Chapter 71: Chapter 71: New Dishes and New Ideas
"I’m so stupid, really." Betty wore a playfully traumatized expression, sitting on the chair in a daze, which made Christine seriously wonder what Chen Ze had done to this succubus.
"I should never have entered the kitchen, especially not the manager’s kitchen." Betty didn’t even know how to describe her current emotions.
Betty had eaten many things, and among them were quite a few that a demon wouldn’t want to eat, or rather, would be reluctant to eat. The black bread with swamp moss that she ate while under the slaver’s control seemed even tastier compared to what she had today.
Betty couldn’t remember how she managed to eat that bite of noodles. More accurately, her memory was completely cut off after that bite of weird noodles entered her mouth.
"What happened to you just now?" Christine asked curiously, while her eyes were fixed on the buffet that Betty had just set down.
"I only remember the manager having me taste his new experimental dish... It seemed to be something called noodles... and then I can’t remember anything." Betty shook her head, even suspecting that Chen Ze had cast some kind of mental forgetfulness magic on her.
Meanwhile, Christine didn’t respond to Betty’s words; she was blissfully enjoying the dessert from Earth.
As an assassin of the Shadow Alliance, Christine rarely went to restaurants to eat, even if she did, it was always for a mission. frёeweɓηovel.coɱ
But she didn’t expect that behind this special portal, there would be such a magical restaurant with such magical cuisine.
"Buffet? Strange name, did the manager name it after his girlfriend?" Christine squinted her eyes in enjoyment.
"I haven’t heard the manager mention the origin of the dish’s name." Watching Christine’s satisfied expression, Betty inexplicably felt her mood lighten a lot.
Chen Ze didn’t eavesdrop on the conversation between the two; he was intently watching the pot in front of him.
Hot & Sour Soup. After many failures, Chen Ze finally made a normal Hot & Sour Soup and recorded all the ingredients and their quantities in his notebook.
"Hmm... this is the flavor." Chen Ze nodded in satisfaction; this bowl of Hot & Sour Soup was exactly to his taste.
"It seems that going to culinary school was a wise decision." Chen Ze swung his chef’s knife; he knew his own skills, from initially chopping cubes as if cutting dices, to now perfectly dicing as intended, Chen Ze’s culinary progress was quite rapid.
"But I should also consider setting up a food stall outside." Chen Ze scratched his head, there wasn’t much money left in his WeChat account.
Moreover, Chen Ze wanted to know what he would get if that string of progress bars on the System filled up.
"Manager, add another order of buffet!" Betty said to Chen Ze with caution at the kitchen door.
"Alright." Chen Ze nodded and turned around, only to see the cautious look on Betty’s face, which made the corners of his mouth twitch.
That pot of fruit noodles from just now... Chen Ze glanced at his kitchen trash can; the noodles were already in there. He had tasted a strand of the noodles and then gave up on the idea.
The fact was that noodles didn’t go well with fruit, and it could even give one a sense of dark cuisine, much like a herbal infusion with noodles.
Although there were many successful cases on Baidu, even with recipes... Chen Ze’s own creation was a failure.
"Tsk, what should I make for the next dish?" Chen Ze stroked his chin, feeling that after his knife skills had improved, he fell into a state of self-satisfaction.
If it weren’t for some self-awareness, Chen Ze would have even considered challenging the famous Wen’s Tofu.
"I’ll go to the market early tomorrow morning to check it out, not sure if we can buy it here." Chen Ze recalled a delicious dish he once had at a barbecue stall.
The first time he saw it, Chen Ze thought it was pure oil, he even believed that his sister just wanted to make him fat and attack him both physically and mentally.
Chen Ze was resistant, Chen Ze was disdainful, Chen Ze declared that he had seen through Chen Xingchen’s evil intentions.
Until he was forced to eat a piece, and then he couldn’t stop himself, utterly succumbing to its tender and instantly melting deliciousness.
Chen Ze even found ancient comments about this ingredient on Baidu.
There was a thin, crispy shell on the outside, and once bitten into, it seemed as if there was nothing inside, just a pocket of clear water.
That was the review for the ingredient, and reflecting on the sensation of eating it, Chen Ze felt it was incredibly accurate.
"Manager? What are you thinking about?" Betty waved her hand in front of Chen Ze’s eyes, snapping him out of his reverie.
"Me? I’m thinking about a new dish." Chen Ze wiped the drool from the corner of his mouth, finding himself salivating at the memory.
"New... a new dish?" Betty immediately took several steps back, standing at the doorway of the kitchen.
"Don’t be nervous, that thing... hiss... is particularly delicious." Chen Ze couldn’t help but wipe his mouth again.
Thinking about it, he hadn’t had that dish for quite a long time.
"Alright, Manager, Christine has finished her meal, it’s time to charge her." In the Dream Restaurant, the task of billing was always personally handled by Chen Ze, not because he didn’t trust Betty, but because Chen Ze didn’t know how to price his own dishes.
The same dish held completely different values in the hearts of different customers.
For a light cheesecake, Sebastian was willing to pay one Gold Coin, while Alisa had said that the dish was worth at most one silver coin.
The prices were vastly different, and sometimes customers even paid with ingredients, so billing was something that only Chen Ze could do.
"Manager, how much for the bill, how many silver coins?" Christine asked, contentedly patting her stomach, feeling for the first time that eating was a pleasure, not just for survival.
"Four silver coins." Chen Ze thought that one Buffet for one silver coin, and one braised pork for two silver coins, was a quite fair price.
"Okay, will that door always be there?" Christine quickly placed four silver coins on the table, then asked.
"I open the door every night, if it’s not open then something came up temporarily." Chen Ze answered quickly, then decided to have Betty write out the restaurant’s approximate business hours the next day and place them at the front door.
After seeing Christine off, Chen Ze didn’t make any more dishes, much to the relief of a very anxious Betty.
"Betty, you go ahead and leave first." Chen Ze checked the time; it was almost Hastur’s dinner time.
Although he was not sure if the Ancient Ruler would come, Chen Ze still planned to send Betty home first.
"It’s okay, Manager, I am a waitress after all." Betty seemed totally relaxed.
Chen Ze, observing Betty’s shaky legs, fell into deep thought.
