Chapter 70: Chapter 70: Taking Him Home

"About another month, I think," Nathan Fawcett said. "Before I go, I’ll transfer my assets to you. I know you must feel wronged being with someone like me, but since you’re carrying my child, I won’t treat you unfairly. I’ll fulfill our agreement."

"..." ’Even though their marriage was just a transaction, hearing Nathan Fawcett say it so casually made her feel a little sorry for him.’

She said to Nathan Fawcett, "Why don’t you come home with me tomorrow?"

"Why would we go to your house?" Nathan Fawcett asked. "Your family is afraid of me. You want to go just to make them uncomfortable?"

"...So you knew!" Anne Sutton was surprised he was aware of that.

’It wasn’t that he had low emotional intelligence, then. He just genuinely didn’t care what other people thought of him.’

Anne Sutton said, "Please, let’s go together! I’m pregnant and I’ve been craving my mom’s cooking. Come with me."

Nathan Fawcett looked at her and said, "Alright."

Around noon, Anne Sutton sent her mother a message before heading over with Nathan Fawcett.

Sharon Sutton and Sean Sutton weren’t home today.

Mrs. Sutton had cooked a meal.

She was overjoyed to see her daughter return, but her happiness faded when she saw Nathan Fawcett.

She served them both some rice and asked Anne, "What brings you here so suddenly?"

Anne Sutton said, "I was craving your cooking, so I came over."

Mrs. Sutton smiled. "Well, eat up then."

Nathan Fawcett sat to one side, showing little interest in any food that wasn’t made by Anne.

Anne Sutton looked at him and said, "Go on, try some of my mom’s cooking."

"Yes, please try some, Mr. Fawcett," Mrs. Sutton said, picking up her chopsticks to place some food in his bowl.

Knowing Nathan Fawcett was in poor health, she had only stir-fried light dishes.

Nathan Fawcett said, "Thank you."

He took a bite.

Mrs. Sutton watched him, a little nervous. "How is it?"

Nathan Fawcett said, "Mm, it’s good."

And he meant it.

’Anne must have told her beforehand, because the food tasted very similar to what Anne made.’

"If you like it, Mr. Fawcett, you and Anne are welcome to come over often. I can cook for you. I’m usually home by myself, and eating alone is rather dull."

Nathan Fawcett sat to one side, watching Mrs. Sutton. He could tell she was an exceptionally gentle person.

Anne Sutton said to her mother, "Mom, you can call him Nathan!"

"Well..." Mrs. Sutton hesitated. She had always been prejudiced against Nathan Fawcett, and Anne’s request put her on the spot. Still, she spoke up, saying to Nathan, "Nathan, eat some more."

At this point, no matter how dissatisfied she was with this son-in-law, she had no choice but to accept reality.

Fortunately, Nathan Fawcett was in a good mood today. He wasn’t contrary or intimidating, no matter what Mrs. Sutton said.

Anne Sutton and Nathan Fawcett weren’t in a hurry to leave.

Her mother was still recovering from a recent injury, so Anne took the opportunity to stay and chat with her.

The atmosphere in the Sutton home was markedly different from that in the Fawcett household.

When Mrs. Sutton spoke with Anne, her tone was gentle, her expression filled with motherly love.

They sat in the living room, watching TV.

Anne Sutton said, "Mom, from now on, you should think of Nathan as your own son."

Hearing this, Nathan Fawcett glanced at Anne, not understanding what she was trying to do.

’It wasn’t as if she didn’t know how afraid her own mother was of him!’

After listening, Mrs. Sutton looked at Nathan Fawcett and said gently, "Now that she’s with you, that makes us all family, doesn’t it? I’ve thought of him as a son for a while now."

After sitting down for a meal together, she realized Nathan wasn’t so frightening after all.

Mrs. Sutton said, "Nathan, are you tired? I know you’re not well. If you’re feeling tired, have Anne take you to a room to rest for a bit."

Her voice was filled with genuine concern, and she was no longer as stiff around Nathan as she had been before.

"Mm," Nathan Fawcett responded.

Anne Sutton said, "I’ll take you upstairs. You can rest in my room." frёewebnoѵel.ƈo๓

With that, she led Nathan Fawcett upstairs.

Anne’s room wasn’t very large, but it was exceptionally cozy, filled with traces of her childhood. Even her old schoolbag had been neatly put away for her by her mother.

Nathan Fawcett lay down on her bed. Gazing at all the old mementos, he asked, "Why do you have so much stuff in your room?"

Anne Sutton replied, "That’s my mom for you. She can’t bear to throw away anything I’ve ever used. She just washes it and puts it back."

"...Your mother is a very gentle person," Nathan Fawcett remarked. He truly admired Anne for that, and he was envious, too.

"She is," Anne Sutton said to Nathan Fawcett. "And if you wanted, she could be your mom, too. You could call her Mom, just like I do."

Nathan Fawcett looked at Anne, his gaze fixed on her, unwavering.

His stare made Anne a little nervous. She touched the tip of her nose. "Is there something on my face?"

Nathan Fawcett asked, "Did you bring me here because you feel sorry for me? Did you want to share some of your happiness with me?"

"Do you like it?" Anne asked. "I’m willing to share my happiness with you. Are you willing to accept it?"

She blinked, looking at him with anticipation.

Staring at her, Nathan Fawcett realized that he was.

He was willing to be with her, to become part of her family, to have a mother like hers.

But now...

He was no longer worthy.

Nathan Fawcett said to Anne, "In this world, wanting something isn’t enough to make it happen."

Anne, who had been sitting on the sofa, moved over to the edge of the bed when she heard him. She took his hand and said in a gentle voice, "Nathan, you know, when I was at the hospital, I met many patients. They were scared and anxious, too. But I believe that if you don’t give up, you’ll find a glimmer of hope. People have limitless potential sometimes. The most important thing is that you have to believe you’ll get better."

She didn’t know why, but perhaps it was because after getting to know him, she realized how much he had suffered. She just hoped that he could live for as long as possible, one day at a time.

Nathan Fawcett looked at her. "Why are you being so nice to me all of a sudden?"

"Weren’t you nice to me yesterday?" Anne countered. "You took me to meet your mother, hoping I’d get to see my idol. Even though it didn’t turn out well, I saw that you were sincere."

’Although she didn’t have any romantic feelings for this man, they were, at the very least, allies.’

’Her fate was tied to his.’

’She still hoped he could live a while longer.’

Nathan Fawcett looked at Anne and smiled. He suddenly thought that if he had met her earlier, his life might have been a little more joyful.

Seeing his smile, Anne’s lips curved into one of her own. "See? You’re actually quite handsome when you smile."
