Chapter 7: Chapter 7: I’ll Get It Done for You Right Away
Tang Yueying pulled her older sister, Tang Yuexuan, over. It was one child asking another. She asked Gu Zhao, "Can we join you guys?"
Gu Zhao barely heard her before nodding, her attention fixed on the sparrows.
Zhong Mingrui was sniffling, tears of indignation rolling down his cheeks.
Tang Yueying could tell Gu Zhao was just brushing her off, but she didn’t get mad. She joined the little squatting squad and looked up at the sparrows.
"CHIRP CHIRP! Another two-legged fledgling! I bet they think I’m super pretty, too!"
The narcissistic little sparrow was promptly hip-checked off the wire by the sparrow next to it.
The narcissistic sparrow flew right back.
Tang Yuexuan rubbed her head awkwardly. Unable to fit in with the kids, she went to eavesdrop on the adults’ circle.
A few more sparrows arrived, landing on the power line and chirping away. When Gu Zhao heard the contents of their chat, her expression suddenly changed.
She immediately stood up to listen more carefully.
"There are a bunch of sleeping two-legged fledglings over there being loaded into a big box. Is it really comfortable to sleep in there?" The newcomer sparrow’s sesame-seed-sized eyes were full of confusion.
"CHIRP, stupid bird! Two-legged fledglings are heavy. How could it possibly be comfortable with so many of them sleeping together?" This sparrow’s voice sounded a bit more mature.
"I know, I know!! That’s a kidnapper’s car, just like the bad two-leggeds who try to catch us!"
"Will they get their feathers plucked and be roasted over a fire, too?" The fattest little sparrow had tears welling up in the corners of its eyes.
"Two-leggeds are so mean, they even catch their own kind."
Gu Zhao beckoned the little sparrows over. "Where’s that car-car? Can you guys take me there?"
The chubby little chirpers looked at each other, then turned to Gu Zhao in unison, perplexed. "Are you talking to us?"
"What car? Where’s a car?" Zhong Mingrui stopped crying and looked all around. "I don’t see one."
Tang Yueying looked from Gu Zhao to the sparrows. She had a feeling Gu Zhao was talking to them.
She stood quietly to one side.
"Of course it’s you guys! If you take me, I’ll treat you all to a feast when I’m rich."
One bold sparrow flew onto Gu Zhao’s shoulder and hopped a few times. "Wow! You can actually understand us!"
Seeing that she wasn’t trying to catch it, the other birds all flew over as well.
"Follow me!" The first sparrow that had landed on her shoulder spread its wings and led the way.
"Brother, there’s a kidnapper car-car!" After shouting a perfunctory warning, Gu Zhao grabbed Zhong Mingrui and Tang Yueying by the hand and chased after the little sparrow.
Her logic was simple: if she ran off with the other kids, the adults would be sure to follow.
The other sparrows followed along, flying behind them.
Tang Yueying and Zhong Mingrui ran with all their might, even faster than Gu Zhao. Eventually, it was the two of them dragging Gu Zhao along...
"Gu Zhao! You’re the real kidnapper here, aren’t you! Let go of those two kids this instant! If I catch you, I swear I’ll spank you raw!" Gu Xulin’s face darkened as he gave chase.
Tang Yuexuan and Zhong Siqi followed close behind.
If they didn’t keep up, they’d all be facing a spanking back home for losing the kids.
[Speechless. All she does is mess around. No wonder Gu Xulin’s pissed. If it were me, I’d have died of anger by now. That little sister is so annoying.]
[Other kids cry when they’re kidnapped, but these two are getting kidnapped and complaining Gu Zhao is too slow. This is just on another level of ridiculous!]
Ye Zexi saw the scene and sneered with contempt. "Same as ever. Always causing trouble."
Ye Zuiyi was inwardly delighted but put on a worried expression. "She must have her reasons..."
"Enough. That’s their business. Let’s go find work. The sooner we earn some money, the sooner we can set off." Ye Zexi cut off her thoughts.
Tong Jianfeng followed behind them, tightly holding Tong Yunxin’s hand.
Tong Yunxin’s face paled slightly. She glanced in the direction Gu Zhao and the others had gone, a flash of envy in her eyes.
...
Little short legs could never outrun their big long legs.
A firsthand account.
Gu Zhao stared resentfully at her short little legs dangling in mid-air. She felt no remorse, only defiance against the unfairness of having such short legs.
Fortunately, the kidnappers’ car the sparrows mentioned was very close.
Gu Zhao struggled for a moment, but with Gu Xulin holding her by the collar, her struggles were completely useless...
"Brother," Gu Zhao said as Gu Xulin lifted her higher, bringing them face to face.
"Don’t bother playing cute. We’re just temporary partners. You’ll serve your time!" Gu Xulin revoked his status as a brother.
Zhong Mingrui escaped from his own brother’s clutches and shouted, "We’re minors! They only arrest the big brothers, not us!"
"Oh, look who’s got a mouth on him!" Zhong Siqi clamped a hand over his brother’s mouth, manually muting him.
Tang Yuexuan looked at them, then at Tang Yueying. She tentatively reached out her hand.
"Sister, don’t learn what you shouldn’t."
[That other group has already gone to find work, and you guys are still here clowning around? I seriously don’t get it.]
[Zhong Siqi: For the love of God! What’s it like to have a little brother whose mouth works faster than his brain!]
[These sisters are hilarious hahaha, Tang Yuexuan’s reverse-psychology move was brilliant! The older sister instantly turned into a good little girl. The younger sister is the real hidden boss!]
[I don’t want to watch Gu Zhao, she’s so much trouble! She’s no help at all and just drags Brother Lin down.]
Tang Yuexuan retracted her hand and stared at the sky, the ground, the distance—and it was then that she saw it.
In the distance was a van with all its windows blacked out. A shifty-looking man walked up to it, glanced around to make sure no one was watching, and then made a hand gesture.
Immediately, a few more men appeared from nearby, carrying an unconscious child, whom they loaded into the van.
Tang Yuexuan’s pupils dilated. "Kidnappers!"
Zhong Siqi sighed. "If you mention kidnappers again, Brother Lin is going to start hitting kids."
Tang Yuexuan shook her head. "Not Gu Zhao, look! Real, live kidnappers! I saw them carry an unconscious kid into the van."
Hearing this, Gu Xulin dropped Gu Zhao and immediately looked over.
They were standing between several cars, which happened to be a blind spot from the kidnappers’ position.
All they could see were several wiry-looking men leaning against the van, smoking and joking around.
"I told you tho! It’s a bad people car." Gu Zhao squeezed between them on her short little legs.
Gu Xulin gave Gu Zhao a thoughtful look, then glanced at the small drone camera hovering in the air. "Call the police."
He then turned to Tang Yuexuan. "You take the kids and get out of here first."
"No," Gu Zhao said.
Just as Gu Xulin was about to lecture the child, he saw the sparrow that had led them there land right on top of Gu Zhao’s head.
Gu Xulin: ...silently backed away.
Seeing that the kidnappers were about to finish their cigarettes, Gu Zhao had no time to argue with Gu Xulin. She looked around and spotted a stray dog urinating on a telephone pole.
Gu Zhao’s eyes lit up. "Brother, you’d better stand back."
She hadn’t forgotten that because "Auntie Dog" had bitten him once, she had been forced to "sell herself" into labor at a tender age to make up for it.
Gu Xulin: ?
Before he could react, Gu Zhao had already run toward the peeing stray.
Everyone else: ??? What is she doing?
After Gu Zhao whispered something in the stray’s ear, the dog’s eyes grew firm, filled with a determination so fierce it looked like it was about to enlist.
"Two-legged pup, you just wait! I’ll get it done for you right away!" With that, the dog dashed into a nearby alley.
