Chapter 65: Chapter 65: Pah! How Is She Worthy
The same resolute, cold expression he wore when he sent her away yesterday.
Damien Vaughn’s face was grim. Without sparing Claire Clark a single glance, he walked straight past her.
"Damien! Damien?"
Watching him ignore her completely and walk further away, Claire Clark grew pale with anger.
The young nurses, however, were staring at her in surprise.
"Dr. Clark, you know him? Why is he ignoring you? Do you think he didn’t hear? Who is that? You know such a handsome man, Dr. Clark. You’re amazing!"
’Amazing?’ Claire Clark was fuming.
’What in the world happened to make him so cold toward me?’
’Back in the day, he used to spoil me rotten!’
Just as she was seething, the nurses’ gazes shifted. They spotted the director leading a group of people over and quickly straightened up to greet them.
"Good day, Director Hill. Good day, everyone."
Claire Clark quickly turned and called out to Director Hill as well. At the same time, she was pleasantly surprised to spot her former university professor, Mr. Kane, in the group.
Mr. Kane, now in his early forties, was already a renowned oncologist in the country.
Extremely handsome and talented in his youth, he had been very popular at the medical school.
Claire Clark had been infatuated with him back then, but unfortunately, Mr. Kane had been indifferent to her, reserving his special attention exclusively for Cecelia Archer.
He even publicly expressed his regret when Cecelia Archer faced expulsion due to scandals about being pregnant and stealing.
’He isn’t on staff at Central Hospital. What’s he doing here?’
"Mr. Kane, long time no see! What brings you here today?"
Mr. Kane didn’t recognize Claire at first, but he still answered politely.
"I’m here for a meeting. And you are?"
"I’m Claire Clark! I was your student, from the same class as Raymond King and Cecelia Archer. Don’t you remember?"
’Cecelia Archer?’
Mr. Kane remembered then. There had been someone named Claire Clark who was always trailing after Cecelia Archer back in the day.
"Oh, it’s you. Long time no see. I didn’t recognize you for a moment. You work here now?"
Claire knew that in this profession, the more influential people you knew, the more respect you commanded, so she did her best to engage her former professor in conversation.
"Yes, I just returned from abroad not long ago. Thanks to Director Hill, my position is already permanent. It’s so good to see you, Mr. Kane. Our old classmates miss you a lot. Just the other day, they were talking about organizing a group visit."
Although Mr. Kane was over forty, he had maintained his physique and appearance well. He had the refined, elegant air of a scholar, reminiscent of one of those actors who always plays the domineering CEO.
Claire was proud to have such a professor, but unfortunately, Mr. Kane’s reaction was lukewarm.
"I’ve been very busy lately and can’t spare the time. Please tell our classmates for me that I appreciate the thought."
"It’s about time. You should get back to your duties. I have to go."
With that, the group continued on their way. ’I finally get to see him again after so long; how can I not get his contact info?’ Claire thought, taking two steps to catch up.
"Everyone is very fond of your wife, too. If you’re too busy, we could visit her instead. Mr. Kane, you’re here today to..."
Director Hill answered on Mr. Kane’s behalf.
"There’s a leukemia patient whose treatment plan needs to be developed. Your Mr. Kane really doesn’t have the time. Alright now, all of you get back to work. The best way to repay your teacher is to give your all to your own jobs."
With that, the group of specialists headed toward the conference room on that floor.
Claire returned to the nurses’ station and overheard the young nurses talking.
"They must be here to discuss the case of that little girl who was admitted yesterday. Even though she has leukemia at such a young age, she’s still so lucky. She has that handsome father, and now another gorgeous man has brought all these specialists to work on her treatment plan. I’m sure she’ll get better."
"I wonder which prominent family she belongs to. To be born into a family like that... honestly, I’d be willing to get sick if it meant having that life."
The words were spoken idly, but they struck a chord with Claire. A raging fire of jealousy instantly ignited in her heart again. ƒreewebɳovel.com
’They’re here to work on a treatment plan for Cecelia Archer’s daughter? Pah!’
’What gives her the right? She’s dragging around two bastards, yet she managed to latch onto that handsome man, mess around with Damien Vaughn on the side, and now she even has Director Hill personally leading a team to treat her daughter?!’
’And Mr. Kane!’
’He liked her so much back in school. Now that he knows her child is sick, won’t he feel even more tenderly toward her?’
’What if they get back in touch, and he throws all his energy into saving her daughter...’
’Get back in touch?’
A flash of inspiration struck. Claire suddenly had a brilliant idea.
She returned to her office and called her old classmate from the day before.
"Are the results in?"
"Jeez, you’re nagging me to death. I was up all night personally running the tests. I just got the results."
"So, who is this test for, anyway? Tell me, I want in on the gossip. If the man sees these results, all hell is going to break loose!"
"The son isn’t biologically related to him, or to the woman. The girl, however, is their biological child. What’s the deal with that?"
"Don’t tell me the woman couldn’t produce a son, and she was afraid the man would look down on her, so she stole or bought a boy to pass them off as fraternal twins? I’ll mail the results to you now. You have to promise to tell me what happens next! I’m dying of curiosity."
Claire was taken aback, but at the same time, she breathed a sigh of relief.
’No wonder I thought the boy didn’t look like Cecelia Archer or have anything to do with Damien Vaughn. It turns out he isn’t their child at all.’
’Could he be that other handsome man’s son?’
’That would make sense.’
’Why would such a handsome, capable man fall for a single mother like Cecelia Archer? It must be because he’s also divorced with a kid.’
’So Cecelia Archer only ever gave Damien Vaughn a daughter—and a sick one at that.’
"Don’t mail the results to me. I’ll give you an address. Send them there. Use a same-day city courier. I’ll transfer you the money."
After hanging up, Claire sent her classmate an address.
Her classmate was shocked. "Isn’t this Mr. Kane’s home address? But..."
"His wife came to me yesterday and asked me to handle this for her discreetly. You must not tell anyone. Take this ten thousand yuan for your trouble. And delete our chat history immediately."
Candy’s spirits were much better today. She didn’t need any shots or an IV, and she and Annie were quietly playing with building blocks in the hospital room.
With nothing else to do, Cecelia Archer sat beside them with a book.
The peaceful moment was shattered when the door to the room was suddenly thrown open and a woman burst in, yelling.
"Where is that shameless woman? Show yourself! I want to see what kind of shameless hussy is desperate enough to have a baby for an old man! Where is she?"
Two nurses followed behind her, pleading with her to lower her voice. This was a hospital, and patients needed quiet.
"A hospital? More like a place to cover up their sordid affairs! Only Silas Kane would be shameless enough to stash his mistress here!"
"To think I devoted my whole life to him, was completely loyal, and this is how he repays me? I swear I won’t rest until I drag this despicable pair out into the open for everyone to see! Show yourselves!"
The woman stormed around the room before her eyes landed on the sofa area, where she saw Cecelia Archer with the children.
