"I don’t want to, Mommy, I still want to sleep~" Elizabeth crawled out of bed and rubbed her eyes.
"You little sleepyhead, don’t forget that today is your Daddy’s birthday. Doesn’t the lovely little Elizabeth want to give a gift to Daddy?" The woman picked up Elizabeth and spun her around.
"Giggle~ Elizabeth wants to give Daddy a present too! Elizabeth wants to be Daddy’s bride!" Watching the charming and cute Elizabeth, the woman laughed happily.
"Mommy! Mommy! Let’s go water the flowers!" Elizabeth tugged at her mother’s hand, heading toward the garden.
"Mommy, what flower is this?" Elizabeth curiously looked at the flower in front of her, so brightly red it seemed as if blood would drip from it.
"This is the poisonous rose with thorns—Lafra, Elizabeth, you must be careful." The woman pulled Elizabeth behind her.
Although Lafra was beautiful, it was poisonous and could cause injury if touched carelessly.
Seeing the somewhat scared Elizabeth, the woman thought for a moment and then knelt down, gently holding her daughter’s shoulders.
"Elizabeth, do you know that although Lafra is a poisonous rose, its floral language is hope?" The woman said with a smile, playfully flicking her daughter’s nose.
"Why?" Elizabeth peeked out, curiously looking at the thorny rose before her.
"Because you see, once there was someone who caught a strange illness, and even the Priest couldn’t do anything about it, but after looking at Lafra, the patient miraculously recovered," the woman made up a story.
Elizabeth curiously looked at the flower before her, really beautiful, she liked it very much.
"Elizabeth, your birthday is coming up in a few days, what gift would you like?" The woman smiled and ruffled her daughter’s hair.
"I want... I want Lafra! I want lots and lots of Lafra!" Elizabeth looked up, smiling brilliantly, she liked this flower.
"Lafra? Lafra?" Chen Ze shook the daydreaming Lafra’s shoulder, unable to help himself.
"Hmm? Chen Ze, what’s up?" Lafra shook her head; she felt like she’d just recalled a memory that had been sealed away.
That memory, so fresh in her mind, made Lafra sigh.
"Is the cake not to your liking? Do you want me to change it?" Chen Ze was a bit nervous, not knowing why, but ever since Lafra hugged him, he was particularly concerned about her opinion.
Lafra lifted her head and looked into Chen Ze’s eyes.
"My birthday, if converted to the time you just mentioned, should be on May 20th," Lafra said, smiling at Chen Ze.
"Mommy... all I want for my birthday present is you... I just want you to be well..." Elizabeth cried uncontrollably, hiding under her blanket.
"Right! Lafra!" Elizabeth ran out, remembering that a year ago, because of her request, many Lofras had been planted in the garden.
Ignoring the maid’s attempts to stop her, Elizabeth rushed in and picked a few Lofras, then ran quickly to her mother’s room.
"Elizabeth! What are you doing! Don’t you know your mother needs rest?" The man was a little angry, seeing his daughter’s frantic behavior.
"What’s going on? Why is there so much blood on your hands? You grabbed Lafra barehanded?" The man rushed over quickly; Lafra was poisonous, and the Priest must be called immediately.
"Mommy, Mommy, you’ll definitely get better!" Elizabeth struggled to lift the bloody Lafra, wanting her gravely ill mother to see it.
A strong sense of paralysis attacked Elizabeth’s body, and she slumped softly to the ground.
The last thing she heard before she passed out was the voice of her father calling the butler to find the Priest.
Her mother had still left, the hopeful Lafra had not helped her mother overcome the illness, and the Grim Reaper took away Elizabeth’s mother, took away the man’s wife.
"Elizabeth, my daughter, can you please stop this?" the man looked worriedly at his daughter who wouldn’t leave her room, helplessly patting her door.
There was no response from inside the room, complete silence, if it were not for the maid inside ensuring the daughter’s safety, the man would have already lost his patience and rushed in.
"Elizabeth, it’s your birthday, spend it with me," the man leaned against the door, helplessly slumping to the floor.
He had lost his wife and could not accept losing his daughter as well.
"Lafra, do you want to spend your birthday together?" Chen Ze sat opposite Lafra, looking somewhat restrained.
"Hmph... If you ask me, I’ll spend it with you," Lafra huffed softly, her head lowered.
On any ordinary day, Chen Ze would have already given up and headed back to the kitchen, but today, for some reason, he actually spoke up.
"Let’s spend it together, shall we, Lafra?" Chen Ze was a bit nervous, his heart beating rapidly.
"Let’s spend it together, shall we, Elizabeth?" the man asked with concern, looking at his daughter across the dining table.
"..." Elizabeth gave no response, her vacant eyes and wooden expression caused the man even more pain.
A year had gone by, and his daughter had always been like this, like an emotionless doll.
Elizabeth lay in bed, her window closed; she didn’t want to see the external Lafra, that flower symbolizing hope, which did not bring her the hope she desired.
Elizabeth kicked off her blanket; she wanted to fall ill, her mother had died because of illness, she wanted to see her mother, even if just for a glance.
Elizabeth pushed open the window, cautiously, not looking at the scene outside, but she could hear the sound of rain.
The cold wind blew into the bedroom, and Elizabeth lay on the bed shivering, her body constantly trembling, but stubbornly not covering herself with the blanket.
To prevent the maid and father from entering, she locked the door and barricaded it with a stool.
Blurred into slumber, Elizabeth drifted into sleep, and it was very cold in her dream, she felt that she would definitely fall ill the next day.
Unexpectedly, Elizabeth felt warmth on her body, as if she were wearing the sweater her mother had made for her.
Elizabeth opened her eyes; there was nothing on her, the cold wind was no longer blowing, Elizabeth suddenly sat up and ran to the window, which was closed—probably shut by the wind.
She was dreaming, for the first time in so long, she had dreamt, and in that dream, her mother had embraced her tenderly, slipped a sweater over her, and had closed the window.
Elizabeth stupidly touched the window, looking at the clear night sky outside, and at the Lafra beneath the sky, vibrant and luscious.
"Mom, from now on, I’ll be called Lafra Elizabeth."
Lafra looked at Chen Ze with surprise, this was the first time, Chen Ze hadn’t walked away.
Mom, maybe I should change my name to Chen Ze, Lafra Elizabeth...
