Chapter 1153: Chapter 1153: Beer Bubbling with Foam
"I really didn’t expect it to be such a coincidence, that you’d actually be here on a business trip." Janelle still tried her best to make it seem like a chance encounter.
Arthur Sutton smiled and asked her, "If I’d known, I would’ve come a day later. Riding alone must’ve been boring, right?"
Janelle said, "It was okay, not that far. You... you’re not busy tonight?"
Arthur shook his head. "Nothing tonight, they all went to a bar."
Janelle: "Then am I bothering you guys?"
"No, I wasn’t going anyway."
Janelle didn’t ask why, but she was a little curious inside.
On the surface, Arthur didn’t really look like someone who enjoys noisy crowds.
The hotel wasn’t especially close to the high-speed rail station; even by cab it took nearly twenty minutes.
Arthur led her to the hotel front desk, and while they were waiting to check in he said, "It’s already late, so just make do and stay here tonight. Tomorrow where are you going to meet your friend?"
"Meeting a friend" had been a reason Janelle came up with on the fly, so of course she hadn’t thought it through that well.
She hesitated a moment before answering, "I’m not sure yet, I’m not familiar with this area, I’ll wait for her to contact me tomorrow."
Arthur said, "I have to head out early tomorrow morning, so I probably can’t keep you company. There’s a subway station right next door, it’s convenient to get around. If anything comes up, you can call me anytime."
Janelle: "...Okay."
It felt like Arthur was always one step ahead of her, thinking of everything that needed to be considered, which made him seem very dependable.
She hadn’t forgotten the reason she’d come—to talk to Arthur about marriage.
Yet now that she’d traveled all this way to find him, she suddenly didn’t know how to bring it up.
She took the room card handed over by the front desk and walked with Arthur toward the elevators.
Just as Arthur was about to press the elevator button, Janelle suddenly asked, "...Um, do you want to grab some late-night food?"
Arthur’s hand paused. He turned his head and smiled lightly. "Sure. You didn’t have dinner?"
Janelle pressed her lips together and said, "I had some snacks on the train, but I’m a little hungry now."
Arthur: "What do you feel like eating?"
Janelle: "Do you want some beer?"
Arthur raised his brows in mild surprise, smiling as he said, "If you’re okay with it, I’m okay with it."
Janelle smiled a bit shyly. "I’ve always wanted to try that feeling of barbecue with beer."
Arthur said, "There’s a whole barbecue street along the Afton River, I’ve been once before. I’ll ask my friend which place is better."
Janelle nodded and followed him out of the hotel. "You’ve been there before? I thought you wouldn’t go to those roadside stalls and places like that."
Arthur chuckled and explained, "My sister really likes them, our whole family has gone with her plenty of times."
Janelle: "No wonder. I saw Miss Sutton post about it on her Moments a few days ago, she was probably there with her husband."
Arthur: "Yeah, after she got married she stopped clinging to us to go with her."
In the car they chatted idly about this and that, and in the end Janelle still didn’t manage to steer the conversation back to the real topic.
"Afton River" was actually a river; the street running along the bank was lined with night-stall eateries, and this was the liveliest time of night.
The night breeze off the river was cool and comfortable, laced with all kinds of enticing food aromas.
Even though the place was noisy, Janelle looked at Arthur sitting across from her and somehow felt very calm.
His voice was as gentle as always, a faint smile at the corners of his lips, each sentence like a glass of beer with tiny bubbles rising.
It didn’t make you drunk, but it made your heart float away.
