Chapter 56: Chapter 56: Outsmarted by One’s Own Cleverness

Wang Hao, with Su Zhenping in tow, came to the edge of the greenhouse and dug out the storage battery from the ground.

"I thought it was something valuable; it’s just a storage battery. But...why would you bury a storage battery here?"

Su Zhenping asked, puzzled.

"Why would I bury this thing here? Someone’s trying to harm me!"

"Who?"

"What do you think?"

Wang Hao said provocatively, arching an eyebrow.

"Ah, the guy sure hit a streak of bad luck coming up against you!"

Su Zhenping shook his head helplessly, as if he were worried about what might happen next to Zhou Mazi.

So, the two dug up the storage battery and placed it at the other end of the greenhouse. Then they filled the hole, with Wang Hao not forgetting to dump a pile of cow dung into it.

The next day, Xia Xue packed up her things and returned to the county town.

Wang Hao and the villagers continued to work in the fields as usual.

While the villagers hadn’t started yet, Zhou Mazi rushed over with a few people, eager to witness the commotion.

"Hey, what sort of wind blew you over here, Zhou Mazi? What’s up today, coming to help me with the work?"

As soon as Zhou Mazi appeared, Wang Hao went up to him with a jeer.

He knew Zhou Mazi would definitely come to see the joke today, but whose joke remained to be seen.

Wang Hao had been quite active in the fields these past few days, so more and more onlookers from the village gathered.

The more onlookers there were, the more excited Zhou Mazi became, looking forward to letting everyone see with their own eyes what it was like working for Wang Hao, a task that could kill a man.

If it was Wang Hao who died, that would be perfect.

With that in mind, Zhou Mazi began to swagger.

To Zhou Mazi’s surprise, Wang Hao was the first to approach the electrified greenhouse.

Moving closer slowly, he then reached out to touch the steel frame of the greenhouse...

Zhou Mazi clenched his teeth and stared intently at Wang Hao, chanting in his heart, "Electrocute him! Electrocute him!"

"The quality’s not bad, quite sturdy,"

Wang Hao said, nodding as he touched the steel frame of the greenhouse.

What’s going on?

Zhou Mazi was stunned; how could it be that Wang Hao was fine?

He rubbed his eyes and took another careful look.

At that moment, Wang Hao grabbed the steel frame, "You did a good job, young man. Remember to come for a drink tonight."

Zhou Mazi watched, dumbfounded and confused.

"Brother, could it be the switch wasn’t turned on?"

A person next to Zhou Mazi whispered.

"Impossible, I checked, and the switch is on."

Zhou Mazi immediately denied.

"Then could it be the connecting wire that’s loose? I’ll go check it."

The person volunteered to go and check, only to be slapped in the face by Zhou Mazi as he turned around.

"Are you brainless? Are you eager to let everyone know I buried a storage battery there?"

Zhou Mazi said furiously.

"So, what do we do now?"

The person continued to ask, covering his face.

"We’ll talk about it when it gets dark!"

Zhou Mazi replied impatiently, annoyed at having picked such a numbskull for a teammate, nearly screwing himself over.

Zhou Mazi knew that nearly the whole village was aware of his feud with Wang Hao. If they saw him loitering around Wang Hao’s greenhouse now, he would surely come under suspicion.

After Zhou Mazi left, Wang Hao laughed.

He was, of course, aware of what Zhou Mazi was thinking, and had already prepared a return gift for him in advance.

Following Xia Xue’s guidance from the previous day, the construction of the greenhouse had progressed quickly; now only the key equipment remained to be installed.

However, Wang Hao wasn’t in a hurry at the moment. For one thing, his funds were still tight, and more importantly, he needed to deal with Zhou Mazi’s issue promptly to avoid endless trouble.

After lunch, Wang Hao suggested that everyone take a break.

So, everyone found a comfortable spot to nap, taking advantage of the quiet while others were asleep.

Wang Hao called over Wang Xiaoer, whispering in his ear for quite a while before asking.

"Did you remember everything I told you?"

Wang Xiaoer nodded repeatedly after listening.

"Good, then quietly find a chance to tell the others alone, remember, don’t make a fuss!"

Wang Hao reminded sternly.

Wang Xiaoer nodded again.

In the afternoon, it seemed like everyone had something on their mind as they periodically zoned out and stopped their work.

So, the progress was much slower than before.

Finally, evening came, and everybody gathered again at Wang Hao’s house to drink. They laughed and joked until nightfall before staggering back home.

The other villagers were dying of envy; well-fed and taken care of all day, and even earning wages.

Who wouldn’t want such a good deal? Some of the villagers began to waver, regretting not renting their land to Wang Hao.

Deep into the night, Zhou Mazi led his group to the greenhouse again.

Looking at the completed greenhouse, Zhou Mazi thought, he had checked everything, so why was there no reaction at all?

While pondering, he reached out to touch the greenhouse’s metal frame, imitating Wang Hao’s earlier gesture.

He had barely touched it when he felt his whole body go numb, and then he started to shake uncontrollably, unable to shake it off.

"There’s... uh..." freēwēbηovel.c૦m

Zhou Mazi knew he was being electrocuted but couldn’t get the words out as his body trembled non-stop.

The others realized something was wrong when they saw Zhou Mazi convulsing, guessing that he had been electrocuted.

They quickly picked up a cornstalk from the ground and started hitting Zhou Mazi with it.

Zhou Mazi finally let go of the metal frame, his hand charred by the electricity. It was only the smell of something burning that brought him back to his senses.

"What the... what’s going on? Why is there electricity again?"

Zhou Mazi, supported by others, still couldn’t figure out what had happened.

The others were also mystified; Wang Hao had touched it during the day without issue, so why was it electrified at night?

"Damn it, did you just hit my head on purpose? Are you trying to kill me?"

Zhou Mazi looked at the person next to him, still holding the cornstalk.

No wonder his head was still spinning, accompanied by throbbing pain; he had been hit by them.

As he realized this, Zhou Mazi felt something was off and told his men to start digging up the battery to see what was going on.

"Who just farted? Why does it smell so bad?"

The group had just squatted down to dig when a foul stench wafted over.

"Quit your yapping and just dig!"

Zhou Mazi cursed impatiently, his only concern was to dig out the battery and find out if it was damaged.

Fearing that the hoe might damage the battery, Zhou Mazi ordered them to dig with their hands.

"Eh? What’s this? Why is it so sticky?"

"Ugh, damn it, who’s the bastard that buried cow dung here..."

Everyone’s hands were smeared with cow dung, and as they brought it up to their noses, the overwhelming smell rushed into their stomachs, causing them to retch continuously.

"Where’s my battery? Is the storage battery still there?"

Zhou Mazi didn’t care how anyone felt, he just wanted to find his storage battery.

Upon closer inspection, the battery was nowhere to be found, with only a large pile of thoroughly stirred cow dung in its place.

Zhou Mazi suddenly thought of the smug look in Wang Hao’s eyes earlier that day and had an epiphany.

"Damn, I’ve fallen for that bastard Wang Hao’s trick."

Wang Hao must have switched his storage battery, Zhou Mazi couldn’t help but slap himself hard in the face.

He felt too embarrassed to ask for it back now, thirty thousand yuan!

Just like that, he had handed it over to Wang Hao.

Suddenly, a large crowd of villagers surged out from behind the greenhouse in the darkness.

"Catch the thief!"
