Chapter 4: Magic Core

(Hmm... I wonder what this could be?)

Wrapped in his elongated tongue is a deep red rock with the size of a baseball. He found it in the chest of the orc, right beside its heart. It is a rough and rugged prism in the shape of an octahedron.

For some reason, he can feel a mysterious force radiating from it. He speculates that this crystal might be the source of magic of the inhabitants of this world, the magic core.

Curious, he tries to take a bite of it, but it is harder than it looks. When he exerts his max bite force, the prism shatters, and most of its shards fall into his mouth.

T’KRAK!

(Ugh!)

The sharp shards hit his insides and they hurt him a little bit. After that, the shards are then absorbed by his interior flesh like how it digests bones earlier. Shortly after, he starts to feel some subtle change in his body, but it is more like a power-up.

(Did I just feel lighter? Did that rock do something to my body?)

Although it’s small, he can feel that my body has become stronger. To convince himself that he is right, he licks the remaining fragments of the prism on the floor. As expected, he gains a little power.

Even within him, there is this something that is getting more prevalent. It feels like something magical is slowly awakening in him, which makes him ask a question.

(If, in case, I am transported by another magic, could it be that there is magic? Given that I am a mimic eating an orc as well as gaining its night vision, it could probably exist to a certain extent.)

To further prove his theory, he turns around to face the empty hallway before trying to cast magic on his own.

(Alright, I’ll start with the basics and staple in games. Fireball.)

...

He waits and waits, but nothing happens. It is his first time doing it, so it could probably be a rookie mistake. Refusing to give up, he does it again and again, but still nothing changes. He then tries to change strategy. Perhaps he is lacking imagination, so he tries to visualize a ball of flames or water.

(Fireball. Waterball. Abra Kadabra.)

...

Even with that, he still proceeds to fail repeatedly. And then suddenly, he remembers that he forgets an important aspect of magic: invocation, incantations, or recitation of the spells.

However, the problem is that he anatomically cannot utter a single word, just growl. Thankfully, he can solve that problem by eating the orc’s mouth and vocal cords. Unfortunately, his brethren have eaten them while he is trying to do magic there.

(That can’t be only one orc in this place. There might be other monsters around.)

Passing by the orc’s carcass, he moves further into the unknown, looking for other things to devour. He might as well look for the exit of this place. There may be a place where the sun basks its light. ƒree𝑤ebnσvel.com

As he explores the place with no exact destination, he travels for a few hundred meters before he finds another dead body of an orc. It is lying headfirst, facing the same direction as the one before, and seems to have died not long ago. He suspects that it might also have died from extreme heat due to the burns on its skin.

(Time to dig in.)

Chomp!

With a new food source, he immediately opens his mouth wide and devours its head in just one big bite. Ever since taking that prism earlier, he has gained the strength to easily break apart bones and joints.

After the head, he proceeds to the upper torso and leaves a huge rectangular bite mark on it, taking some of its internal organs. With the vocal cords absorbed, he immediately recreates it inside my body, which is seemingly successful, and attempts to utter a word.

"HE-LL-O..."

(I did it!)

For the first time in that body, he is now able to speak. Though, his word is barely recognizable. Even so, he is so thrilled that he is jumping all around, repeatedly stomping his flat bottom on the rigid floor. Suddenly, his excitement immediately disappears as soon as he hears something that is definitely not made by him.

Rumble. Rumble.

The sounds are in sequence with a certain interval and coming from the direction he came from. They feel heavy, and their volume is gradually getting louder every second.

He is afraid that the sounds are made by a gigantic being, something that he has no chance fighting to. Knowing that he has likely no chance against it, he hurriedly stabs the chest of the orc’s carcass and takes its deep red prism before bouncing his body away from the sounds.

After traveling for around a hundred meters, he passes a huge opening in the corridor, which he then decides to enter. He peeps a part of his body outside by relocating one eye on his tongue. By doing that, it allows him to get a view of that monster.

Thud. Thud.

Turning around a sharp corner at the end of the massive hallway, the monster finally reveals itself. The first thing he notes is that it is ridiculously big and massive. Each of its steps generates a small quake. If his perception is still right, that monster stands at least twenty meters in height, even reaching up to thirty meters.

It is shaped like a humanoid, which consists of a torso, arms, legs, and head. It is also moving really slow probably because the entire thing is seemingly made out of rocks and boulders; it is a construct. On its head, a small and shiny rock is serving its eyes. At first glance, he already has an idea of what kind of monster it is.

(A golem. Are they this huge in this world?)

Unbeknownst to him, what he is seeing is no ordinary golem, but rather, a much bigger construct called a colossus golem. It is a once-in-a-blue-moon disaster that can flatten city blocks by just passing by them.

The massive golem slowly walks along the hallway, shaking the floor. As it passes by, one of its feet, which is at least two meters wide, steps on the dead orc’s body and flattens it like a swatted mosquito.

Splat!

Blood and flesh splatter around, and the blood smears on its already red foot. It looks like it has walked over a few monsters before coming here. The golem then passes the room where the mimic is hiding, and he internally lets out a sigh of relief when it is far enough.

(Thankfully, it doesn’t seem to be interested in meat.)

After that, he stares at the orc’s prism that is in his tongue before putting it inside his mouth and shattering it into pieces, which his body passively consumes. Almost immediately, he feels that little permanent power gain again, and his senses slightly sharpen on top of that.

With improved smelling, the savory smell behind me gets stronger. When he turns around, he finds himself in front of a room full of dead orc bodies.

(Looks like I got a jackpot today. More gems, more power-ups. I wonder if that golem has one as well.)

The mimic solos an orc’s spawn point, which has been already discontinued, and devours everything he could fit into his mouth.
