Chapter 1171: Good Samaritan
Seeing Anthony fall silent, the Spirit King asked, "When do you plan to ascend?" His tone was curious, as he would love to watch the scene unfold.
"I don’t know yet, it’s not like I have a specific date or time," Anthony replied. "But I do plan to ascend at the same time as my friends, just in case anything is waiting for us during the Ascension or at the final destination," he answered calmly.
"Smart," the Spirit King replied.
The Spirit King thought for a moment, his memory running back to ages ago as he suddenly remembered something, something only he seemed to have witnessed at the time, as not even the Demon King nor other old beings like him had witnessed it. He, the Spirit King, had only been lucky enough to witness it simply because he was at that place at that particular time.
With that memory, he took out a wooden talisman from his space ring and gave it to Anthony.
"As you are ascending, I will give this to you as your ascension gift," he spoke as he passed over the wooden talisman.
Anthony stared at it for a moment before he took it from the Spirit King, but after examining it for a while, he couldn’t figure out what it was.
’OP System, what is this?’ Anthony decided to ask, as even Authority Of Information had failed to work on the item, which only meant it possessed immense value.
[Ding]
[An artefact from an Upper Galaxy, owned by #@@##??]
Anthony was immediately confused. He understood that there was almost no connection between the Upper Galaxy and the Lower Galaxy. People like the Executioner, whom he had faced on his first military mission, were a special case, and that was the only recorded case in history.
’Why can’t I hear the name of the owner?’ Anthony asked the system.
[Ding]
[The Host is simply too weak. This has nothing to do with the system, as the system is saying the owner’s name]
Anthony’s lips twitched. The last time he had experienced something like this was years ago when he met ??? for the first time. Now he was encountering another person whose name he couldn’t hear.
’Are they on ???’s level or something?’ Anthony thought to himself. It seemed impossible.
[Ding]
[The Host is overthinking it. When the Host becomes an Ascendant, he will be able to hear the name of the owner]
Anthony nodded and said nothing else. His eyes turned to the Spirit King, about to question the guy about how he had come into contact with such a thing, but before he could speak, the Spirit King spoke first.
"You seem to recognize it," the Spirit King stated, as he could deduce that much from Anthony’s expression.
"I have special eyes, but I only know that this is an artefact from an Upper Galaxy," Anthony replied and said nothing else as he waited for the Spirit King to explain.
The Spirit King began to speak. "The reason the Demon King is so hell-bent on Ascension is because he witnessed a Human ascend a couple years ago," his tone calm.
Anthony was surprised that a Human had ascended and not one of the Dragons or the top races of the Acarnis Galaxy, like the Celestial Race.
"The Demon King wasn’t the only one who witnessed the Human ascend. I and my friends also watched. And he was the first Human to ascend, at least since I came into being and until this day, as I can’t speak for the Olden and Ancient Times," the Spirit King continued. "But anyway, long story short, the Human returned to this Galaxy after his Ascension."
Anthony froze where he sat. Of course, he had guessed that people might be able to return to their Lower Galaxies after they reached a certain power level, or perhaps they didn’t need to reach any specific power level at all and could simply return whenever they wanted. But that had remained speculation and guesswork, not fact.
Now hearing that someone had returned transformed the possibility into a fact.
"Yes, his return was quiet and calm, unlike his Ascension, so only I, who was fortunate enough to be at the location of his return, saw him. And I remember him perfectly because I know him as the only Human who had achieved Ascension," the Spirit King continued. "He said he came to check whether any of his descendants possessed the necessary talent, and he would take them back with him. If not, he would allow them to remain here and grow on their own." He paused for a moment as though allowing Anthony to keep up.
"But none of his descendants possessed enough talent, which is understandable, so he could only return empty-handed," the Spirit King continued. "But before he went back to the Upper Galaxy, he entrusted this wooden talisman to me and told me to give it to anyone who was about to ascend, as they would need a backing upon Ascension." He paused again before adding, "And according to him, it was best to use it during their Ascension, and not after Ascension," the Spirit King explained.
’A backing,’ Anthony thought to himself in silence.
After thinking for a while, Anthony couldn’t help but smirk. With his ridiculous intelligence, he had arrived at a conclusion; the wooden talisman could influence the destination Upper Galaxy the user would arrive at if they activated it.
After all, what was the use of the wooden talisman if he landed in a completely different Upper Galaxy from the owner? If he used it there, obviously the owner wouldn’t come to help. If they could, they wouldn’t have specifically spoken about using the wooden talisman during Ascension. freewёbnoνel.com
Anthony understood the benefits of a backing. Look at how easy his life was simply because he was the child of the Sword Saint and the Elemental Witch Of Destruction, while also being the grandson of the Lightning God and the Saintess Of The World. Now, that was a ridiculous backing.
And if you asked Anthony, he would pick such a backing again over starting from nothing simply because of "pride" or because he was a "man." Such things were just plain stupid.
But the question was, could the owner of this talisman be trusted?
Old people schemed a lot, after all. What if the old Ascendant needed his descendants for something, which was why he had returned? But seeing that none of his descendants met the standards, he simply shifted his attention to another person; the next Ascendant, who would most likely be naïve and believe that the old Ascendant was helping a junior from the same Lower Galaxy.
Anthony couldn’t help but sigh. Of course, it could just be him overthinking the entire situation. But if there was one thing Anthony was, it was cautious when it came to old people who were stronger than him. These people were always scheming, and this old Ascendant was a schemer from an Upper Galaxy who could be playing a very long game.
Clearly, the difficulty level of such a scheming tactic was insane, and he hadn’t even stepped foot into an Upper Galaxy yet.
’Maybe he could be a kind old man, a good Samaritan, and I’m here tarnishing his image,’ Anthony thought to himself with a sigh, as he understood that he too could be selfless sometimes.
But still... it was best to remain cautious and only throw caution to the wind when he was as strong as these old-time schemers.
