Chapter 80: Chapter 80: Cleared with a Mental Patient

Jiang Che was silent. "This is different."

After coming out of the dungeon, he felt himself change, yet he couldn’t pinpoint exactly where those changes had happened.

He felt his body get a little stronger, his mind more resilient, his senses sharper, and his gut instincts keener than before.

He knew this was what everyone called the ’first-clear reward.’

He could also sense this corrosive liquid wasn’t ordinary.

His physical state had improved, but the corrosion didn’t slow down at all; his body showed no signs of healing. He realized then—the liquid was not normal, not something that could be treated by conventional means.

But Xiong Jie didn’t agree. Unless it was a matter of life and death, he wouldn’t swallow the one that belonged to him.

Over on Ding Ning’s side, she watched Jiang Che and Xiong Jie interacting. Ding Ning spoke, "That’s why I don’t want him to do it like this."

I just want him, when it comes time to protect his own life, to pick what he thinks is the best way to survive.

Jiang Che still had two Life Essence left. He took one from his palm and placed it in Xiong Jie’s mouth.

Xiong Jie was stunned. He knew Jiang Che had a lot; plus, Jiang Che was his master’s ’husband’. He never expected, never dared to imagine, that Jiang Che would share his with him.

He didn’t care if this human was treated by his master as a subordinate or just a plaything; the status and position were beyond his reach.

But as soon as it touched his mouth, he felt the pain dissolve. His skin started itching—this was the sensation of flesh growing back.

"You..." Xiong Jie looked at the man in front of him, the one everyone called mentally ill.

Why did he...

Xiong Jie, using completely normal human logic, tried to figure Jiang Che out. If it had been him, he would hold onto one, wouldn’t use it now. If he had two, still wouldn’t use them.

Even if he had ten, until the hospital said there was no way to save him, he’d never use such a thing for survival.

Was it to win someone over?

A new thought rose in Xiong Jie’s heart, but he quickly dismissed it. He was already his master’s slave; he had no say in his life anymore.

Jiang Che had no reason to buy him off.

So then, why did Jiang Che do it?

Xiong Jie couldn’t wrap his head around it—and for a moment, even forgot to say thanks.

Ding Ning and the others watched the screen. Besides visuals from Xiong Jie’s perspective, there was also a voiceover with Xiong Jie’s inner thoughts.

Every move Xiong Jie made was transparent.

Upon hearing these thoughts, Ding Ning and the others burst out laughing.

"Because he doesn’t know— to Che, he’s Uncle Xiong, not a slave." Ding Ning didn’t blame Jiang Che for giving something to Xiong Jie.

Although Jiang Che hadn’t thought of it this way, she saw it as a great way to win someone over.

There was still so much Jiang Che wanted to learn, and he’d need Xiong Jie’s genuine help during this time.

"Has he always been like this...?" Hua stared at Jiang Che. This human was almost too pure.

Ding Ning nodded, then turned to leave. She had her own business—she wasn’t going to orbit around Jiang Che, as long as she knew he was safe.

The screen was left where it was, so Blood Slaughter and the others could check on Jiang Che anytime.

Xiong Jie’s physical state recovered instantly, and Jiang Che didn’t ask him to give back the Life Essence.

The vortex of clouds representing the dungeon disappeared. The weather cleared, golden sunlight fell on their faces; Jiang Che’s amber eyes sparkled.

A gentle breeze brushed across their faces, carrying the fresh scent of flowers.

Red Pearl Mental Hospital was built deep in the mountains—a place with so many benefits: secluded and cheap.

Suburban prices were always low; outside, tall forests soared. Looking out past the walls, all you saw were towering giants of trees.

The air here was nothing like the dungeon: the aroma of grass and trees was strong, especially after coming back from that place. One careless breath and the scent in the air could distract you.

He didn’t know how to thank Jiang Che; after a while, not a single word came out.

He really was a lunatic.

"Here, take this watch—it’s Uncle’s welcome gift." Without hesitation, he took off the dungeon tool watch he’d spent good money on, placing it into Jiang Che’s hand.

He didn’t know how to repay Jiang Che; the only thing worth giving was maybe just this watch.

He opened his mouth, and finally, only said, "After a while, Uncle will arrange a job for you."

He thought, this must be exactly what Jiang Che wanted to hear most right now.

Jiang Che hadn’t answered yet, when voices outside the mental hospital floated in.

"Jiang Che, Xiong Jie, where are you?"

The caller was precise, shouting their exact names.

"Over here!" Xiong Jie called out loudly. He knew it was some outsiders checking for survivors.

Lucky they got out fast. Lucky Red Pearl Mental Hospital was big enough; by the time they arrived, both he and Jiang Che were already out.

If not, if they searched the whole Red Pearl Mental Hospital and didn’t find Jiang Che or Xiong Jie—then suddenly they showed up out of nowhere—that’d be impossible to explain.

Xiong Jie was once again certain: the evil spirit truly considered Jiang Che.

"Whatever they ask you later, if it’s about the evil spirit, just say you don’t know."

"If you’re not sure, say you don’t know." Xiong Jie whispered, "Let me handle the rest of the questions."

Jiang Che nodded. He now knew his wife’s identity was special and couldn’t be exposed.

"Uncle, you’re the best." Jiang Che said seriously.

Xiong Jie heard the kid’s thanks. He wasn’t a child anymore, he could distinguish sincerity from falsehood in people’s eyes.

He could sense the earnestness in Jiang Che’s gaze; a warm current flashed in his heart.

Clearly, he was a traitor; keeping secrets was a duty. Why should he be thanked?

And most bewildering: Jiang Che didn’t use the fact that he’d given him Life Essence to demand favors or leverage.

He was at the age where he had no sons, but several younger relatives about the same age as Jiang Che.

Before the dungeon appeared, those kids only cared about money—how to scheme for more money, and the family inheritance.

After the dungeon came, those relatives connived even harder.

"It’s what I should do." Xiong Jie pulled Jiang Che behind him. "If they ask you something, speak then. Otherwise, don’t interrupt. If what I say is different from what you experienced, just say you don’t know."

Jiang Che’s ’mental illness’ status could solve a lot of unnecessary trouble.

Jiang Che watched the five people approaching along the shaded path and nodded.

"Hey, Boss Xiong! Didn’t expect you’d be the one to survive this round!" The newcomers’ voices arrived before they did.

"You have to tell us—how exactly did you make it out alive? All of us are dying to know."

"It’s not just us—everyone wants to know."

"First-clear for Dungeon 9, also called first-clear for an SSS dungeon."

"And you brought a mental patient out with you."
