Chapter 58: Chapter 58: Keep It Up, and I’ll Sit You to Death
Completely unaware, Gu Zhao returned to her bedroom.
She sat on the floor, fiddling with the alluring gold and reveling in her good fortune.
But good fortune, after all, has a time limit.
Once the hour of good luck was over, what followed was a strengthened bout of bad luck!
"BANG!"
Gu Zhao’s eyes widened as she watched a piece of the ceiling fall right in front of her! It missed by inches! She could’ve been a goner!
Gu Zhao: ???
"System! What’s going on?!"
Her face was a mask of shock. The gold in her hands had lost its appeal.
["Oh, dear!"] The system’s surprised voice echoed in her mind.
It was followed by the system’s sheepish voice. ["Host... there’s some bad news... After using the skill... there’s also an hour of bad luck... an enhanced version, at that."]
Gu Zhao was so angry she laughed. ’I never should have trusted this system!!’
’This damn skill is a complete piece of shit!’
Downstairs, Gu Xingyu, who was still being chased by the animals, heard the noise from above and his head started buzzing.
’Don’t tell me another burglar showed up!’
The animals, worried about Gu Zhao, gave up the chase and scampered upstairs.
Gu Xingyu, his clothes torn into tassels by the animals, followed them up.
"Sister! Sister! What happened to you?" a little fox exclaimed, running ahead of all the other animals, its face full of worry.
However, just as it got close to Gu Zhao, it tripped on a piece of debris on the floor and went rolling toward her.
Gu Zhao saw this and tried to run, but she was knocked over by the tumbling fox anyway.
Gu Zhao fell flat on her face. Fortunately, she reacted quickly this time and protected her mouth with her hands.
’My teeth are safe!’
The little fox got up, shook its head, and looked at Gu Zhao with a face full of worry and guilt.
’It’s all my fault for being so clumsy and bumping into Sister...’
"Sister..."
Unfortunately, the bad luck wasn’t over. The other animals, seeing Gu Zhao get knocked down, grew even more worried and all rushed over, only to trip on the same ceiling debris.
One by one, they lost their balance and came crashing down on top of Gu Zhao.
Forming a spontaneous dogpile of animals on Gu Zhao.
Gu Zhao’s eyes bulged. From beneath the pile of animals, she stubbornly stuck out a hand and gave the middle finger.
"You damn system!"
After straining to get those words out, she passed out.
Gu Xingyu: !!!!
’She’s not going to die here, is she?!’
He hurriedly called Zhang Bai.
When Zhang Bai received another call from Gu Xingyu, he felt like he was in a fantasy novel. He’d gotten more calls from Gu Xingyu in this one day than he usually did in a week!
Gu Xingyu: "She’s been crushed to death by animals."
Zhang Bai: ???!!
Zhang Bai felt his heart was being surprisingly resilient today. The fact that it hadn’t given out yet was amazing. It was doing a great job.
He immediately dropped his work and rushed over in a panic with a doctor.
...
When Gu Zhao woke up again, the sky was completely dark.
Beside her was a man in a white coat and a group of animals facing the wall, reflecting on their mistakes.
The large python was among them, filled with regret. ’If only I had stayed by Gu Zhao’s side, this never would have happened!’
The man, meanwhile, was watching the animals with curiosity.
"Hungry..." The first thing Gu Zhao did upon waking was cry out that she was hungry.
Hearing her voice, the man came over to check on her. He looked at Gu Zhao with pure admiration. "To be crushed by so many animals and not have a single broken bone... you’re really tough."
The animals also crept over cautiously, checking their footing with every step, terrified they might trip and crush Gu Zhao to death again.
"Sister... we’re sorry..." The animals lowered their heads, looking aggrieved.
The large snake’s head also drooped by Gu Zhao’s bedside.
Despite her hunger, Gu Zhao had to pat each and every one of them to console them.
The man in the white coat grew even more curious.
But he didn’t ask any questions. Working here required tact. Ask less, pry less.
He gave Gu Zhao another check-up, and after confirming she was fine, he left.
Gu Zhao noticed that the person who brought her food was someone new. She’d never seen him before, but it wasn’t a big deal. There weren’t many people she did recognize.
After finishing her meal, she still hadn’t seen Gu Xingyu. She looked at the still-emo animals. "Where did he go?"
The animals thought for a moment. "The two-legger who’s always running went behind the wall."
Gu Zhao thought of the basement. She climbed out of bed and ran downstairs.
Copying what Zhang Bai had done, she easily opened the door. Gu Xingyu wasn’t in the basement.
She scanned the room and saw a sewer entrance.
She remembered what her fourth brother said about their eldest brother always using the sewers. Curious, she climbed down, but she was stopped before she got very far.
They wouldn’t let her pass.
Gu Zhao had no choice but to leave. Zhang Bai came by once to tell her that Gu Xingyu had left on business.
Gu Zhao had reason to suspect he thought she was dead and had made a run for it!
Gu Xingyu’s absence didn’t affect Gu Zhao, since it didn’t seem to make much of a difference whether he was there or not.
On the afternoon of the third day, Zhang Bai took her back to Gu Xulin’s house.
The moment Gu Xulin saw Zhang Bai, he started his usual tirade. Gu Zhao summarized it as: ’You don’t even have kids, yet you steal them. You’re a villain.’
A new day.
Four in the morning.
Several people carrying camera equipment appeared at Gu Xulin’s front door.
"Hello, viewers! This time, we’re having the big partner wake up the little partner!"
They entered the code, opened the door, and, like old pros, walked to Gu Xulin’s room and carefully opened his door.
Gu Xulin was sleeping soundly, completely defenseless. His pajama top had even ridden up, revealing his abs.
A crew member went over and nudged Gu Xulin, but there was no response.
He nudged him again. Gu Xulin mumbled in his sleep, "Gu Zhao, stop messing around. If you keep it up, I’ll sit on you and squash you flat."
The crew: !!
The audience: !!
The crew member tried again, pinching Gu Xulin’s nose. A moment later, Gu Xulin’s eyes shot open, and he woke with a start.
He sat there with a messy bird’s nest of hair, a look of complete confusion on his face.
"Ahem, Teacher Gu, this time we need you to wake up your little partner."
Gu Xulin scratched his hair, suddenly remembering the last time Gu Zhao had scared him awake by pretending to be a burglar.
He was instantly wide awake, a smirk playing on his lips. "Leave it to me!"
’Time for revenge!’
[Hahahaha, last time Gu Zhao scared the soul out of him. Now it’s his turn to get even. My expectations are through the roof!]
[Our Monkey King won’t get scared!]
Gu Xulin found a long wig in the room and arranged the hair over his face.
He also found a white bedsheet and draped it over himself.
He confidently pushed open Gu Zhao’s door, and then, under everyone’s watchful eyes, he got down on all fours on the floor.
"Gu Zhao..."
"Oh, Gu Zhao..."
He crawled to the side of the bed. Gu Zhao was still asleep, her head buried under the covers without a stir.
Gu Xulin confidently pressed his face close, then slowly pulled back the blanket, eager to see Gu Zhao’s terrified, waking face.
But the moment he lifted the blanket...
Gu Xulin: "AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"
Gu Zhao’s eyes were closed, and a trickle of red blood stained the corner of her mouth.
Beside her pillow was a fruit knife, also covered in the same red liquid.
The crew members who went forward to see: !!! AHHHHHHHHHHH!
The person on the bed suddenly opened her eyes and sat bolt upright.
Her face filled the camera lens.
Bullet Screen: [AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!]
Gu Zhao rubbed her ears, completely baffled.
"What did I ever do to deserve this?!" Waking someone up in the middle of the night!
Gu Xulin hadn’t even recovered from the shock when he saw red liquid start to drip from her ear as well.
In that instant, it was as if all the strength had been drained from him. His eyelids suddenly grew heavy, and he fell straight backward, stiff as a board.
