him in, and we’ll deal with him too!"
Ethan obediently ran out to open the door.
A moment later, Gage Grant, hands in his pockets, walked into the living room.
Seeing the crowd of people, he paused for a moment, his eyes finally landing on Maeve, pale and sitting on the sofa, as well as the fierce-looking Dalton siblings.
Gage frowned, strode over to Maeve, sized up the Dalton siblings, and asked flatly, "What’s going on?"
