Chapter 5: Temporarily Healed
Charles returned to Charlotte’s room on shaky feet.
It looked the same as it had before. Charlotte was still fast asleep, showing no signs of waking.
He managed to shuffle over to her. Only then did he realise just how drained he was.
Just a few more steps...
He arrived at her bedside, helped sit Charlotte up so she wouldn’t choke, and opened the lid of the vial.
Afterwards, he used one hand to gently open Charlotte’s mouth.
Her pink lips parted, and he poured the blue liquid down her throat.
He waited for a few seconds as the liquid slid down her throat. At first, nothing happened.
Come on... Please work.
A few more seconds passed, and nothing happened.
And then... Charlotte’s veins suddenly started to glow. Bright blue liquid with stars flowing through it could be seen beneath her skin.
Her skin became less pale. Her body looked less famished.
It was as though the dragon’s blood was actively healing her with every passing second.
Charles smiled widely. Not just because he was proud of himself, but also because he was happy to see her in a better state.
Charlotte’s eyes opened...
Her silver eyes immediately landed on Charles. A smile spread across her face.
Then, she coughed up more blood. Traces of the blue liquid were mixed in with the droplets.
The smile was immediately wiped off Charles’s face.
I... I thought...
Charlotte wiped the blood from her mouth again and sat up a bit more. It was clear that she was still unhealthy, but she was certainly much better than when he had first seen her.
She looked at Charles and smiled again.
"Don’t be alarmed. This is only a temporary healing, but it will at least give me an hour to stay awake."
So that’s it. She’s so weak that finding a permanent fix isn’t so simple.
He wanted to ask what he needed to do to help her. Seeing that smile made him want to see it again, permanently.
But she spoke first.
"We should use this time wisely, so that I can give you answers. First, I want to thank you deeply."
Her words were soft and warm.
"You didn’t have to help me. You could have left me here. It speaks volumes of your character."
Charles couldn’t help but feel proud of himself, but he didn’t show it.
Instead, he brushed it off as though it were only the natural course of action.
"It’s no problem. I’m just glad to see you’re okay... even if it is temporary," he responded.
There it was again. Her cheeks blushed slightly, but her words didn’t suggest that she was feeling shy.
How could the powerful creator of this world be shy over such a small comment?
"Rather than me explaining things to you, do you have any questions you would like to ask first?" Charlotte’s soft voice spoke.
Charles thought for a few moments, rubbing his chin. Then, he asked,
"How did you pull me here?"
Charlotte looked over at her notebook resting on the desk.
Then, she lifted it up.
His eyes went wide. When he had tried to lift it, it hadn’t even budged an inch.
It’s as I thought... Author privileges.
"This is my notebook, where I write down all the ideas and plans for my novel. Inside, there is a character sheet. Whoever I write into it will exist. The more information I add, the more detailed the character will be."
"You have engaged with this novel since its very beginning. You have mentioned many things about yourself in forums and chatrooms about the novel. Through this, I was able to write a fictional character that matched your real self closely enough. With the help of a large amount of power, I was able to pull your consciousness into this world."
Charles remained silent, trying to process what he had just heard.
Although it still sounded unreal, he now had a slight understanding of what had happened.
Still, it only raised more questions.
"Can I see my character sheet?"
Charlotte immediately shook her head.
"No, you shouldn’t look at anything in this notebook. It is for the author’s eyes only, and will most likely kill you."
As I expected.
Afterwards, he found himself looking Charlotte up and down. There was something else that had been nagging at him.
"How did you end up here then?"
Charlotte tapped her notebook again.
"A few months ago, I discovered the strange power that my story contained. I was eventually pulled into the story and continued writing it from the inside. That was when the problems started."
Charlotte’s voice trailed off slightly, as though she had been filled with a great sadness.
Charles had a feeling he knew what it was.
"It’s him, isn’t it? That villain you mentioned in the final Chapter."
She nodded.
"Yes... *****. He is a man who managed to find my notebook in the real world and write himself into it as a character. Once here, he fell in love with the power system and started using it for evil. Not only does he wish to bring about a fifth apocalypse and take the lives of millions, but he also does everything he can to take power from me and my story."
Charles was slowly gathering more knowledge, but he found himself getting frustrated. fгeewebnovёl.com
Every time she mentioned this villain, her voice either went silent or was replaced with random nonsense.
It was as though she was speaking gibberish.
"Why aren’t you telling me his name?"
Charlotte’s brow rose.
"I am?"
"..."
A chill ran through Charles’s body.
At that moment, he felt that he was beginning to understand the gravity of the situation.
Was this man some sort of co-author of the story? If so, does he have the power to rewrite the story whenever he hears himself being spoken about?
If that’s the case...
He shook his head and decided to stray away from the topic for now.
Instead, he asked something else.
"What should be my next focus? How can I permanently heal you?"
Charlotte reached into the pocket of her gown and took out a folded piece of paper.
"My body requires numerous items before I can be fully healed, but before you can do that, you will need to focus on yourself."
His attention was suddenly drawn back to his worsening condition.
Not only was he completely drained, but he was also hungry and thirsty.
His belly rumbled at that moment.
"You will need to become stronger by clearing out some of the tower floors. You should know how much strength can be earned in this tower."
She was right. The tower here in Elurion was a gold mine of rewards and opportunities.
Charlotte lifted a weak hand and gave the folded paper to Charles.
On it, he found a list of ten items. At the top was blue dragon’s blood.
"Along the way, if you find any of these items... you can bring them to me, b-but only if you want to. If my body absorbs all ten ingredients, I will be able to stay awake for a normal amount of time."
As she spoke, Charlotte looked away from Charles nervously.
She’s giving me a choice to help her? Is this because she feels guilty for bringing me into this world?
She shouldn’t feel guilty. She had her reasons for doing this.
She entrusted me with saving the lives of millions.
She felt lonely and put her trust in me to save her world... me, a man she had never met.
And besides...
Charles suddenly patted Charlotte’s head. Immediately, her eyes widened and her cheeks blushed brighter than ever before.
"Isn’t it a husband’s job to look after his wife?"
The author became flustered.
Now, it was impossible for her to meet Charles’s eyes.
"Ah, I didn’t explain that part... It’s just, I thought that once we left this tower, it would be an easier way to explain why we were with one another. Especially to my family..."
So she does have family in this world too... Will I get to meet them someday?
He couldn’t help but chuckle at her nervousness.
He found himself looking forward to a future that might be possible.
"It’s fine. Being married to such a beautiful woman isn’t so bad."
"!"
Charlotte almost let out a yelp of shock.
"I... I..."
Before she could say anything, she was cut off by Charles’s belly rumbling again.
The growl echoed through the room.
"Ah... I think I’ll head back into the tower to find something to eat. I’ll see if I can bring you back one of those items from the list too."
