Chapter 54: Chapter 54: Charles Prescott’s Father
The butler approached and informed Nathan Fawcett, "Mr. Miles Prescott has returned. He is waiting for you."
Anne Sutton, standing beside Nathan Fawcett, heard the butler’s words loud and clear.
’Miles Prescott. Charles Prescott’s father.’
’He was a longtime friend of my father’s. Well, "friend" might be a stretch. After the Prescott family became wealthy, they weren’t that close anymore. It was mostly my father trying to stay on his good side.’
’He hadn’t been around at all since I married into the Fawcett family.’
’I’d heard he was away for work, but I never thought...’
’He would come back today!’
After all, he was an elder who had watched her grow up. Anne Sutton couldn’t help but feel a little intimidated.
Nathan Fawcett said to the butler, "Have the staff bring everything inside."
"Yes," replied the butler.
After giving the order, Nathan walked through the door.
Anne Sutton followed behind him, feeling a little anxious. frёewebnoѵel.ƈo๓
Miles Prescott was sitting on the sofa. When he saw Nathan Fawcett walk in, he immediately stood up. "Nathan."
He’d always been a rather aloof man, at least in Anne Sutton’s memory. But seeing Nathan Fawcett now, he acted as if he were greeting his own brother.
Nathan Fawcett said, "When did you return, Brother?"
"This afternoon," Miles Prescott said. "I came to see you as soon as I returned. While I was away these past few days, I was most worried about your health. I brought back a lot of nutritional supplements for you. I don’t know if they’ll be of any use, but I hope they can help you build up your strength."
With that, he gestured to a pile of gifts on the table.
Nathan Fawcett glanced at them. "Thank you for the gifts, Brother."
"It’s the least I could do," Miles Prescott said.
He then turned his gaze to Anne Sutton. "Anne, it’s been a long time."
He was an elder she had known for years, after all. The moment they met, she felt that familiar sense of intimidation.
"Hello, Mr. Prescott," Anne Sutton said.
Miles Prescott said, "You used to call me Uncle Prescott when I visited your family."
Miles Prescott was actually several years younger than Anne Sutton’s own father.
He was quite young when he had Charles Prescott, only about sixteen or seventeen.
Combined with how well he maintained himself, he looked very young for his age.
Hearing him bring up the past, Anne Sutton said, "As you said, Mr. Prescott, that was a long time ago."
’Now that I’m Nathan Fawcett’s wife, I can’t possibly call him ’Uncle’ like I used to.’
’Wouldn’t that just mess up the family hierarchy?’
Miles Prescott said, "As for what happened between you and Charles, that was my failure as a father. I didn’t manage him well. But it all worked out. Now that you’ve married Nathan, the marriage alliance between our families hasn’t been broken, after all."
Hearing this, Anne Sutton glanced at Miles Prescott and said, "You never wanted me to marry him in the first place, Mr. Prescott. So I suppose this resolves a long-standing issue for you, doesn’t it?"
Nathan Fawcett, sitting to one side, glanced at Anne Sutton.
’Miles Prescott never speaks so directly; he prefers being passive-aggressive. She, on the other hand, isn’t holding back at all.’
Miles Prescott was quite the actor. Even after Anne Sutton called him out on his past feelings, his expression didn’t falter. He simply said, "How could you say that? Nathan has always had very high standards. The fact that he chose you proves you’re truly remarkable. My son was a letdown for not marrying you; it’s his loss. I hear you’re already carrying Nathan’s child, and I am genuinely happy. Nathan’s health has been poor, and now he’s finally going to have a child. The Fawcett family will finally have an heir!"
’If Charles Prescott was good at putting on an act, then his father was an absolute master.’
’You couldn’t get a read on his true feelings about this baby at all!’
Nathan Fawcett looked at Miles Prescott and said, "Thank you for your concern, Brother. You just got back today, so you should get some rest. I need to rest as well."
"Where have you been?" Miles Prescott asked, looking at Nathan Fawcett curiously.
"We went out for a stroll and bought a few things for the baby," Nathan Fawcett replied.
Miles Prescott smiled. "That’s wonderful. Nathan’s about to be a father. But... you shouldn’t tire yourself out. For something like this, just say the word and I’ll take care of it for you."
Nathan Fawcett looked at Miles Prescott. Although Miles was being very warm, Nathan remained unmoved. His voice was stiff as he said, "Then thank you, Brother."
"We’re all family. Why be so formal with me?" Miles Prescott said. "Without your father, I wouldn’t be where I am today. You were his most beloved son. Looking after you in his stead is what Charles and I ought to do."
Nathan Fawcett said nothing.
He wasn’t one to smile much on any given day.
And he remained expressionless while speaking with Miles Prescott.
The contrast made Miles Prescott seem all the more affable.
Seeing that Nathan Fawcett had nothing more to say, Miles Prescott stood up. "I’ve taken up enough of your time today, Nathan. I’ll go get some rest now. Let’s have a meal together when we have the chance."
"Show him out," Nathan Fawcett said.

Miles Prescott asked, "How is Nathan’s health, really?"
The butler replied, "The doctors say he’s in very poor condition."
"Those useless hacks," Miles Prescott said, his face a mask of concern. "Alright, that’s far enough. Go back and look after him."
As soon as Charles Prescott arrived, the butler told him his father had returned.
He walked over and happened to run into Miles Prescott, who was just on his way back from Nathan Fawcett’s rooms. "Dad."
The man, who moments ago had been as warm as a spring breeze in front of Nathan Fawcett, slapped Charles Prescott across the face the instant he saw him.
Henry Underwood jumped at the sight and rushed to steady Charles Prescott. "Mr. Prescott."
Miles Prescott glared at Charles Prescott. "I told you long ago to cut ties with her, and now look at this mess... you’ve gone and gotten her pregnant! Is this how you handle things? How did I end up with such a useless son?"
"When Chairman Fawcett first said he wanted to find a woman to bear Nathan Fawcett a child, I had to put in a good word for you for ages before he finally agreed to let you handle it."
"If they had found someone themselves, we wouldn’t be facing this threat now."
"But I never imagined that in the end, the woman would turn out to be Anne Sutton!"
"It’s bad enough that she’s disgraced the Prescott family, but now, because of her history with you, she’s actively working against us."
Charles Prescott said, "This was my mistake. I originally chose Sharon Sutton. You know how easy Sean Sutton is to control. I never expected..."
"Never expected?" Miles Prescott scoffed. "We’ve slaved away for the Fawcett Group for years! Without us, where would this company be today? Nathan Fawcett does nothing, and now he gets to pop out some convenient son to become the heir!"
The very thought felt like it could give him a heart attack.
Everything. All of it ruined because of Charles Prescott.
Charles Prescott said, "I’m still talking to Anne about it. She’ll change her mind."
"Talking?" Miles Prescott clearly had no faith in him. "How are you going to ’talk’ to her? You can’t even handle a single woman! The only reason she’s like this today is because you spoiled her! If you had just broken off the engagement earlier, none of this would have happened! Stay out of it from now on. I have my own methods. Regardless, that child..."
