Chapter 69: Chapter 69: Quite Unnecessary

"..." Anne Sutton rubbed her nose. ’I can’t believe he saw right through me.’

She denied it. "That’s not it. The Prescott men are eyeing me like prey right now, and I’m counting on you to have my back. If you were gone, who knows how they’d bully me."

’After all, Charles Prescott made it clear that as soon as Nathan Fawcett is gone, he’ll make me get an abortion. I don’t know what excuse I could possibly come up with then.’

Hearing this, Nathan Fawcett looked at her and said, "So that’s how it is. No wonder you came to comfort me. Who would ever genuinely care about someone like me?"

"..." Anne Sutton looked at Nathan Fawcett. Recalling what happened tonight, she couldn’t blame him for thinking that way.

She raised a hand and touched his face. "That Dr. Linden... she’s nothing like she is on TV. She actually scared me a little today."

Even though she never said a single harsh word, her disdain for Nathan Fawcett was so obvious.

’I could hardly believe that woman was Nathan Fawcett’s mother. I almost thought Stella Shields had been pulling my leg.’

Nathan Fawcett said, "I originally planned to take you to meet her because you like her. But from the looks of it, now she hates you as much as she hates me."

Especially since she knew Chairman Fawcett doted on Anne, Anna Linden couldn’t stand the sight of her now.

Anne Sutton asked, "You took me out today so I could meet her?"

This took Anne Sutton completely by surprise.

’And here I thought he was going to see Stella Shields and was just bringing me along!’

’I was being so petty.’

Nathan Fawcett looked at Anne Sutton. "Weren’t you still upset about what happened the other day? What, not angry anymore?"

Anne Sutton said, "So, you took me out to make it up to me?"

She hadn’t known the reason then, but she understood now. He hadn’t been targeting her that day.

He only had such a strong reaction because he had seen his mother.

She wasn’t that petty of a person.

’Still, it’s pretty surprising that a devil like Nathan Fawcett even knows how to comfort someone.’

Nathan Fawcett pressed his lips together and said nothing.

Anne Sutton brought over the porridge. "This is easy on the stomach. You ate so much spicy food today; drinking some of this will help you feel better."

Nathan Fawcett glanced at it but didn’t move. Anne Sutton picked up the spoon, scooped up some of the plain porridge, and held it to his lips.

Their relationship had been strained lately, so she hadn’t cooked for him at all.

Today was an exception.

Under her care, Nathan Fawcett ate a few mouthfuls of porridge.

’The warmth he never received from his mother, he was now finding from her.’

Anne Sutton had fed Nathan Fawcett about half the bowl of porridge when her phone chimed. She opened it to see a message from Charles Prescott: "What are you doing?"

"..."

Anne Sutton was speechless when she saw his message.

’It’s nighttime. Of course I’m at home!’

’And he’s asking what I’m doing?’

Still, Anne Sutton replied, "Your uncle is sick. I’m taking care of him."

"Sick?" Charles Prescott wrote back. "How is he?"

Hearing that Nathan Fawcett was sick, Charles Prescott seemed excited.

’He’s probably wishing Nathan Fawcett would just die already,’ Anne Sutton thought, knowing exactly what was on his mind.

Anne Sutton replied, "Not good. I’m busy right now."

Having dealt with him, she put her phone down.

Nathan Fawcett, who had been watching her from the side, asked, "Who are you messaging?"

Anne Sutton answered honestly, "Charles Prescott. He was asking how you are."

"What did you say?"

"I told him you’re not doing well," Anne Sutton said. "He seemed very hopeful."

"..."

Hearing this, a complex look entered Nathan Fawcett’s eyes.

He said, "Actually, you don’t need to worry too much. If I’m gone, my dad will take good care of you. With me gone, he’ll cherish the child in your belly even more and make sure to protect his grandchild. Don’t be fooled by how Miles Prescott acts; my dad has had him completely under his thumb all these years. What happened to your parents won’t happen again."

Anne Sutton looked at Nathan Fawcett, surprised that he had brought up her parents. "You believe he was behind my parents’ car accident?"

Nathan Fawcett’s gaze fell upon her. He looked at her, then raised a hand and stroked her head. "I’m not an idiot."

’I can’t believe it. Nathan Fawcett actually believes me,’ Anne Sutton thought.

’He actually believed what I said that day and didn’t just dismiss me as a lunatic!’

Nathan Fawcett seemed especially gentle tonight, and Anne Sutton found it almost unnerving.

They chatted for a little while longer before Chairman Fawcett returned. He had heard Nathan Fawcett was sick and came to see him. "Nathan, are you all right? I was worried sick when I heard from the doctor."

Nathan Fawcett looked at his father and said, "It’s nothing." freeweɓnovel.cøm

His attitude was cold, but he was genuinely unwell today, so his voice lacked its usual forcefulness.

Chairman Fawcett sat down. "Look at you. You can’t handle spicy food, so why did you eat so much of it?"

Nathan Fawcett didn’t explain why. He just looked at Chairman Fawcett and said, "I have something to tell you."

Chairman Fawcett said, "Go ahead."

Nathan Fawcett leaned back against his pillow, his face pale. "I know my days are numbered. After I’m gone, I hope you’ll take good care of her and the child."

He was, of course, referring to Anne Sutton and the baby in her womb.

Chairman Fawcett glanced at Anne Sutton, then said to Nathan Fawcett, "Don’t you worry. I’ll take good care of them. But Nathan, why are you saying these things now? You still have a long life ahead of you. Dad will find you the best doctors."

Nathan Fawcett looked at his father. "There’s no need. I’ve held on for too long already."

’There was no better doctor than Anna Linden. But it seemed he would never receive a mother’s love in this lifetime.’

Anne Sutton stood to the side, realizing he was truly arranging his final affairs. She found her own heart growing heavy.

Chairman Fawcett said, "This is all my fault! If only I hadn’t divorced your mother back then..."

"...Enough," Nathan Fawcett said. "It’s all in the past."

’What’s the use of talking about that now?’

Chairman Fawcett fell silent, afraid of angering Nathan Fawcett.

Nathan Fawcett said, "After I’m gone, keep a closer eye on my older brother and Charles Prescott. Don’t let them hurt Anne Sutton and the child."

Hearing Nathan Fawcett’s words, Chairman Fawcett glanced at Anne Sutton. He didn’t ask any questions, simply nodding. "Yes. Don’t worry. This is our family’s only heir. I will definitely take good care of him."

"Then I can rest easy," Nathan Fawcett said, then told Chairman Fawcett, "You can go now."

Chairman Fawcett said, "Nathan, do you despise your father that much? You won’t even say a few more words to me?"

’I just got here, I’ve barely even sat down, and I haven’t had a chance to properly connect with my son.’

"You can come back and cry after I’m dead. Right now, there’s no need."

He had no choice but to leave Nathan Fawcett’s room, clearly reluctant. fгeewёbnoѵel.cσm

Anne Sutton stared at Nathan Fawcett, speechless for a long moment. As he sipped his porridge, she watched him and finally asked, "How much time did the doctor say you have left?"
