Chapter 58: Chapter 58: Uncle, Candy Doesn’t Want to Die

"Ah! Candy, what happened to you?"

Cecelia Archer had just brought the two children back to the courtyard. She asked a waiter for another serving of non-spicy beef, as Annie was still complaining that her mouth was on fire. Cecelia then asked the waiter for two bottles of milk to help the kids with the spiciness.

She had only been gone for a moment. When she came back outside, Candy had hit her forehead on the edge of a stone step. She was drenched in blood from her face to her clothes—a terrifying, blood-soaked figure.

Cecelia Archer screamed and nearly fainted.

Hearing the scream, Shane Grant, Damien Vaughn, and Uncle Lee rushed out from inside the room.

They were all shocked to see Candy in such a state.

Damien Vaughn was the fastest, lunging forward in a single bound to scoop Candy into his arms.

"What happened? How did she get like this?!"

Annie stood by, her face pale with fright, completely at a loss.

"I didn’t mean to! We were playing tag, and I accidentally pushed her down. But I really didn’t mean to..."

"Waiter! Get a clean towel to stop the bleeding! Is there a doctor? Hurry!"

There was so much blood that the wound was obscured, its size and depth unknown. All he knew was that the situation was critical. Damien Vaughn’s face was grim as he roared at the waiter.

The waiter, who had never seen anything like this before, was trembling with fear.

"N-no. The towels have all been used for wiping tables. There are no clean ones."

’If we don’t stop this bleeding, she’ll go into shock at this rate.’

Anxious, Damien Vaughn whipped his head around, searching desperately, until his eyes landed on Cecelia Archer’s dress.

"Get over here!"

Cecelia steadied her trembling legs and rushed to him, reaching for Candy. But Damien suddenly squatted down, still holding Candy, and grabbed the hem of her dress.

Cecelia felt a coolness on her leg as Damien lifted the dress halfway up.

He lowered his head, bit down on the fabric, and with a sharp tug, ripped a long strip from the hem.

Cecelia quickly knelt down to help him bandage Candy.

"Candy, sweetie, don’t cry. It’s okay. Mommy’s taking you to the hospital right now. Be a good girl."

It didn’t actually hurt that much; she was mostly just scared.

With her mother and the man beside her, Candy soon stopped crying, though she was still terrified.

"Uncle, don’t go. Don’t leave me. Candy’s scared. Candy doesn’t want to die."

In that moment, she was like a luminous pearl in Damien Vaughn’s eyes—so fragile he feared she might shatter with the slightest pressure.

"Don’t worry. Uncle is here. Candy will be okay. I promise you that."

Once the wound was bandaged, Damien Vaughn stood up and apologized solemnly to Uncle Lee. ƒreewebηoveℓ.com

"Uncle Lee, I have to take the child to the hospital."

"Go on. Don’t panic. Be safe on the road."

With that said, Damien Vaughn took off, running out with Candy in his arms.

Cecelia Archer also quickly apologized to Shane Grant and Annie before turning to chase after them.

’After all, he was the one who brought Cecelia and Candy here. They were even staying at his house. How could Shane Grant not get involved at a time like this?’

"Don’t worry, I’ll go with you."

By the time they rushed to the car, Ryan had already started it and driven off with Damien Vaughn.

Shane Grant drove Cecelia, following close behind them all the way to Serenity Hospital, which was funded by the Vaughn Group.

The head of surgery was already waiting outside. He had them place Candy on a gurney and began asking Damien questions as they rushed her toward the emergency room.

"What’s the child’s blood type? How old is she? Height? Weight? Any drug allergies? Any medical history?"

Fortunately, Cecelia Archer arrived just then.

"Her blood type is quite rare—it’s RB-negative. She’s three years and four months old, with no history of allergies, but a doctor recently said her platelet count is extremely low. She was diagnosed with leukemia."

’Leukemia? And RB-negative blood? This is...’

The doctor’s expression turned grim, but after a glance at Damien Vaughn, whose face was even darker than his, he could only say...

"The situation is a bit complicated, but we’ll do our best. The family should wait outside."

’Who would have thought that someone as young as Candy could have a disease as terrifying as leukemia?’

Candy was wheeled inside. The others stood in the hallway with solemn expressions, none of them in the mood to speak.

A little over ten minutes later, a nurse came running out.

"The wound isn’t large or deep, just a simple flesh wound. But because the child’s blood-clotting ability is very poor, she’s lost a lot of blood. She needs a transfusion now."

"Coincidentally, we had a car accident patient today who also needed RB-negative blood, so our blood bank is critically low. We’re arranging an emergency transfer from another hospital, but that will take time. Is there anyone here with RB-negative blood? She needs an immediate donation!"

’Of course, I can’t donate—a biological parent can’t give blood to their own child. And people with this blood type are so incredibly rare...’

Hearing the nurse’s words, Cecelia’s heart pounded with even greater panic. Her legs went weak, and she nearly collapsed to her knees.

But then, Damien Vaughn stepped forward. "I have that blood type. I’ll donate."

There was no time for polite words of gratitude; the nurse immediately led Damien Vaughn to the blood collection room.

Watching Cecelia tremble, her face deathly pale, Shane Grant was overcome with guilt.

’If he hadn’t had the sudden whim to take them horseback riding today, this never would have happened to Candy. If something terrible happened to Candy today...’

He went over and steadied Cecelia.

"Sit down. Don’t panic. I’m here with you. It’s going to be okay."

"When was Candy diagnosed with leukemia? Have you gotten a second opinion from other hospitals? Don’t scare yourself just yet. Once she’s recovered from this injury, I’ll take her to several other hospitals to get her checked out again."

Cecelia had also hoped it was a misdiagnosis, but after what happened today, she’d lost all hope.

"There’s no need. I’ve already taken her to a specialized hospital in Corvane. It’s been confirmed."

Shane Grant looked at her pale, delicate profile and couldn’t help but think of his beloved Rose right before she passed away.

Cecelia looked so, so much like her right now.

’He hadn’t been able to save Rose back then, a failure that had haunted him his entire life. But now...’

His heart stirred. He wrapped an arm around Cecelia’s frail shoulders and guided her head into his embrace.

"Don’t be afraid. Leukemia isn’t an incurable disease. Medical technology is so advanced now; Candy will get better."

"Tomorrow, I’ll start searching the bone marrow registry for a suitable match for her. I’ll cover all the medical expenses. Just think of it as a routine surgery."

"She’s just a child. You need to be more positive and happy for her. Be a good role model, so she can face this with a healthy attitude. If she sees you so listless, she’ll lose confidence too. Okay?"

Cecelia felt his voice was like a warm breeze, blowing away the fog before her and gradually illuminating the path ahead.

’He’s going to help find a bone marrow match for Candy and cover the medical bills?’

’For a single mother like her, with no money or connections, something so impossibly out of reach was suddenly within her grasp?’

"What? Are you serious, Mr. Grant?"

Seeing the surprised and moved expression in her eyes, Shane Grant nodded at Cecelia with gentle resolve.

"Of course. You and Candy are my family now. Helping her is my responsibility. There’s no need to get so emotional."

"From now on, leave everything to me. You just focus on taking care of the children and being happy. Got it?"
