Chapter 59: Chapter 59: Candy is Damien Vaughn’s Daughter?
It was the first time in his life Damien Vaughn had ever donated blood. He brazenly wanted to give 1000cc, but the nurse didn’t dare draw that much, so he ended up giving only 600cc.
Pressing a cotton swab to his arm, he walked out irritably. He never expected that the moment he looked up, he would see Cecelia Archer leaning on Shane Grant’s shoulder, being gently comforted by him.
’He suddenly felt so stupid, so completely unnecessary!’
’Candy wasn’t the helpless, lonely child he had imagined. She had a capable mother—a mother who could find her a powerful man to be her stepfather. And here he was, trying to curry favor? How pathetic was that?’
He had never felt so redundant, so utterly humiliated. Tossing the cotton swab into a trash can, Damien Vaughn turned on his heel and strode away.
"Something came up. I’m leaving."
Cecelia was deeply moved and grateful that he had brought Candy to the hospital and even donated blood for her.
At the same time, she wanted to ask Damien Vaughn a few questions, so she quickly pulled away from Shane Grant and stood up.
"Excuse me. Thank you for everything today. Let me see you out."
Looking at her pale, beautiful face, anyone who didn’t know better would think she was a gentle, innocent woman. Unfortunately for her, Damien Vaughn now saw right through her.
Putting on an act for him right in front of Shane Grant... She wasn’t just ridiculous anymore; she was despicable.
"Don’t bother. We’re not close."
Giving Cecelia Archer a cold glance, he strode out of the hospital.
The nurse administered the blood transfusion to Candy. Her wound was stitched, and the family was allowed to see her.
Cecelia Archer leaned over the bedside, stroking her daughter’s messy hair.
"Does it hurt? Don’t be scared, Candy. You’ll be better soon. Mommy will stay right here with you. If it hurts, you tell me, okay?"
Candy’s face was flushed, and she was struggling to breathe. Her speech was slurred, and she looked at her mother with a dazed expression.
"It hurts, Mommy. My head hurts so much... I want to throw up. I feel so sick..."
’How could this be happening?’
Shane Grant quickly brought over the trash can while Cecelia Archer helped Candy sit up slowly.
"Go ahead and get it out. After you’re done, tell Mommy if anything else feels wrong."
Candy retched in agony for a while. After Cecelia helped her rinse her mouth and was about to help her lie back down, Candy spoke again, her face contorted in pain.
"My legs are so numb I can’t lie down, and my back hurts too... I feel so awful, Mommy. Am I going to die?"
’Headache, nausea, and vomiting? Now her legs were numb, and her back was starting to hurt?’ ƒree𝑤ebnσvel.com
Cecelia’s sharp mind immediately recalled the clinical phenomenon of a hemolytic reaction.
’Could this be...’
’If this really is a hemolytic reaction, it will start damaging her internal organs. She could die.’
Cecelia Archer frantically pulled the transfusion needle from her daughter’s arm and screamed for a doctor.
Candy was rushed back into the emergency room.
Shane Grant had no idea what was happening. Assuming the doctor’s incompetence was making the child’s condition worse, he said to Cecelia Archer with a grim expression,
"Let’s transfer her. I’m good friends with the director of Central Hospital. He’ll make sure Candy gets the best possible treatment. I’ll call him right now and arrange it."
Cecelia Archer’s head was spinning.
’There are many causes for a hemolytic reaction, but one of them involves a child’s blood and that of their biological parent...’
’Did Candy really receive Damien Vaughn’s blood? How could this have happened?’
Cecelia Archer couldn’t help but think back to that ridiculous night four years ago.
’No, no, no, it couldn’t be Damien Vaughn.’
’The man who forced himself on her that night had a strong medicinal odor about him. She’d heard he was seriously ill; she was only there to deliver his medicine when...’
’Damien Vaughn is strong and healthy, the distinguished president of the Vaughn Group. Besides, he has Claire Clark. How could he possibly do something like that? It must be some other reason!’
All these years, Cecelia Archer had raised her daughter alone, enduring countless hardships. Her daughter was her life, her everything.
She couldn’t dare, nor would she allow herself to imagine, some man suddenly showing up, claiming to be Candy’s biological father, and trying to take a part of her away.
’It absolutely couldn’t be for that reason.’
Soon, Central Hospital sent an ambulance with a medical team.
After another round of emergency treatment, Candy was moved to the ambulance.
Without a word, Shane Grant grabbed Cecelia’s hand to get in the ambulance with her, but she hesitated.
"No matter what, the doctors here saved Candy’s life. I need to thank them. You get in first; I’ll go say a quick word of thanks."
She ran to the attending physician and stuffed all the cash she had on her into his hands.
"Thank you so much for treating my daughter. If the man who donated the blood asks about this later, just tell him we were unhappy with the facilities here and transferred her. Please, don’t mention the hemolytic reaction. I’m begging you."
’What does she mean, "the man who donated the blood"?’
’This woman was fascinating. It was the first time in his life he’d ever heard someone refer to President Vaughn like that!’
’No, wait!’
’Don’t mention the hemolytic reaction? What did that mean?’ ƒree𝑤ebnσvel.com
There were many possible causes for a hemolytic reaction. During the emergency procedure, he had guessed it might be an issue with the child’s own red blood cells. But seeing the mother’s reaction now, he thought of *that* other possibility.
’The reaction occurred right after the transfusion with President Vaughn’s blood. Could President Vaughn actually be the child’s biological father?’
’Holy crap! Isn’t being President Vaughn’s daughter the chance of a lifetime? So what gives?’
He glanced at Shane Grant in the ambulance and understood.
’She had probably been with President Vaughn before, then married her current husband while pregnant with Vaughn’s child.’
’The husband looked like a respectable man, too. She must be terrified of him finding out.’
’What a bizarre, scandalous affair. This was some seriously juicy gossip!’
But this was gossip the doctor didn’t dare touch.
Every employee at the Vaughn Group had heard about President Vaughn’s temper and his incredibly high standards at work.
’His own biological daughter had nearly died on my watch today. If I went and confessed that to the man, wouldn’t that be a death wish?’
Even without Cecelia Archer telling him, he had no intention of saying a word.
"Yes, yes, I understand. Saving her is the priority. You should go now."
Seeing him take the money and agree so readily, Cecelia Archer finally boarded the ambulance, relieved.
Once at Central Hospital, Candy was rushed into the emergency room again.
The hospital director came personally to greet Shane Grant, and the two of them exchanged pleasantries to the side while Cecelia Archer waited anxiously outside the emergency room with Annie.
At the nurses’ station, a few young nurses were huddled together, whispering.
"Who’s the director talking to? Look, that guy over there is so handsome."
"He is! And so tall, with such sharp features. When he walked past me a minute ago, I almost thought he was some movie star. He’s ridiculously handsome!"
"You two can stop drooling. He already has a wife and kid. I just heard the child call him ’Dad,’ so that woman must be his wife. And they do make a good-looking couple. Just admire from afar."
"Sigh, my heart is broken. Why do all the premium guys get married so young? Can’t they stay single for a few more years and give the rest of us a chance...?"
As they were gossiping, Claire Clark walked past and shot them a look.
"Shouldn’t you be working? What are you all whispering about?"
The nurses quickly pulled her into the gossip.
"Dr. Clark, look, isn’t that guy over there handsome? Too bad he’s already taken. He has a wife and kid, so all we can do is look. Sigh."
