Chapter 6: Ch 6: Changing Tides
"Die, you shining crap."
Speaking of Enzo, he had found himself a new hobby.
The archer who had been killed before, left a crack in the defensive line surrounding the high grounds.
And as the two forces battled against each other, some of the Windsor men had still pursued the way used by their dead brethren and attempted to sneak upon the lady lying atop the short hill.
But was she the only person lying on the high grounds? No.
And thus, as a person who loved his own life, Enzo had acted quickly and started firing arrows at the sneaky intruders.
It was true that he had a frail body in his past life. But a frail will? Enzo would rather slit his wrists before ever accepting such a pathetic outcome.
And all his hardwork from his previous life were now paying off as each arrow he fired landed on his targets with a precision that might have even shocked Draven had he been present nearby.
Raising the bow, he fired yet another arrow. It shot in a parabolic path before lodging itself into the man’s calves. This made him lose his balance as he stumbled and went tumbling down the rocky slope.
"He really thought a small shield would save him from my majestic shot." Enzo snickered, his fingers already grasping another arrow.
His eyes were now glistening, a stark contrast to his previously cautious nature.
He nocked arrows after arrows and killed off a dozen ambushers.
Enzo was excited. And his actions spoke more than words could describe this new feeling he was now drunk on.
’I finally have a body, untainted by any terminal disease.’
While it was true his body was still fragile, mostly due to malnourishment, it was still a disease free body.
And the difference was palpable to Enzo, who had never felt so much energy rush through his veins.
"Finally, finally, I am living!" He exclaimed, while puncturing a hole through a soldier’s chest.
He reached for his quiver, only to find nothing. For a brief moment, a frown appeared followed by an imperceptible nervous expression. freewebnσvel.cѳm
"Nah, I am overthinking it."
But his usual nature did nothing to stop a grin from splitting his face.
"If I don’t have arrows..." He spun the bow in his hand and said, "then I just have to beat the fuck out of them until this piece of wood breaks."
"My, my, such crude sentences."
Enzo froze, hearing a gleeful laughter. His head snapped backwards as he came face to face with Lady Lysandra, who was now sitting with her body balanced on her palms. Her gaze was however, focused on him.
"Where is Draven?" She asked simultaneously, choosing to ignore her previous statement.
"M-my lady", Enzo reined in his bearings as shame crept up his neck on being discovered behaving in such a childish manner.
Then seeing her inquiring look, he remembered her question and answered, "Lord Draven is with the Shogun. He told me to stay here and look after you."
"As expected of my husband." Lysandra nodded in satisfaction as she eyed him with curiousity, "Do you have a name?"
"No, my lady. I am...just a nameless." Enzo almost replied with his real name but somehow stopped himself at the last second.
"Ohh?"
Now it was Lysandra’s time to be surprised as her eyebrows quirked upwards.
"A nameless that can shoot arrows better than any of my husband’s named disciples?" Her voice was inlaid with sarcasm as she emphasised on the named disciples.
"You saw that?" He asked back with slightly widened eyes.
Lysandra let out a small laugh, almost amused with the situation. "Nameless, I have been awake for some time now. But seeing how much you were enjoying, I chose to relax a little more. Now then, would you not tell me why you are still a nameless? While not exactly a prodigy, you are still on equal terms with any high level, young warrior of our clan."
"I haven’t received any opportunity to showcase any achievement." Enzo shrugged, avoiding eye contact with her.
Lysandra went silent as well but he could feel her stare on his back, making him quite uncomfortable.
A sigh echoed behind him as the ruffling of dress caught his attention. He looked behind and just as he had thought, Lady Lysandra was getting up from the ground.
Enzo quickly intervened, "My lady, where are you going?"
Dusting away the dirts on her back, she glanced at him with a comfused look.
"Where to, you ask? Obviously to my husband."
"But my lady--" Enzo however, was cut off as she raised her palms, indicating him to stop.
"You are afraid of Draven getting mad at you for not stopping me?"
Despite her posture emanating pure authority, her voice still carried a playful tilt.
"Umm, yes..."
Hearing his hesitating reply, she cackled out loud.
"How funny! Say, do you really think you can keep me here if I don’t want to?"
Enzo realised where the conversation was heading to. Seeing his silence, Lysandra nodded and continued, "So there is no need to be fearful of him. He won’t punish you because of my decision."
She then stepped beside him, looking downwards.
"Ho? So many soldiers just to kill a woman? I am so touched by the gesture." Lysandra dramatically brought her hands to her chest in a mocking tone.
Enzo meanwhile, resisted the urge to roll his eyes.
’Obviously, they had backups! You are the Sea Mage afterall.’ But of course, he didn’t dare say all that aloud.
Just because she had been all polite with him doesn’t mean he would let his guard down completely. Moreover, he had no idea of her character, who was supposed to die in the first Chapter only.
The author had only stated she was the Sea Mage, one of the strongest in the Hermann clan. And conveniently, she was killed at her most vulnerable moment.
"Look at them, running away like headless chicken. Seems they can see me now." She laughed lightly as she said that.
Then she pointed her index finger at the fleeing men.
"Do you know what my affinity is?"
"Water?" Enzo offered the most obvious answer.
Lysandra nodded before focusing back on the Windsor assassins. She held out her finger and closed one of her eyes.
Suddenly, the soldiers running downhill all stumbled and crashed downwards, their metallic armour striking against the rough terrain.
"You made the entire slope slippery..." Enzo exclaimed seeing such a massive scale of power.
Lysandra smiled faintly at the praise and then waved her hand as a thousand of water droplets appeared above her. Then at a single command from her, they all dropped below with an increasing speed.
"...Eh?"
Enzo let out a surprised sound, to which Lysandra simply said, "Look carefully."
And true to her words, the moment the droplets touched the metallic armours of the unmoving soldiers, crackling explosions took over all the sounds on the battlefield.
It was as if a tsunami had just slammed onshore, drowning everything under its immense tidal pressure.
Even watching it made Enzo’s hairs stand out as goosebumps covered his skin. The noise was deadly and just by hearing it, Enzo felt as if he was the victim upon whom the droplets had been landing.
By the time the explosions stopped, the battlefield had gone completely silent. All eyes were now directed at the top of the short hill: At the lady standing above them all.
Lysandra Hermann. The Sea Mage.
