Chapter 609: Chapter 609: Need Me, Rely on Me
Last night, the moment Walker Grant and Chloe Reed entered the market, Walker noticed something was wrong.
Someone was following them.
By the time Chloe Reed felt someone staring at her, the bodyguards had already reported their exact locations to Walker.
Walker had Daniel Hayes covertly protect Chloe, while he went to deal with them himself.
Dealing with a few grunts shouldn’t have required Walker to get involved personally, but he didn’t want those pests to disturb Chloe while she was trying to relax and enjoy the market, so he decided to handle it himself.
Unexpectedly, however, these grunts had come prepared, all of them hiding sharp weapons on their person.
Walker let his guard down for a moment and one of them slashed him across the chest. The wound wasn’t deep, but it was long.
He performed some first aid on the spot, but he was afraid Chloe would notice he was gone and let her imagination run wild, so he and Daniel Hayes quickly cooked up a story.
He was gone for so long mainly because he was getting the wound stitched up.
"..."
After listening to Daniel Hayes’s explanation, Chloe Reed closed her eyes. Her breathing was shaky, and she suddenly recalled the other times he had been injured, covered in blood.
She lowered her eyes and suddenly let out a soft laugh.
Seeing her remain silent, Daniel Hayes couldn’t quite figure out what she was thinking. He asked tentatively, "Miss Chloe, are you... still angry with Mr. Grant for lying to you? He was just afraid of scaring you, that’s all."
"I know."
Chloe said, then lifted her gaze to look at him. "Ever since Vera Holloway started targeting me, has Walker ever been completely unscathed?"
Daniel Hayes fell silent for a moment, then nodded. "Yes."
Speaking as an outsider, he said with a serious expression, "Miss Chloe, I’m not a very educated man, and I’m just speaking honestly here. I don’t know what happened between you two in the past, but judging by how Mr. Grant treats you now, there’s no doubt you’re in his heart. He’s gotten to the point where he’d risk his life for you." fɾēewebnσveℓ.com
Chloe averted her gaze slightly, her eyes drifting to the deep mountain forests in the distance. Her expression grew distant. "Yes, he’s always been fighting with everything he has."
Daniel Hayes blinked in confusion. "Miss Chloe, what are you trying to say?"
"Nothing."
Chloe pulled her gaze back. "Don’t tell him about this conversation. Daniel, you were raised by my grandmother. You should be on my side."
Daniel Hayes hesitated for a moment before finally nodding. "Alright. From now on, I won’t tell him anything about you."
Chloe didn’t press him about why he had chosen to work with Walker. That was all in the past. As long as he didn’t betray her now, that was all that mattered.
She turned and went back inside the clinic.
The moment she pushed the door open, her eyes met Walker’s.
The doctor couldn’t help but chime in from the side, "You’re finally back. Any longer and your man here was about to go check the latrine for you, see if you’d fallen in."
Chloe: "..."
’This doctor certainly has a sense of humor.’
She walked to Walker’s side, pulled over a chair, and sat down. Her gaze was calm as she looked at him. "You didn’t have to lie to me." freeweɓnøvel.com
Walker immediately took her hand. "Chloe, I thought you’d left."
Chloe’s eyelashes fluttered. "I’m not going to leave. I can’t protect myself. Leaving would be no different from suicide."
Walker tightened his grip on her hand. "I know this might not be the right time, but I still want to say it. Chloe, I hope you can always rely on me. That you’ll always need me."
