Chapter 84: Chapter 84: Grandnephew
Henry Underwood announced Charles Prescott’s orders expressionlessly. "Mr. Prescott said that from now on, he won’t let you see the child again."
"Why?" Sylvia Warren protested. "I’m the one who went through so much to give birth to Leo."
Henry Underwood looked at Sylvia Warren and said, "Miss Warren, you’re a smart woman. If I were you, I’d take what’s yours and leave quickly. If I remember correctly, your mother is still in the hospital, isn’t she? What, are you planning on a scorched-earth approach, not even caring about your own mother?"
It seemed Henry Underwood was very experienced in handling matters like this.
He was quite skilled with this mix of threats and enticements.
The moment she heard him mention her mother, Sylvia Warren instantly backed down. She had no powerful connections; there was no way she could fight Charles Prescott.
Sylvia Warren dropped her defiant stance and admitted her fault to Henry Underwood. "Special Assistant Underwood, I know I was wrong yesterday. I shouldn’t have come and ruined Mr. Prescott’s engagement ceremony. It was thoughtless of me. I’ll never dare to do it again."
"Never dare again?" Henry Underwood said. "I think there’s nothing you wouldn’t dare, Miss Warren. Don’t come and bother Mr. Prescott anymore. When you gave birth to the child, he was soft-hearted enough not to kick you out. But now you’re pushing your luck. Do you really think Mr. Prescott is a pushover?"
"Then can you please let me see Leo one more time?" The thought of being thrown out without even getting to see her son made Sylvia Warren miserable.
Henry Underwood said, "You are not worthy of seeing the Young Master."
After speaking, he instructed a nearby driver, "Get her out of here." fɾēewebnσveℓ.com
The driver nodded.
"Special Assistant Underwood." Sylvia Warren hadn’t given up and was about to chase after him...
Henry Underwood walked directly toward the elevator where Anne Sutton was standing.
He was taken aback for a moment when he saw Anne Sutton. "Ms. Sutton."
Sylvia Warren’s gaze fell on Anne Sutton. She grabbed Henry Underwood’s sleeve and said, "I didn’t want to come yesterday! She’s the one who told me to! If she hadn’t told me about Mr. Prescott’s engagement, I wouldn’t have even known about it."
Anne Sutton stood to the side, watching as a cornered and desperate Sylvia Warren tried to drag her down too.
But Anne Sutton wasn’t worried.
A corner of her mouth lifted into a smile. "It was me, Assistant Underwood. I was the one who called her over yesterday. I just thought it would be a real shame for Charles Prescott to get engaged without Miss Warren and Leo present, so I made a special trip to invite them. You can go ahead and blame me!"
’She wasn’t afraid of Charles Prescott anyway.’
Hearing Anne Sutton’s words, Henry Underwood said cautiously, "Ms. Sutton, you shouldn’t say that. This has nothing to do with you, and you don’t need to cover for a woman like her. If she had half a brain, she would’ve known not to show up."
After he finished, Henry Underwood glanced at Sylvia Warren. ’She really is an idiot, trying to drag Ms. Sutton into this.’
Standing to the side, Sylvia Warren finally realized she had been used as a pawn by Anne Sutton.
But as Nathan Fawcett’s widow, no one dared to cross Anne Sutton.
As for herself...
Now she was the one Charles Prescott was targeting.
Henry Underwood left quickly.
Sylvia Warren walked over. She looked at Anne Sutton and said, "You told me to come yesterday just to set me up, didn’t you?"
"..." Hearing Sylvia Warren’s words, Anne Sutton said, "How could you say that? Charles Prescott was about to get engaged to someone else. I called you over out of good intentions, didn’t I? Otherwise, he’d be with another woman right now. Would you have been okay with that?"
Sylvia Warren lowered her head. Spurred by Anne Sutton’s words, tears of grievance streamed down her face. "Why? I’m the only woman in the world who has borne him a child. Why is he treating me like this? I gave up my career for him these past few years. Why does he still want to marry someone else? He clearly said he liked me before! He said he would marry me."
Anne Sutton had no favorable impression of Sylvia Warren whatsoever.
After all, Sylvia Warren was the one who had started this whole mess.
She was also the one who had run to the hospital back then to provoke her.
If it weren’t for Sylvia Warren, perhaps she would never have realized where she truly stood in Charles Prescott’s heart.
But seeing Sylvia Warren now, Anne Sutton just found her rather pathetic.
She said to Sylvia Warren, "Only a fool would take a man’s pillow talk seriously. What’s so special about you that would make Charles Prescott marry you? Are you as capable as Mia Shaw? Can you bring him resources? You don’t even have a job of your own right now. As for the child... what other woman couldn’t give him one?"
Sylvia Warren looked up at Anne Sutton. "Then what should I do? Tell me, what should I do? If I leave him, how am I supposed to live?"
Anne Sutton took a tissue from her pocket, reached out, and wiped her tears. "What are you crying for? You can’t live without him? Aren’t you an actress? You can go back to acting. Compared to being a nobody before, you’re now known as the mother of Charles Prescott’s child. Plenty of people will be interested in you."
Hearing Anne Sutton’s words, Sylvia Warren took the tissue, wiped her tears, and said, "Ms. Sutton, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have come looking for you at the hospital before! I was so foolish back then. I thought that if you just left, I could be with him. I thought he really meant it when he said he liked me. I thought you two had no feelings for each other. Only now do I realize he has no feelings for anyone."
"..." Anne Sutton said, "It’s nothing. I may not like you, but I also know he’s the main culprit. Stop crying. Go on back, the driver is still waiting for you."
Sylvia Warren finished wiping her tears, glanced at Anne Sutton, and then followed the driver out.
Charles Prescott came down from upstairs. "Anne."
Anne Sutton turned her head. Seeing Charles Prescott, she didn’t look surprised at all.
She said, "Nephew."
Charles Prescott’s face darkened. He walked over and asked, "What did you say to Sylvia Warren?"
He had just gotten out of the elevator when he saw her talking to Sylvia Warren.
This struck Charles Prescott as odd.
’Doesn’t she despise Sylvia Warren more than anyone?’
But just now, the way they were talking, they looked like the best of friends.
Anne Sutton said, "Nothing much. Just saving a poor woman you cast aside."
Charles Prescott looked at her. "She’s the one who doesn’t know her place. She actually thought I would marry her. Don’t you find that hilarious?" freewёbnoνel.com
"You could sleep with her, so why couldn’t you marry her?" Anne Sutton shot back.
Charles Prescott was at a loss for words.
He said to Anne Sutton, "What were you doing last night? I was looking for you all night. You didn’t even answer your phone."
Anne Sutton glanced at her phone and saw that there were indeed a few missed calls from Charles Prescott.
She said, "Sorry. I was on a date with a handsome guy last night. Didn’t have time for your calls."
"A handsome guy?" Charles Prescott froze for a second. He remembered hearing someone mention this morning that they’d seen Anne Sutton with a man. ’Could it be true?’
He said to Anne Sutton, "What man? Where did you find another man just to piss me off?"
For the past few years in Westhaven, she hadn’t had anyone by her side.
It seemed her heart was still occupied by Nathan Fawcett, which was a source of great dissatisfaction for Charles Prescott.
Anne Sutton said, "You say that as if we have some kind of relationship. Who I’m with has nothing to do with you."
