Chapter 45: Chapter 45: So... So Light!
She was thinking, if Jiang Che’s parents were really hiding in the Blood Slaughter Couple’s territory, should she adjust the distance between Jiang Che and the destination—just enough that he could never reach it? Then, after three days, she could send Jiang Che out.
Tuantuan also frowned. The Blood Slaughter Couple were not like her; the two of them took pleasure in killing.
She let out a sigh. She should have guessed sooner—Jiang Che’s white coat could conceal a human’s presence; most likely, he’d stumbled upon it near the Blood Slaughter Couple and put it on by chance.
"Are Grandpa and Grandma wearing the same as you?" Tuantuan tugged Jiang Che’s clothes, asking innocently.
"Dad, you’re wearing a white coat. Are you a doctor? Are Grandpa and Grandma doctors too?" She sensed Ding Ning’s gaze, watching as she kept probing Jiang Che indirectly.
If Jiang Che’s parents also had items that could hide their presence, there would still be a chance they were alive.
"I’m not a doctor..." Jiang Che scratched the back of his head, not knowing how to explain.
"But yeah, Mom and Dad are dressed basically the same." He remembered the Blood Nurse’s uniform—the one he was wearing wasn’t much different. You could almost call them matching family outfits.
As soon as Jiang Che finished speaking, he sensed the two people next to him suddenly let out a breath.
"Don’t be nervous! An ugly daughter-in-law has to meet her in-laws sooner or later." He thought Ding Ning was feeling nervous.
"Who are you calling ugly?!" Ding Ning shot him a blank, dazed glare. She was worried about his parents—couldn’t this idiot see that?!
This idiot honestly lets his guard down around people! Doesn’t he know this place is dangerous?
Tuantuan was always reading Jiang Che’s mind. What she found in his memory was—
All along the way, Jiang Che was sighing; the memories flashed past his mind in fragments, constantly replaying the circumstances of his life in recent years.
Blood tests, examinations, regular physicals, strange things happening to his body—at that place called Red Pearl Mental Hospital, there were so many people like Jiang Che.
In Jiang Che’s memories, the nurses would always say strange things,
"You’re healthy—your heart, liver, kidneys are all great."
"The genetic match is a success. Remember to eat well three meals a day; now you have a sponsor."
"I really envy these mental patients; living carefree until the day they die..."
Some mental patients disappeared and were never seen again. Inside the hospital, the explanation was always: "He’s cured; he was discharged."
...
There were simply too many words like these—enough to make Tuantuan’s eyes sting and tear up.
For a moment, she couldn’t even tell anymore—were those things outside the dungeon also just evil spirits?
As she read Jiang Che’s memories, Tuantuan willingly opened these memories up to Ding Ning, too.
Jiang Che could only connect with one person, but as the skill holder, she could connect to far more.
But usually, she disdained connecting to humans—to read their filth-filled thoughts. After all, they were nothing but prey doomed to die sooner or later. What did it matter what a prey was thinking at the end?
With Ding Ning’s permission, she and Ding Ning formed a mind-link, sharing her thoughts.
Ding Ning silently followed Jiang Che, watching those scenes inside the mental hospital play before her eyes.
The more she saw, the more she understood.
It looked like a mental hospital, but in truth, it was an organ donor center.
"Don’t worry. This time, besides you and your family, no one else is getting out," Ding Ning said, gripping his hand. Human bones were so fragile—she felt like if she squeezed even a little, they’d shatter.
"Get out? Out to where?" Jiang Che looked at her in confusion.
The question left Ding Ning at a loss, because from the thoughts she’d read, Jiang Che really didn’t want to leave. All he wanted was to be with family.
Tuantuan, watching Ding Ning get stumped, couldn’t help but purse her lips and snicker.
She never imagined that the mighty Lord of Dungeon No. 9 would ever fuss over coaxing a human to leave the dungeon.
"Every family I’ve seen, as the head of the household, you need to go out and earn money to support everyone, don’t you?!" Ding Ning recalled her knowledge of human ways. "Even though you can’t bear to part from your wife and daughter, you have to go!"
Jiang Che froze, opening his mouth but saying nothing—because he found her words made sense.
He needed to be a responsible husband, a dutiful son, a caring father.
That meant he couldn’t just stay at home forever.
He needed to go out and fight for his family.
Even if he’d just reunited with them, and didn’t want to part again.
"I understand." Jiang Che nodded. "I won’t let you suffer with me."
He looked at Tuantuan, clutching her little teddy bear, and at Ding Ning, pinning the Sapphire Brooch to her chest.
This was the first gift he’d ever given his family; he really didn’t have the money for a second one.
He lowered his head, full of regret—not much of a family’s pillar, after all.
Ding Ning sensed the emotion spilling off Jiang Che, glanced at Tuantuan. The latter simply spread her hands helplessly. "Dad’s always like this..." she said.
Ding Ning felt those pure, untainted emotions—absolutely without any impurities.
She wasn’t some ordinary Little Evil Spirit. No human emotion could escape her perception; even the smallest flicker, she could catch anyone’s emotional weakness in a fraction of a second.
The man before her, his whole heart was honest—and now, filled to the brim with resolve. He really wanted to win a world for her and Tuantuan!
She was half moved, half amused, reading his thoughts.
Such a feeble human—she could kill him with a finger.
Yet his desire to protect her was more steadfast than ever.
"Yay! Dad is Tuantuan’s big hero!" Tuantuan threw her arms around Jiang Che’s leg, her big eyes sparkling.
What she wanted was never some strongman—it was always Jiang Che’s presence.
Jiang Che picked her up with one arm, holding her, while his other hand reached out for Ding Ning.
Feeling Tuantuan’s weight, a wave of regretful thoughts kept sweeping through his heart,
"My daughter’s too light—she weighs almost nothing..."
"She must have suffered so much, right?"
"It’s all my fault..."
...
Ding Ning pressed her forehead with one hand, sending a thought to Tuantuan: "Why don’t you adjust your weight a little, make yourself heavier?"
Tuantuan blinked, then looked at Ding Ning and replied, "Nope! Silly Dad’s cute too!"
"Daddy, why don’t you carry Mommy for a bit?" Tuantuan’s Little Demon voice called out from Jiang Che’s arms. "Tuantuan can walk herself!"
Jiang Che stopped walking, his gaze landing on Ding Ning’s frail, skinny form. "Sorry, Tuantuan, for putting you down."
With that, he set Tuantuan down and scooped Ding Ning up into a bridal carry.
So light!
That was Jiang Che’s first thought. When they’d hurried along earlier, he’d noticed she was light, but hadn’t really paid attention to it.
Now that he was relaxed, he was suddenly aware of her weight.
This grown woman—she was as light as Tuantuan!
"It really is my fault... They’ve been suffering because of me..."
"It won’t be like this anymore..."
...
Ding Ning and Tuantuan listened to Jiang Che’s thoughts at the same time.
Ding Ning kept her head down, purposely not making herself heavier.
Tuantuan was right, she thought. Sometimes silly is cute too.
Besides—
If she made herself heavier, she’d probably squash this scrawny body to death.
She didn’t want him to baby her—she just didn’t want him to get tired!
