Charles Prescott sized her up. She hadn’t been here for a while, so he’d assumed he had won, that he’d never have to see Anne Sutton with Nathan Fawcett again.
He had never imagined she would return, and pregnant no less!
He said to Anne Sutton, "Are you this happy to be carrying his child?"
His voice was laced with a sense of loss.
His own fiancée had left him—without him even agreeing to it—gotten together with another man, and was now carrying that man’s child. And she was so happy about it.
Anne Sutton said, "I suppose."
"Congratulations!" Charles Prescott said. "Your child is going to become the heir of the Fawcett family."
"Congratulations to you too, Mr. Prescott," Anne Sutton said, mimicking his passive-aggressive tone. "If all goes according to plan, you’re about to be ousted."
’He’s no longer the sole heir of the Fawcett Group. Let’s see how smug he can be now!’
Charles Prescott sat on the sofa, staring at Anne Sutton, his gaze dark and intense. "Anne, I’ve been thinking lately about how we ended up like this. I like you so much... I haven’t had a single happy day since you left. But you... you seem so happy by his side."
"Can you just stop?" Anne Sutton said. "Listening to you makes me want to puke."
Charles Prescott said, "But since you’re so happy, I feel I should give you a reminder. You’ve always felt that I was unfaithful, that I was just fooling around with other women. But have I ever let anyone bully you over the years? Nathan Fawcett, on the other hand... he’s different! He and Stella Shields are childhood sweethearts. He went to see her first thing this morning! Now that you’re pregnant, you’ll soon realize that to him, you’re nothing but a tool for bearing children."
"..." Anne Sutton heard Charles Prescott’s words and replied with a shrug, "I don’t love him, so what do I care if he finds ten other women? All I want right now is this child. Once the baby is born, I won’t have to put up with you or let you bully me anymore."

Charles Prescott actually chuckled after hearing what Anne Sutton said. "So, you being this angry with me just proves you still have feelings for me, right?"
"I don’t!" Anne Sutton hadn’t expected her words to give him an opening.
Charles Prescott said, "Anne, I knew it. We were together for so many years; there’s no way you don’t have feelings for me. Hearing you say it yourself makes me very happy!"

Charles Prescott had barely finished speaking when Nathan Fawcett walked in, the butler at his side. Nathan glanced at Charles Prescott, his expression complicated. "You’re here bright and early."
Charles Prescott didn’t seem the least bit guilty upon seeing Nathan Fawcett. He simply said, "I heard Anne was pregnant, so I came to pay a visit. Congratulations, Uncle. You have an heir!"
Nathan Fawcett didn’t acknowledge the congratulations. His gaze landed on Anne Sutton.
He had been at the door while the two of them were talking.
He had heard every word of her conversation with Charles Prescott.
Nathan Fawcett said to Charles Prescott, "If you’re done, you can leave now."
Charles Prescott glanced at Anne Sutton, then walked out.
After he left, Anne Sutton felt Nathan Fawcett’s eyes on her. ’He must have heard that conversation.’
Anne Sutton asked, "You heard all that?"
’Running away from the problem wouldn’t solve anything. It’s better to explain things clearly than to let him misunderstand.’
Nathan Fawcett listened to her and replied, "Yes."
Anne Sutton said, "He was deliberately twisting my words. I have absolutely no feelings for him. He can’t stand seeing me with you, so he’s trying to drive a wedge between us."
Nathan Fawcett heard her out, then walked over to her.
He was taller than her, so he had to tilt his head down slightly to look at her. "You don’t have to explain to me. I don’t mind whatever is between you and Charles Prescott. Even if I’m gone one day, it’s your freedom to get back together with him."
"..." Anne Sutton looked at Nathan Fawcett in disbelief. ’This doesn’t sound like something he would say at all.’
Nathan looked at her, his gaze gentle. "As long as the baby is born safely, I’ll be satisfied. We only got together for the baby’s sake, didn’t we?"
’His words were so reasonable. Anne had been terrified that if he got jealous, he’d never let it go.’
’But he was being so agreeable?’
The butler, who had been standing to the side, had also been worried. He breathed a sigh of relief when he heard Nathan Fawcett’s words.
Anne Sutton said to Nathan Fawcett, "I’ll go make you something to eat. I have to get to work after."

After having a meal with Nathan Fawcett at home, Anne Sutton’s phone rang. The call was from her mother, Mrs. Sutton. "Anne."
Anne Sutton asked, "Mom, what’s up?"
"Chairman Fawcett had someone deliver a lot of gifts to our house. He also invited us to the Fawcett family home for dinner tomorrow night."
’In all the time Anne had been with Nathan Fawcett, Chairman Fawcett had always been aloof and superior. But now that she was pregnant, his entire attitude had shifted.’

Anne Sutton said, "Then you should all come over."
Mrs. Sutton said, "Now that you’re pregnant, it’s clear his family really wants this baby."
Anne Sutton said, "I told you before, I was going to have this baby no matter what. With this baby, I’ll no longer be at the mercy of Charles Prescott."
Mrs. Sutton said, "But I... I can’t help but worry. You’ve thought of everything for our family, but what about you? What’s the real story with Nathan Fawcett’s health? Is he dying?"
