Chapter 56: Chapter 56: Mother Injured
"That won’t do," said Sean Sutton. "Those are two separate things. We’ll stick to our own way of addressing each other. We’ve known each other for so many years."
Miles Prescott said, "I came here today mainly to congratulate you, Mr. Sutton! You’ve raised a good daughter who’s really done you proud. Now that she’s with Nathan, my son and I will have to look to you for support in the future!"
Sean Sutton was so flattered he was at a loss for words.
He said to Miles Prescott, "Actually, I know that for all these years, you and your son have been the ones supporting the Fawcett Family. You’re so capable, Mr. Prescott. With Anne in the Fawcett Family, we’ll be the ones entrusting her to your care."
Miles Prescott said, "She has Nathan to dote on her, so it’s not my place. But if one day, Nathan is truly gone, I promise I will treat her like my own kin and take good care of her."
As he finished speaking, he raised his glass. While he drank, his sharp eyes were fixed on Anne Sutton.
...
The meal was an ordeal for Anne Sutton.
Even though she just ate her food and didn’t join their conversation, she still felt extremely uncomfortable.
Unlike Charles Prescott, who would voice any dissatisfaction directly, Miles Prescott was not so straightforward.
But his way of speaking was actually even more aggravating.
After dinner, Anne Sutton didn’t see her family off; she just left on her own.
She had driven there.
When she reached the garage, she had just gotten into her car when Charles Prescott approached.
She froze when she saw him. ’I don’t know when he started following me.’ A sense of wariness crept over her. "What are you doing here?"
Charles Prescott’s face darkened. "What was that attitude you had with my father?"
His tone was hostile.
Anne Sutton looked at him and shot back, "What attitude? Wasn’t I perfectly polite?"
"Anne Sutton!" Charles Prescott had lost his usual composure. "Don’t think you’re so great just because you have Nathan Fawcett protecting you! My father has done too much for the Fawcett Group; Chairman Fawcett won’t fire him. Even if your son becomes the heir one day, you’ll still have to wait for him to grow up, won’t you? For years to come, my dad will be the one calling the shots in the Fawcett Family. Do you understand?"
"No need to come and gloat. I get it." freewebnøvel.coɱ
Seeing that his words weren’t getting through to her, Charles Prescott said, "Do you think I came looking for you to teach you a lesson for my father? I’m worried about you!"
"You’re worried about me?" Anne Sutton said. "You could have fooled me. If I remember correctly, the very first thing you said when you came to my car was to accuse me of being impolite to your father!"
Charles Prescott snorted. "Believe it or not! I think it’s a goddamn miracle myself that after everything you’ve done to me, I’m still worried about your safety. For your own sake, I hope you’ll seriously consider my advice: find a way to get rid of the child. Your safety can only be guaranteed if there is no child."
"..." Anne Sutton stared at him. "Fine. You’ve said what you came to say. You can go now."
’I don’t want to hear a single word he says.’
’He doesn’t even care, yet he insists on putting on this deeply affectionate act!’
’This isn’t the clean-cut, decisive Charles Prescott I know at all!’
Charles Prescott looked at her and said, "I’ll get a ride back with you."
"Why?" Anne Sutton looked at him. "Are you trying to make Nathan Fawcett misunderstand our relationship again?"
Charles Prescott looked at her, thought for a moment, and finally opened the car door and got out.
...
Even so, on the drive back, Anne Sutton had the feeling that he was following her in his own car, tailing her like a persistent ghost.
She had just parked her car at the gate when she heard a maid greet him, "Welcome back, Mr. Prescott."
’He’s seriously sick in the head!’
’Following me this whole time!’
Anne Sutton locked her car and walked toward the house. She had just stepped into the living room, sat down, and taken a sip of water when her phone buzzed. She glanced at it and saw a message from Sharon Sutton: "Sis, we were in a car accident on the way back. Mom and Dad are both injured. You need to come take a look."
Anne Sutton was so startled the cup slipped from her hand, spilling onto the carpet...
’A car accident?’
’How could this happen?’
She recalled Charles Prescott following her the whole way home, and the nagging feeling that he’d been uneasy about something.
...
Her seat barely warm, Anne Sutton shot back to her feet in alarm. The butler came down from the second floor and said, "Madam."
Anne Sutton said, "I have to go out. Please tell Mr. Fawcett."
"But didn’t you just get back?"
"My parents were in a car accident. I have to go check on them."
Hearing this, the butler froze for a second. "Is it serious?"
Anne Sutton didn’t have time to answer. She was already in her car, pulling away.
On the road, she initiated a voice call with Sharon Sutton. "How are Mom and Dad?"
"Mom’s injuries are a little more serious, but she’s going to be fine. Thankfully, Uncle Prescott was there and helped us contact a doctor right away. It was terrifying!"
’Uncle Prescott...’
Hearing his name, Anne Sutton grew even more certain that something was amiss.
...
Nathan Fawcett was lying in bed. When he saw the butler enter, he asked, "Where’s Anne Sutton? She’s not back yet?"
’She just went out for dinner while I took a nap. I figured she’d be back by the time I woke up, but it’s been dark for ages now.’
’That woman is getting more and more audacious!’
The butler said, "Madam did come back a moment ago. However, she heard her family was in a car accident, so she went out again to check on them."
"..." Upon hearing this, Nathan Fawcett opened his eyes and looked at the butler. "Is it serious?"
The butler replied, "She seemed very anxious, so I’m not certain. I can make some inquiries with the hospital."
...
Anne Sutton arrived at the hospital and quickly found her parents’ room.
Her mother was lying on the hospital bed, her head wrapped in gauze. Anne Sutton gasped when she saw her. "Mom."
Tears instantly welled up in her eyes and streamed down her face.
’I thought I wasn’t afraid of anything, but my family is the exception!’
Sean Sutton was injured too, but only his arm, which was already bandaged. As for Sharon Sutton, she was the luckiest of them all, having only suffered a minor scrape.
Seeing Anne Sutton enter, Mrs. Sutton looked at Sharon Sutton and said, "You must have been the one who called your sister. I told you it was nothing serious, yet you still called her over."
Thinking about how her daughter had married a man like Nathan Fawcett for the family’s sake, Mrs. Sutton was terrified of adding to Anne Sutton’s burdens with more family problems.
’The accident wasn’t serious, so I didn’t want her to find out.’
’Who knew Sharon would let it slip?’
Sharon Sutton said, "I was just worried about you guys. I was terrified."
Miles Prescott walked in, followed by the hospital director. He said to Anne Sutton, "Anne, you’re here. Your parents are fine. I’ve already instructed the hospital staff to take good care of them."
Anne Sutton looked up at Miles Prescott and asked coldly, "What are you doing here?"
’It had to be him!’
’Her intuition screamed that he was connected to this incident.’
’Is he warning me because I was rude to him?’
Miles Prescott said, "I was taking the same route home as your parents. I happened to see the accident, so I called for help and had them brought to the hospital."
