Chapter 22: Chapter 22: Are You Interested in Me?
After he finished speaking, Charles Prescott took a box of pills from his pocket. "These are birth control pills. I want you to put them in with your sister’s regular medication."
Sharon Sutton stared at Charles Prescott in disbelief. "How could I do that? If she finds out I did this without her permission, she’ll be furious."
Trying to persuade her sister was one thing, but doing something like this was just wrong.
Charles said, "Sharon, I’m only asking you to do this because I love your sister. She’s upset with me right now and won’t listen to reason. But everything I’m doing is for our future together. By doing this, you’re helping me, and you’re helping her." fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com
Sharon said, "I still can’t! This is absolutely wrong! I can’t do it."
No matter how naive she was, she was old enough to know this kind of thing was wrong.
Seeing her refuse him so bluntly, Charles’s expression darkened. "Are you sure? If you don’t agree, then I’ll have no choice but to tell your family about your boyfriend. How old are you, anyway? Already getting a boyfriend! The reason you refused to marry Nathan Fawcett was because of him, wasn’t it? And that’s why your sister had to marry him instead. You pushed her into a pit of fire, and here you are, living your life without a care in the world."
"I didn’t!" Sharon was choked with anger at Charles’s accusation.
’That’s not what I was thinking at all.’
’I just want to be with the person I love!’
Charles said, "Listen to me, don’t worry. Just do as I say. You’ll be helping your sister, and I’ll help you too. What does that boyfriend of yours do?"
"He’s just a regular college student, still looking for a job."
"His family isn’t well-off, are they?" He could tell from the young man’s clothes that he was just an ordinary person. This was also why Sharon had to hide her relationship from her family.
Sharon looked at Charles, a little surprised. ’He knows that, too.’
Confident that his guess was correct, Charles said, "Listen to me. I’ll arrange a good job for him at my company. That way, it won’t be so embarrassing when you bring him home in the future."
"Really?" Hearing this, Sharon was tempted.
She was afraid her parents would disapprove because her boyfriend’s family was too poor, which was why she had to hide him from them.
Charles nodded. "Of course."
Sharon looked at the medicine he had given her and said, "Are you sure these are just birth control pills?"
"Of course. You can go get them checked if you want. It’s not like I’m trying to harm your sister, am I?"
Sharon said, "Okay."
Seeing that she had agreed, Charles let out a sigh of relief.
’Talking to Anne Sutton nicely was pointless. To prevent her from having a child and ruining my future, this was the only method I could come up with.’
...
「That afternoon」
Anne Sutton was at the hospital when Sharon came to see her. "Sis."
Seeing her, Anne was a little surprised. "What are you doing here?"
"I was free, so I thought I’d come see you," Sharon said. "Oh, right, your medicine was at home, so I brought it for you."
Anne used to live at home, but now that she had moved in with Nathan Fawcett, many of her things were still there.
This was her regular medication, which she hadn’t brought with her this time.
Anne glanced at Sharon and reached out to take the pill bottle. "Thanks."
Sharon asked, "Has work been tough on you lately?"
Anne replied, "It’s fine. I’m used to it."
Sharon said, "By the way, Sis... could you... not have Nathan Fawcett’s baby?"
Anne had been a bit sensitive lately. Her parents were constantly trying to persuade her, and her father would call her too, but she never picked up when she knew they wanted to talk about this.
She looked at Sharon and asked, "What, did Dad send you?"
Although she doted on her younger sister, it still made Anne uncomfortable that Sharon had made a special trip just to tell her this.
Seeing that Anne was angry, Sharon said, "No, no... I just saw Mom and Dad talking about it recently. They all say Nathan Fawcett doesn’t have long to live. Sis, maybe you should just listen to Dad."
"Listen to Dad?" Anne scoffed. "Forget it, Sharon. You’re too young, so I don’t blame you. You should go home. I have a lot on my plate right now. Just focus on your studies and don’t worry about family matters."
"Okay!" Sharon looked at Anne and realized it was just as Charles had said: she just saw her as a child and wouldn’t listen to her advice.
...
「After work」
Anne Sutton went straight home.
Nathan Fawcett seemed to be in a good mood today. He was watering the flowers with a watering can.
When the butler saw her return, he said, "Ma’am."
Anne walked over, looked at Nathan, and asked, "Honey, what are you doing?"
Nathan lifted his head and gave her a cold glance. "None of your business."
’I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve tried to be nice only to get the cold shoulder.’
But Anne didn’t hold it against him.
’Who would get angry at the man who’s going to leave them a billion-dollar fortune?’
’He only has two months left, at most. For these two months, he can act as unreasonable as he wants.’
Anne said, "Well, I’m going to make you dinner then. Wait for me, okay!"
With that, she walked through the door.
Only after she had gone inside did Nathan raise his head and watch her retreating back.
The butler, who was standing to the side, looked at Nathan and said, "Sir, Ms. Sutton is actually quite interesting. Why don’t you like her?"
"Interesting?" Nathan lowered his head, his mind perfectly clear. "She used to be with Charles Prescott. Look at his circumstances, and then look at mine. She’s only nice to me because I’m useful to her. What, you really think she’s interested in me?"
’She puts on such a convincing act that even the butler is starting to believe it. But I know better.’
’I’m just a hot-tempered man on the verge of death.’
’How could Anne Sutton possibly like me?’
At this thought, Nathan grew agitated.
He threw the watering can down and stormed through the door.
The butler followed behind him.
Anne finished making dinner and sat down at the dining table. She didn’t eat out anymore, preferring to come home and eat with Nathan. Her presence was gradually filling the house with the warmth of a home.
Nathan looked at her and said, "I heard you went to see Charles Prescott the other night."
Anne bit on her chopsticks. ’I can’t believe he knows about that, too.’
’Wasn’t he asleep then?’
Anne didn’t panic. "He said he had something to discuss, so I went down. We were just in the courtyard, not trying to hide from anyone. My conscience is clear, so I have nothing to be afraid of."
Nathan looked at her, noticing that she did indeed seem very open as she spoke, not at all like someone with a guilty conscience.
He didn’t ask any more questions.
Anne looked at the man and suddenly started laughing.
Nathan asked, "What are you laughing at?"
Anne teased, "You’re so cold to me every day, yet you’re secretly so concerned about me. Are you interested in me or something?"
"..." Hearing her words, Nathan scoffed. "You’re dreaming!"
