Chapter 85: Chapter 85: We’re Getting Married
Charles Prescott said, "I’m just worried you’ll be deceived! You don’t know anyone here in Veridia, so who could you have possibly met?"
Anne Sutton looked at Charles Prescott and said, "Is there any man in this world more deceitful than you? What did you say back when you forced me to get an abortion? Didn’t you say you were going to marry me? Well, go on, marry me now!"
She knew Charles Prescott didn’t have the guts.
’She was just furious that he had used that lie to fool her father and make her lose her child.’
Charles Prescott said, "So you’re willing to marry me now?"
Anne Sutton said, "Why wouldn’t I be? Marrying you would make me Mrs. Prescott, wouldn’t it? Back then, you swore you loved me and that’s why you made me get rid of the baby. But now you’re marrying someone else?"
Charles Prescott said, "Anne, as long as you’re willing, of course I’ll marry you. My engagement to Mia Shaw has already been called off."
"Was it called off, or did the Shaw Family decide they didn’t want you as a son-in-law?" Anne Sutton’s lips curved into a smirk. "Mr. Prescott must be furious right now! After all, such a good match went up in smoke just like that."
"Why would I be furious? As long as you’re willing to be with me, I couldn’t be happier. It’s just..."
"Just what?" Anne Sutton looked at him curiously.
Charles Prescott said with a troubled expression, "You know my status right now. I don’t just represent myself; I represent the company’s image. The company is having a lot of problems lately, and if I get together with you, people will definitely gossip. You’re a widow now. Even though you weren’t with Nathan Fawcett for long, in everyone’s eyes, you were his woman. If I get together with you, what will people think of me?"
"So in the end, you never had any intention of marrying me. All that high-and-mighty talk back then... Charles Prescott, you really are the most disgusting man in the world!"
’Even though she held no hope—and wouldn’t have married him even if he had asked—seeing him like this was still utterly ironic.’
Charles Prescott said, "Marriage doesn’t equate to love. Sometimes, marriage is just a tool. Plenty of people get married, have a bad relationship, and end up divorcing anyway. Two people who are truly in love can be together even without the chains of marriage. You’re different in my heart. Otherwise... look at what happened yesterday. I didn’t hold it against you. I didn’t even get mad at you!"
"...Then I should thank you!"
’He was the one who would never marry her, who thought she would bring him shame and that her current status was beneath him. Yet he could still make it sound so noble!’
’Anne Sutton really had to hand it to him.’
Charles Prescott said, "Look at you! I’m trying to talk to you nicely, and you’re still like this! Can’t you just be pleasant to me for once?"
"No."
Charles Prescott didn’t press the issue. He said gently, "I’ve booked you a flight. You’ll go back tonight with my grandmother, and Leo too. I still have things to take care of here. Once I’m done, I’ll come find you. Anne, I may not be able to offer you marriage right now, but I will treat you well. I’m sure you’re not the type to care about such things anyway."
As he was speaking to Anne Sutton, his phone rang. He took it out, and Anne glanced at it. The name "Mia Shaw" was on the screen.
Anne Sutton said sarcastically, "Your fiancée is looking for you."
Charles Prescott glanced at her, then looked down and rejected the call.
He said to her, "See? I rejected it. I didn’t pick up. I never liked Mia Shaw anyway, or else I wouldn’t have broken up with her in the first place. You probably don’t know this, but the reason I broke up with her back then was actually because of you."
"Oh?"
"I have no feelings for her now; it’s just for the sake of a business partnership. The engagement can be called off at any time. Sometimes a man has to put on an act for appearances. I’m responsible for the entire company, for so many employees. Anne, you can understand that, can’t you?"
"..." Anne Sutton said, "Keep spinning your tales. Go on."
Charles Prescott was about to say something when a man’s voice suddenly called out from the side, "Anne."
Anne Sutton froze for a moment. She turned her head and saw Nathan Fawcett standing there.
Two hotel employees were standing beside him.
Anne Sutton stared at him, stunned.
’If she hadn’t misheard, he had just called her... Anne.’
’His tone was completely different from how he’d acted in the hotel room.’
’After all, in the hotel room, he had spoken to her with nothing but suspicion.’
’But now, he was acting so intimate.’
Anne Sutton stared at the man, wondering what he was up to.
Nathan Fawcett had already walked over. "You left something behind," he said to her.
Anne Sutton was confused. "What did I leave?"
Nathan Fawcett reached out, took her hand, pulled a watch from his pocket, and put it back on her wrist.
It was indeed her watch. Anne Sutton had been upset when she left the hotel room earlier, so she had forgotten something.
She looked at the man before her, who looked identical to Nathan Fawcett, and felt his gentleness was almost unreal. "Thank you."
Charles Prescott stood to the side, watching the man who had suddenly appeared. He couldn’t shake the feeling that he looked familiar.
But...
...Charles Prescott couldn’t recall where he might have seen him. fɾēewebnσveℓ.com
Charles Prescott asked, "And you are...?"
Nathan Fawcett glanced at Charles Prescott and introduced himself. "Ethan Linden."
Charles Prescott froze when he heard the name. ’The Linden Family of Veridia... It was a name he couldn’t possibly have failed to hear of.’
Especially since coming here recently, Mia Shaw had mentioned Ethan Linden to him more than a few times.
Hearing this, Charles Prescott proactively extended his hand. "Hello. Charles Prescott." fɾeewebnoveℓ.co๓
Nathan Fawcett looked at Charles Prescott’s outstretched hand but didn’t shake it. Instead, he reached over, put his arm around Anne Sutton’s shoulder, and said, "Let’s go."
Anne Sutton: "..."
She looked at Nathan Fawcett, confused. In her eyes, Nathan Fawcett was just a married man she barely knew.
But what was he doing now?
Holding her hand like this, in front of everyone...
Anne Sutton was dumbfounded and desperately wanted to pull her hand free.
But then she heard Charles Prescott say, "Mr. Linden, are you very familiar with my aunt?"
Seeing this man holding Anne Sutton’s hand so brazenly, a wave of possessiveness washed over Charles Prescott.
’He would never marry Anne Sutton!’
’But strangely, seeing someone else by her side made him feel as if his property had been encroached upon, and it was deeply unsettling.’
’Besides, how did Anne Sutton end up with the Family Head of the Linden Family?’
’Could the man who was with her last night have been Ethan Linden?’
’No, impossible!’
’The Linden Family’s status is immense. How could someone of Ethan Linden’s standing ever be interested in Anne Sutton?’
’She’s a widow!’
Anne Sutton looked at Charles Prescott. ’That calculating bastard. He’s calling me ’aunt’ on purpose, just to let everyone know I’m a widow!’
’Too bad for him, he doesn’t know that Ethan Linden is perfectly aware of everything between me and Nathan Fawcett.’
Nathan Fawcett looked at Charles Prescott, squeezed Anne Sutton’s hand, and said, "We’re already planning to get married. You tell me if we’re familiar."
