Chapter 149: Chapter 149: We Have This Too

Jiang Che and Ding Ning didn’t linger for long. After one last embrace, Ding Ning stood at the entrance of the passage, waving farewell to them.

Tuantuan and Hua stood behind her, quietly watching as Jiang Che’s group of four walked toward the passage.

Zhou Ang was staring at a teardrop-shaped purple Life Crystal in his palm.

He kept staring, and, not paying attention, accidentally stepped on the heel of Jiang Che’s shoe, knocking it off.

"What are you looking at?" Jiang Che noticed his distraction and asked, puzzled.

"Before we left, Sister Hua gave me a Life Crystal. She said if I’m ever seriously injured, as long as I have a single breath left, I can recover." Zhou Ang’s voice was very soft. He played with the tiny crystal between his fingers, then frantically patted his pockets, finally clutching it in his hand, afraid of losing it.

Flying Tiger stood beside him. She had seen Hua hand him the crystal just a moment ago.

She’d also heard the effect explained.

Dungeon items were extremely rare.

For a Survivor to obtain a dungeon item—who among them hasn’t danced with death?

Either you find such things in a wraith’s lair, or you kill a wraith and loot the item...

No matter which way, it’s like walking a tightrope over an abyss.

But now, she’d witnessed Zhou Ang get a dungeon item without suffering a single loss.

Of course, she didn’t consider the way Hua had spun Zhou Ang around by the arm to be harmful; after meeting and coming to understand these wraiths, she was starting to feel that such things were just their way of playing.

She’d heard him explain the item’s function—even if it was only a one-use thing, it was practically legendary.

Hua had said that any human below Tier Fourteen who used the Life Essence would have their injuries healed.

The effect was limited by tier, but below Tier Fourteen, it was invincible.

How is that any different from having no limit at all?

These days, how many human Survivors are even Tier Fourteen and above?

Flying Tiger kept silent; she thought the human guidebooks for wraith dungeons should add another section.

Dungeon item acquisition method: have a wraith give it to you.

If even Zhou Ang got something like this, then what about Jiang Che? Did he have even more?

Unconsciously, Flying Tiger looked at Jiang Che. Before, she thought Jiang Che just seemed a bit slow, only ever repeating that he already had a wife.

But now, she just thought all of that was true and steadfast love.

"Oh, you mean that?" Jiang Che just glanced back, "We all got one of those. Uncle Xiong has one too."

Zhou Ang quickly looked at Xiong Jie, who nodded in confirmation.

He really did have one as well.

"Alright..." Zhou Ang lowered his head, disappointed. He’d thought Sister Hua had given him a special gift, never expecting everyone got the same thing.

Jiang Che stood at the exit of that black halo. Finally, he turned to look toward where Ding Ning stood.

Walking through the passage, it had felt like he’d only taken a few steps.

But now, standing at the exit looking back, the long passage stretched out in midair. The exit was so far away he couldn’t see its end, nor could he see Ding Ning at the far side anymore.

Jiang Che looked gloomily at the exit, and the others lined up obediently behind him.

Everyone knew Jiang Che had to be the first one out, and as for the rest of them, they were just lucky to hitch a ride on his dungeon clear.

Jiang Che didn’t let them go first either. In other areas, he could be generous, but on the road to getting stronger, he’d never yield.

He had reasons why he must grow stronger.

Stepping out of the passage, Jiang Che felt the light outside grow a little dimmer.

Is it night already outside?

When they entered, it was the middle of the day, but he wasn’t sure how much time they spent inside the dungeon.

Jiang Che rubbed his eyes; he’d finally come out from the dungeon.

Looking at the weeds and giant trees nearby, he felt like he was in a dark forest.

Looking up at the sky, the thick tree trunks blocked the sunlight, with only faint rays filtering through the gaps in the leaves.

The weak light wasn’t strong, filtered down by layer upon layer of fallen leaves, and what reached Jiang Che was just a thin veil of light.

One by one, Zhou Ang and the others appeared nearby. The first thing Flying Tiger did was check her own strength.

Tier Two Peak!

She felt the power in herself now and couldn’t help breathing more quickly.

This was the starting level she’d always dreamt of!

She’d never dared hope to be like Jiang Che and get a first clear, or survive an SSS-level dungeon. That was something she could never have imagined.

When she turned in excitement to look at her teammates, she realized Jiang Che and the others had heavy expressions, not a word spoken.

"What’s wrong?" she asked Jiang Che in confusion.

Jiang Che looked back at her. Sure enough, Flying Tiger and Zhou Ang had gone from ordinary people with no tier to Survivors at Tier Two Peak.

Uncle Xiong’s level had also gone up.

Which meant they’d all successfully made it out of the dungeon.

"This forest... something’s not right..." Jiang Che glanced around at the trees. The ground was covered in thick, decaying leaves; every step he took made a brittle crunching sound.

The rot of these fallen leaves didn’t have the fresh earthy scent of plants, but instead reeked of rotten corpses.

"Forest?" Flying Tiger looked around. She’d thought they’d exit near the original entrance, not expecting the exit and entrance to be completely different places.

There wasn’t a soul in sight. The entrance had once been packed with a long line, but now there wasn’t a single person.

"It’s probably because we went to another dungeon, so our exit point got changed." Flying Tiger immediately guessed a possible reason.

She didn’t give the forest itself much thought.

Jiang Che frowned, and Zhou Ang’s face looked a little grim as well.

Flying Tiger had gone straight into the dungeon, but their group had crossed through the Dark Forest with Hua. They knew just how strange and bizarre that Dark Forest could be.

Jiang Che stared at the twisted, ferocious human faces on the tree trunks and stepped back instinctively.

Suddenly, he stepped on something sharp beneath his foot.

With the tip of his shoe, he brushed aside the rotting leaves and saw an ivory-white sign.

He bent down to pick it up, brushing off the wet, rotting leaves stuck to it.

After giving it a light pat, he saw the words written on it.

"Entrance to SSS-level Dungeon Six-Star Pond. Please line up in an orderly fashion," Jiang Che read aloud from the sign, picking it up and setting it beside him.

Flying Tiger’s face darkened, because the sign bore the Flying Tiger Group’s logo.

This was the sign they’d set out at the entrance to maintain order.

"Is this where we first entered the dungeon?"

"The Dark Forest!" Zhou Ang’s voice sounded heavy.

Jiang Che nodded in recognition. "It’s the Dark Forest..."

All around on the tree trunks were twisted, fierce human faces. The white sign beside Jiang Che looked out of place here.

Jiang Che reached out and touched a tree with a human face twisted into its bark. The tip of his finger felt rough.

He wasn’t afraid these trees would do him harm—Hua had said, wraiths ranked A-level and above could all roam the Dark Forest at will, so he didn’t need to fear the Dark Forest.

He pinched at the bark over the human face, the dry wood making a cracking sound.

With a gentle pull, a layer of bark came off in his hand.

It felt strange—soft.

Jiang Che looked at the thing in his hand: what had been a bit of bark was now a patch of cheek skin, still sticky with thick flesh and blood.

He didn’t do anything else. Those rows of trees seemed to be the people who had once lined up here.
