Chapter 719: Chapter 717 Ready to Take Away at Any Time [1 More Update]
"Hmm! You’ve become more composed than before," Lillian Morris said calmly.
"It’s quiet inside, and my heart has calmed too," Jane Spencer spoke with a hint of guilt and inferiority in her words.
Yet, neither of them mentioned the events of the past, nor did they debate who was right or wrong. Lillian Morris didn’t blame Jane Spencer for not listening to her advice, which led to such an outcome.
Lillian looked at the woman with a head full of white hair in front of her, feeling rather conflicted. Sharing a bed seemed like a previous life’s memory, so distant, so distant.
The two sat facing each other, but there was nothing more to say.
Apart from the white hair, Jane Spencer’s face hadn’t changed, nor had she aged.
If she had changed in any way, it was that her brows and eyes had become kinder; she was no longer as sharp as before.
Lillian smiled at her, picked up the pastries from the chair beside her, and placed them on the table: "These are the things you love to eat. I wasn’t in S City for the past two years, so I couldn’t come to see you."
"Thank you! Actually, I’ve been doing quite well here, much more relaxed than before. Thank you for still thinking of me," Jane’s eyes fell on the pastries, and her eyes turned red again. She didn’t know what else to say to him.
Lillian, seeing her expression, smiled brightly and said with composure, "It’s getting late, and the weather is cold. Take care of yourself and rest early." After saying this, Lillian stood up from the chair.
Today, he just came to see Jane Spencer and didn’t have much to say to her.
It’s the New Year, so he brought some pastries she loves, hoping she’ll have a good year.
Jane Spencer, seeing Lillian stand up, immediately stood up as well, looking at Lillian with nervousness, responding, "Hmm, you take care of yourself too."
At this moment, the prison officer brought over the sweater Jane mentioned. Jane took the sweater, carefully walked up to Lillian, and handed it to him: "Lillian, this is the sweater I knitted for Liam and Maya’s baby. He can wear it next winter. Could you please help me pass it on to them?"
Lillian took the sweater, nodded, and said, "Sure!"
The sweater was goose yellow, very soft and beautiful. Inside the sweater was a pair of small knitted shoes.
In prison, apart from reading, Jane had nothing else to do. Upon hearing that Maya was pregnant, she asked the prison officer to buy her some yarn, and she began to learn to knit. She unraveled and re-knit it several times before she was satisfied with her work.
She didn’t know when Liam would visit her again, so she entrusted Lillian with it; besides, with Maya pregnant, Liam would definitely be there 24/7 to take care of her.
Jane had long seen Liam’s affection for Maya from the moment he agreed to tutor Maya, he had feelings for her.
Who was Liam, after all? Even if it was their grandfather’s request, if he didn’t want to, no one could make him do it.
After all, the guy just wanted to get closer to Maya.
In the end, he was happier than she was because he knew what he wanted and wouldn’t make mistakes.
As Jane watched Lillian leave, watching his retreating back as he exited the meeting room, her tears began to fall uncontrollably.
She looked at Lillian and choked up, saying, "Lillian, I’m sorry!"
Lillian hesitated for a moment upon hearing Jane’s apology, but he didn’t turn back, merely saying nonchalantly, "Have a good New Year!"
They had known each other for many years, yet it was the first time he heard her cry. Back when they weren’t divorced, he knew how to comfort her; now, nothing he did seemed appropriate.
So, he didn’t turn back. After his momentary hesitation, he once again took a step to leave.
On the way back, Lillian’s eyes remained on the sweater beside him. He raised his watch to check the time; it was 10 o’clock, not too late. So, he turned the steering wheel to the right and headed towards Liam’s apartment.
In Liam’s apartment, he had just finished telling Maya a bedtime story and putting her to sleep when the doorbell rang.
After tucking the blanket snugly around Maya, Liam calmly got out of bed and went to the living room.
He saw Lillian through the monitor, and his brows furrowed involuntarily, wondering why this guy was coming to their house so late.
When Liam opened the door, he didn’t ask anything but let Lillian in.
As he followed Lillian into the house, he noticed that the bag in Lillian’s hand contained a sweater.
Before Liam could say anything, Lillian spoke first, "Maya’s asleep?"
"Yeah, she just fell asleep," Liam replied nonchalantly, feeling rather odd being visited by an old rival so late, checking on his wife.
Lillian’s eyes couldn’t help but glance towards the bedroom, but he didn’t see Maya.
He was actually quite eager to see Maya’s pregnant form, as he hadn’t seen her for a long time.
Seeing this, Liam couldn’t help but chuckle, then prepared a cup of hot tea for Lillian and handed it to him, "Are you afraid I’d hide her from you so you couldn’t see her? Do I need to do that?"
Liam, in front of any man, had nothing to fear. He believed that Maya loved only him.
Lillian shrugged with a smile, "Showing off, are you? If you don’t treat Maya well, I’ll take her away anytime."
"I’m afraid you won’t get that chance."
"Lillian, on another note, I actually have to thank you for helping me pursue Maya. If you hadn’t advised me that Maya is very fragile inside, and to just be kind to her, she would surely feel it, I’d probably still be a mess. I’ll treat you to a drink someday," Liam said, obviously boasting.
"So it turns out I lost to myself, not to you," Lillian self-mocking.
Then, he handed the sweater in his hand to Liam, "Just came back from prison. It’s a sweater Jane knitted for the baby, asking me to give it to you."
Suddenly, Liam was taken aback, realizing he hadn’t visited Jane in a long time. He hadn’t expected her to still be thinking of him and to have knitted a sweater for the child.
Liam stared at the sweater for a moment, then courteously said, "Thank you!"
Lillian saw the flash of confusion in the man’s eyes and knew he no longer hated Jane.
Actually, Liam had never really hated Jane. Many times, he felt helpless too.
If Jane hadn’t gone too far, they wouldn’t have ended up like this. After all, she was his sister, whom he had called ’sister’ for over twenty years.
"Get some rest! I’m heading back," Lillian stood up.
"Alright, I’ll treat you to a drink another day and introduce you to a girlfriend," Liam got up to see him off.
Lillian shook his head helplessly, "I don’t need a girlfriend, but I can drink."
"We’ll keep in touch by phone!"
Liam had just seen Lillian off and shut the door when he saw Maya walking out of the bedroom barefoot.
At the sight, Liam immediately went up to her and scooped her up, scolding, "Maya, how can you get out of bed barefoot?"
Maya pouted her lips and explained, "I heard someone talking in the living room, and I woke up. When I came out, I saw you had already sent them off. Who came? Why so late?"
"Your old flame!" Liam’s words carried a hint of jealousy.
