Chapter 50: Chapter 50: You Said You’d Bring the Daughter-in-law, So Why Did You Bring the Lord?!
Ding Ning and Tuantuan were stunned for a moment, the same thought rising in both their hearts.
Blood Slaughter isn’t home today?
The Blood Slaughter Couple were killed?
No wonder the two of them thought this—Jiang Che dared to knock on the door so boldly, obviously because Blood Slaughter wasn’t home!
In fact, on the way over, Ding Ning already sensed something was off around here.
Normally, every area in the Dungeon is bloody and cruel, severed limbs and corpses everywhere, and the stench is so overwhelming that ordinary humans can’t bear it at all.
If corpses are left out too long, they turn into dried-up bodies, meaningless; prolonged exposure to sunlight and air causes blood and flesh to wither, and any foul odor long gone.
But the Dungeon’s temperature difference in white nights is enormous, days only get hotter, and even fresh corpses reek by the next day, showing differing degrees of rot.
Evil spirits need to harvest human fear, so they never clean up anything that makes humans involuntarily shudder in terror.
Walking along, she was already amazed—there was no smell in the area where Blood Slaughter resided, and not a single corpse was in sight.
This place was terrifyingly clean compared to other zones!
No bodies, no blood, no rot!
She glanced at Jiang Che’s clothes, then saw him knock on the door with zero hesitation.
The Blood Slaughter Couple might actually be dead!
Their old lair was now occupied by humans.
She met Tuantuan’s gaze; coming here, they had thought Jiang Che’s parents were ordinary humans, but now it was clear they were anything but ordinary.
Among the evil spirits in Dungeon No. 9, the Blood Slaughter Couple might not rank T0, but they were definitely T1 strength.
And now, they’d been dealt with so easily by humans.
Neither felt the need to worry for their own safety—this was their home turf, and humans were at a disadvantage here.
The only worry was that the upcoming family reunion might not be so harmonious. Even though the pair had disguised themselves as human women, whoever could deal with the Blood Slaughter Couple would easily recognize their true identities.
Sigh...
Ding Ning quickly slipped from Jiang Che’s arms, standing upright behind him, taking a fully defensive posture.
Seeing her cautious, frightened manner as she left his embrace made Jiang Che smile, "You’re so weak right now—my parents will understand."
He thought Ding Ning was just embarrassed, but when he recalled how much she’d suffered when she wasn’t by his side, and saw how fragile she looked now, he couldn’t help but ache for her.
Ding Ning could feel Jiang Che’s worry for her, and sighed helplessly.
She really wasn’t sure how to explain it to Jiang Che. Humans and evil spirits have always been sworn enemies.
Not every human is as pure-hearted as Jiang Che.
"Baby, no matter what happens next, nothing will change between us." Ding Ning, hearing footsteps inside, squeezed Jiang Che’s hand and spoke softly.
Tuantuan also stepped back with Ding Ning; the two might not retaliate, but they had to protect themselves.
Ding Ning sighed—she didn’t know how to explain to Jiang Che,
Baby, we’re just... different...
Before she could finish, the front door of the house opened.
Click—
The door lock began to turn, and Jiang Che excitedly called out, "Mom, Dad, I brought my wife and daughter home!"
Inside, Blood Slaughter and Blood Nurse exchanged glances, looking at each other.
They nodded in affirmation.
Both wore masks, covering most of their faces. Anyone who’s worn a mask knows that it never entirely hides you—contra TV dramas, the general features are still visible beneath a mask.
They had considered—should we disguise ourselves as humans? Pretend to be a happy family?
On second thought, they decided against it.
What they liked most about Jiang Che was his honesty; if they put on a disguise, the warmth would feel much too fake.
As for the so-called daughter-in-law and granddaughter, their thinking was simple—no matter how much those two might fear them, when the time comes, they’ll be sent away along with Jiang Che.
At least, while Jiang Che was here, they didn’t want to lie or deceive him.
So before Jiang Che returned, the two had agreed: only minimal covering, then gradually show goodwill to the two human women, eventually take off their disguises bit by bit.
If they’re still scared after all that, then honestly, there’s nothing else they can do.
They’d tidied up the bodies and such around the house, roughly cleaned out the bloodstains indoors.
They even prepared lots of human food.
This goodwill ought to be pretty obvious, right?
The lock turned, the door slowly opened a crack. All four—inside and outside—tensed, staring dead at that sliver of open door.
All around was dead silent, as if the entire Dungeon was holding its breath.
The door was slowly pushed open from inside, and light started to bridge the gap from outdoors to in.
"Finally home—come in and eat," Blood Slaughter spoke up before seeing who was outside, deciding someone had to break this silence.
As he opened the door, he nervously eyed the two women behind Jiang Che—one big, one small.
The pair were sizing him up as well.
...
...
Blood Slaughter stared at the older woman. Although Ding Ning had disguised herself as a human, the aura of Dungeon No. 9’s Lord was unmistakable—not something a human could detect, but he absolutely wouldn’t miss it!
As for the little girl behind Ding Ning, her aura was even more obvious.
Ding Ning too was studying Blood Slaughter, as well as the Blood Nurse standing beside him.
Both wore hats and masks, hiding their terrifying features.
"You..."
Blood Slaughter opened his mouth, lost for words, "You..."
He raised his hand, then let it drop, his eyes filled with bewilderment.
Weren’t you supposed to be bringing your daughter-in-law and child home?
He looked at Jiang Che in confusion. Daughter-in-law, yeah? Then why did you bring the Lord home, what nonsense is this!
He realized he hadn’t just missed out on Jiang Che’s upbringing, but somehow missed these bizarre past two days of his son’s life as well.
Ah! He was practically going insane!
What the hell happened in this whole process!
Nobody moved—a standoff, eight eyes all full of confusion.
"Mom? Dad? Wife?" Jiang Che looked at both sides in confusion—why had everyone suddenly frozen?
"Mom, Dad, did you catch a cold? Why are you still wearing masks?" Jiang Che looked at the Blood Slaughter Couple, baffled.
"Huh?? Oh, oh." Blood Slaughter yanked off his mask and hat. "Dad isn’t good-looking; didn’t want to scare the daughter-in-law."
"Seeing she’s not afraid, I can rest easy." Blood Slaughter pointed at his own face—a mask of stitched-together, fractured skull, the wide open mouth full of razor-sharp teeth, looking anything but kind or friendly.
Jiang Che turned his face aside, wiping away the tears that had welled up in his eyes.
He felt his father’s cautious care and sensed the old man’s love for his wife and child, extending even to them.
"Mom, Dad, it’s our first meeting. I’m sorry I didn’t bring the child to visit all these years—sorry it took so long," Ding Ning said, smiling politely behind Jiang Che.
Blood Slaughter’s red eyes grew wide.
Huh? What did she just call me?
