Chapter 68: Chapter 68: Cornered in the Restroom

The professor’s wife was stunned and embarrassed by Shane Grant’s words.

She sized them up again and again, speaking in disbelief.

"Are you sure both of these children are yours? Then what about the test report..."

Shane Grant had absolutely no faith in some so-called "pay-to-play" lab, and he said coldly,

"You think just because a piece of paper has your husband’s name on it, the results are authoritative? Who knows who might be after Mr. Kane’s position, looking to take him down but lacking a good excuse, so they came up with this dirty trick."

"Someone is trying to harm your husband, and instead of helping him stay vigilant, you let yourself be used as their weapon. How interesting."

The professor’s wife: "..."

Shane Grant looked at Director Hill and continued.

"Director Hill, please do me a favor and see which lab issued this report, then call the police immediately. Making a joke out of something like a genetic test... I’d say they’re tired of being in business."

"Professor Kane, no need to thank me. As for who is trying to harm you, we’ll find out as soon as we file a police report."

Murmurs immediately rippled through the crowd again.

"Mr. Kane has been an upright gentleman his whole life. I knew he wouldn’t do something like this. And his wife... honestly. Who goes out of their way to publicly drag their own husband’s name through the mud?"

Realization dawned on the professor’s wife, and she was overcome with shame and indignation. She covered her face, crying as she ran from the crowd.

They had been husband and wife for half a lifetime, after all. Professor Kane knew she was simple-minded and thus easily manipulated. Afraid she might do something rash when she got home, he prepared to follow her.

"Cecelia, once my wife has calmed down, I will bring her to apologize to you in person. You’ve been wronged today. I’m sorry, Hill, I have to go."

Director Hill turned to see that a large crowd of onlookers had gathered. With a cold expression, he told everyone to disperse.

With Professor Kane absent, the meeting for the day was temporarily canceled, and he led the others to his office.

Only then did Shane Grant put the two children down and reach out to lift Cecelia Archer’s chin.

"Why are you so foolish? Didn’t you even know to dodge? Look at you, she really got you. Does it hurt?" fɾeewebnoveℓ.co๓

Cecelia Archer’s skin was very fair, and the professor’s wife hadn’t held back. After several slaps, her cheeks were bright red, the finger marks clearly visible. Shane Grant’s heartache was written all over his face.

To be honest, it did hurt. It stung badly.

But Cecelia wasn’t used to being looked at like that or cared for in such a tone, so she quickly turned her face away.

"I’m fine. It doesn’t hurt."

"Of course it hurts. I’ll get a doctor to take a look at you!"

As he spoke, Shane Grant was about to go out and call for a doctor, but Cecelia quickly grabbed him.

"I’m not that delicate. The professor’s wife is frail; she’s not as strong as you think. It really doesn’t hurt. Back when I was a student, Professor Kane and his wife were very good to me. Today, she just lost her head in a fit of anger. It’s okay."

’She’s defending them, even now?’

Shane Grant was exasperated with her.

"She came here, hit you, and cursed you in public, and you’re still defending her? You..."

The crowd dispersed, leaving only Damien Vaughn standing at the door of the hospital room.

He had seen Cecelia’s awkward predicament, and he had seen her bright red cheeks, but he had no standing to step forward.

Now, watching Shane Grant care for her so naturally, as if no one else existed, and seeing Cecelia respond with a shy expression, he felt like an idiot all over again.

’Shane Grant called her his wife and even claimed her daughter as his own. What the hell am I even doing here?’

His face darkened. He turned to leave, but Candy ran over and hugged him.

"Uncle!"

Damien Vaughn looked down. Thankfully, Candy’s face was clean, with no signs of having been hit.

"Uncle kept his promise from yesterday and came to see you. You weren’t hit, were you?"

"No." Candy shook her head and tried to climb his leg. Damien Vaughn picked her up.

"Good. You be a good girl and stay here. Uncle will come see you again in a couple of days."

After what had just happened, Candy was filled with worry for Cecelia’s safety.

She wrapped her arms around his neck and said pitifully, "I don’t want you to go. Can you please stay? I’m so scared that after you all leave, bad people will come and bother Mommy again. My mommy is always getting into trouble because of people... I must be a jinx."

Damien Vaughn hadn’t expected her to say such a thing about herself. His heart ached as he chided her.

"Nonsense. Who taught you to say that? Don’t ever say that about yourself again! There aren’t that many bad people in the world, don’t worry. And even if there are, Uncle will chase them all away. You just focus on getting better and don’t overthink things."

"Really? Uncle will chase all the bad people away?"

"Of course. When have I ever lied to you?"

Candy finally broke into a smile, her beautiful big eyes twinkling.

"I’m so lucky to have a great uncle like you. You can go to work now, but before you leave, can you do me a favor?"

She pulled five yuan from her pocket. "Annie has been working so hard keeping me company. I want to buy her some candy. Uncle, can you take me to buy some?"

Watching Damien Vaughn walk away holding Candy, Claire Clark was so angry she could feel smoke coming out of her ears.

’I planned to use a fake DNA test to humiliate Cecelia Archer in front of Damien Vaughn, Shane Grant, and a crowd of influential people, but who knew...’

’This is unbelievable! I’ve never in my life seen a man as hopelessly in love as Shane Grant!’

’He’s such a great catch—so handsome, and all he comes with is a son, right? Yet he’s completely devoted to Cecelia Archer! Even claiming her daughter as his own!’

’It seems the dirt I dug up wasn’t explosive enough. Shane Grant doesn’t know enough about her. Otherwise, I refuse to believe he would still like her!’

’And Damien Vaughn!’

’The woman basically announced in front of everyone that her daughter was fathered by another man, and he’s still all mushy with the little girl!’

’If he wants to have kids that badly, he should come find me, Claire Clark! I’d have eight or ten with him!’

After comforting Cecelia and the children, Shane Grant left the room for a while to personally investigate the matter of the test report.

The professor’s wife had accidentally scratched the skin behind Cecelia’s ear, and it was bleeding a little. She wanted to get a bandage from a nurse, so she went to the nurses’ station.

But just as she rounded the corner, she saw a familiar figure standing in front of the nurses’ station counter.

"Claire Clark?"

Even though the woman was wearing a white coat and was turned sideways to her, a person’s posture and manner of speaking don’t change easily. Cecelia recognized her in an instant!

Hearing Cecelia call her name, Claire Clark’s face stiffened, and she quickly turned her body away.

’If Cecelia finds out I work at this hospital, it will be much harder to make a move in the future.’

She grabbed a mask from her pocket, put it on, and then bolted. Cecelia chased after her.

’No wonder the rumor about her and Mr. Kane spread today!’

’If it wasn’t someone they both knew, someone who knew they once had a teacher-student relationship, how could the rumor have gotten so outrageous?’

’So Claire Clark is at this hospital!’

Without needing any proof, Cecelia’s intuition alone was enough to tell her that this was Claire Clark’s doing. She quickened her pace, chasing her into the women’s restroom.

Claire Clark, fleeing in a panic, had thought that Cecelia wouldn’t dare follow her into the restroom, but she hadn’t counted on Cecelia being so relentless.

Not only did she follow her in, but she stood blocking the stall door, waiting for her.

"What guilty thing did you do that makes you run the second you see me?"

"Long time no see. I simply must catch up with you today. Claire Clark, if you have the guts, you can stay in there for the rest of your life!"
