Chapter 25: Ch 25: The Confession Train On Bridge VII
Luke wiped a line of blood from his chin that leaked out of the mask with the back of his hand, the metallic taste sharp on his tongue.
Gwen landed on the tracks in front of him. She glanced quickly over her shoulder. The train carriage holding the hostages was parked about a hundred meters behind her.
Turning back, she locked her eyes on Veritas, who stood twenty feet away, wiping a thin line of blood that had slipped out of his mask.
She didn’t give him a chance to recover.

A line of webbing shot right past Luke’s ear, anchoring firmly to a thick steel beam directly behind him. Gwen pulled hard, turning her own body into a human slingshot. She catapulted herself toward him at breakneck speed, tucking her knees in to perform a mid-air somersault.
Using all that wild momentum, she snapped her right leg up and then swung it down in a brutal, dropkick aimed right at his head.
Luke blocked it by crossing both of his arms firmly above his head.
Bam!
The sheer force of her kick pushed Luke’s shoes back a few inches, scraping loudly against the metal tracks.
’Yeah, definitely leaving a huge bruise there,’ he thought, his arm bones rattling all the way down to his shoulders.
Before he could even think about recovering his stance, Gwen was already pressing the attack.
From that second on, the air went completely dead. No more quips. No more jokes. Just the raw, heavy breathing of two fighters entirely focused on knocking each other out.
One fought to save lives, while the other fought just for shits and giggles.
Gwen threw a lightning-fast left jab. Luke parried it with his palm, but she immediately transitioned into a spinning back fist. The back of her hand landed on his jaw, rattling his teeth.
Stumbling back half a step, Luke swiped his right hand, forcing it faster with a small palm explosion, then curling it into a fist at the last moment.
Gwen ducked beneath the hand, the sudden burst of heat scorching the top of her hood.
Taking advantage of her low position, Luke brought his knee up toward her chest. Gwen twisted her torso sideways, letting the knee graze her ribs, and planted both hands on the metal track to sweep her legs in a wide kick.
Luke leaped over her legs and fired a small-scale explosion from his palm directly downward.
BOOM!
With every dodge, every flip, and every swing, Gwen was naturally jumping around the bridge’s structure.
It didn’t take long for her evasive maneuvers to bring her exactly where he wanted her: dangerously close to the outer edge of the bridge.
Beneath his mask, Luke grinned.
’Gotcha.’
Instead of dodging or blocking, Luke bent forward and aimed both hands behind him.
BOOOOOOOOOOM!
A massive blast of fire erupted, launching him forward like a rocket.
He hurtled right through her guard, tackling her head-on. Before Gwen could react to the sheer speed, his left arm wrapped tightly around her slim waist like a vice.
Together, they shot straight off the edge of the bridge.
"Hey! Creepy Clown, personal space!" Gwen yelled, finally breaking the silence.
With his free left hand aimed below them, he fired another massive, concentrated blast, shooting them straight in the sky.
BOOSH!
"Are you crazy?!" Gwen yelled, the wind suddenly roaring past her mask.
She didn’t just sit there and take the kidnapping. She brought her elbows down in a vicious, rapid-fire series of strikes, hammering into his back and shoulders.
THUD! THUD! THUD!`
Luke gritted his teeth, his spine screaming in protest, but he stubbornly tanked every single hit. He refused to let go of her waist.
He needed to take away her advantage. He needed to take the battle in the skies.
She looked down and saw the dark river and the massive bridge shrinking rapidly beneath her feet. The train carriages looked like tiny toy models now, and the distance was increasing at a terrifying, dizzying rate.
’Shit,’ she thought.
Realizing that beating his back wasn’t going to stop their ascent, she stopped throwing elbows. Instead, she grabbed onto his broad shoulders, trying to physically pry herself free from his iron-tight grip.
"Let go of me, you sick, creepy clown!" Gwen shouted, her legs kicking in the empty air.
"Sure," Luke replied with a chuckle, his voice muffled behind the mask. "Don’t come swinging back to me, though."
He suddenly opened his arms and shoved her away with both palms. A small controlled blast exploded from his hands, launching her like a ragdoll into the open sky.
Gwen’s eyes widened in panic. They were ridiculously high. No buildings. No lampposts. Nothing solid for her webs to latch onto.
"Waaait—!" she yelped as gravity took over. She started plummeting fast, wind roaring in her ears.
Above her, Veritas hovered with his arms crossed, that creepy, wide smile stretching across his clown mask. He looked way too pleased with himself.
Gwen twisted mid-fall and fired a web line straight at him.
Thwip!
Luke simply tilted his head, dodging the strand effortlessly. His smile grew even wider, like he’d already won.
But the web wasn’t meant for him.
The sticky strand whipped past and latched onto the small floating phone that always hovered around him, streaming the entire fight live to the city.
Gwen grinned.
She yanked hard on the web and slingshotted herself back up, spinning gracefully through the air. With perfect balance, she landed on the tiny phone on one foot like an Olympic gymnast, arms spread for balance.
The phone supported her weight easily.
Luke blinked, still hovering steadily by firing tiny controlled explosions from his palms to stay aloft. "Huh. Impressive... but futile."
He suddenly blasted upward in a burst of fire, then twisted and aimed both hands at her.
BOOOOOOM!
A massive fireball exploded toward her. Gwen leaped off at the last second, tucking into a flip, but the phone... it got too far away to latch on.
Free-falling once again, Gwen readied her fists. But Luke wasn’t playing around anymore.
BOOM!
He blasted himself forward, moving so fast he became a blur. He didn’t attack her from the front; he shot right underneath her falling body.
Using the sheer momentum of his flight, he spun like a top mid-air and landed a devastating spinning kick right into her stomach.
BAM!
"Gah—!" Gwen gasped, the air knocked out of her lungs as she shot upward from the impact.
The heavy impact completely reversed her momentum. Instead of falling, she was launched straight up into the sky like a ragdoll.
She didn’t even have time to blink before Luke was on her again.
BOOM!
He threw a powerful punch aimed right at her masked face.
Gwen barely had the reflex to cross her arms in an X-guard over her face.
CRASH!
His fist slammed into her forearms with the force of a wrecking ball, accompanied by a small point-blank explosion. His punch burned her suit and charred her skin.
Her arms felt numb. She couldn’t find her balance.
This time, Luke didn’t pursue her immediately. Instead, he pointed his hands down and fired a continuous, deafening stream of fire, blasting himself much, much higher, way past her tumbling form.
He looked down at Gwen, who was still soaring upward from his last punch.
’Let’s see you tank this, Gwen...’
Reaching the absolute highest point in the sky, his momentum briefly paused. It was perfectly quiet for a fraction of a second.
Smoothly, gracefully, he flipped his body over, aiming himself headfirst toward the earth. Toward her.
"Howitzer..." Luke whispered to the wind.
He angled his palms slightly outward and opposite directions, and unleashed a furious, continuous torrent of explosions.
The angled blasts didn’t just propel him downward; they forced his entire body into a rapid, violent spin. He spun faster and faster, blurring into a literal human tornado.
’...Impact!’
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!
The spinning flames fed into each other, creating a massive, roaring cyclone of yellow and orange fire. It looked like a literal tornado of explosions, swallowing the sky and sucking up all the oxygen around it.
Gwen’s eyes went wide. "Oh, you have got to be kidding me—!"
Gwen could only do one thing.
She crossed her arms tightly over her face, bracing for the worst.
The burning cyclone slammed into her like a meteor.
BOOOOOOOOM!
