Chapter 161: Chapter 161: Still Want to Fight for It

Anne Sutton glanced at Sean Sutton. "Let’s see how long you can hide this."

With that, she turned and left.

Her original plan was to speak with her father and then tell Sharon, but she just wasn’t in the mood anymore.

...

When Nathan Fawcett came home that evening, he saw Anne Sutton sitting alone by the window.

The living room was hot, yet she was sitting on the sofa without having taken off her coat.

Nathan Fawcett looked at her. "What are you thinking about? Aren’t you hot?"

Anne Sutton looked up at him. "You’re home from work?"

Nathan Fawcett nodded. "Yeah. Where’s Ian?"

"I don’t know." Anne only remembered Ian now that Nathan had mentioned him.

"You don’t know?" Nathan Fawcett gave her a meaningful look, then went upstairs to check on Ian. He found the boy lying in bed. Ian hadn’t taken his afternoon medicine, so his cold had worsened again.

Nathan Fawcett carried him downstairs. Seeing Anne still sitting there, he said, "Unbelievable. You come home and don’t even spare a glance for the child."

Anne was in a terrible mood, so she had just been sitting there in a daze since getting home. When she saw Nathan come down holding Ian and then lose his temper with her, she couldn’t help but feel a little wronged.

But ultimately, the child’s well-being was more important.

"How is Ian?"

"How is he?" Nathan Fawcett retorted. "He didn’t take his medicine, and now his fever is back. You really don’t care about this child at all! Anne Sutton, you truly don’t deserve to be a mother."

When it came to the child, Nathan Fawcett was always dead serious.

He had decided to give her another chance to care for the child precisely because he saw how well she and Ian were getting along.

He never expected that she would come home, get wrapped up in her own problems, and not show the slightest bit of concern for the boy.

The thought that Ian only had his father to care for him left Nathan feeling deeply disappointed.

He said to Anne, "You never cared about my child in the past. You wanted to abort my child when you were pregnant. And now you can’t even stand Ian, is that it?"

"It’s not like that," Anne said. "I just got home. I’m just in a bad mood."

"A bad mood?" Nathan shot back. "Has there ever been a time you’ve come home and Ian didn’t come looking for you? He doesn’t show up today, and you don’t even think to check on him? The way you are, you probably wouldn’t even notice if he wandered off and got lost!"

"..." Anne looked at Nathan and blurted out rashly, "He’s not my child anyway. Taking care of him is your responsibility, not mine."

"What did you say?" Her words stunned Nathan for a moment. He stared at Anne, his eyes filled with disappointment. "Say that again."

"..." Anne fell silent, knowing she had gone too far.

But she was in a truly terrible mood today.

Just then, Ian, cradled in Nathan’s arms, woke up.

He opened his eyes, looked at Nathan, and said, "Dad, you’re home!"

Nathan sat down with Ian, wrapped a blanket around him, and asked, "Why didn’t you take your medicine?"

"I forgot," Ian said. "I’m all better now."

That’s how it often is when children are sick; they seem fine during the day, only for things to get worse at night.

The butler walked over, and Nathan said, "Go get his clothes. I’m taking him to the hospital to get an IV."

Seeing how sick the boy was, Anne couldn’t help but worry about Ian. She knew a trip to the hospital would be a major hassle. She spoke up, telling Nathan, "He doesn’t need an IV. We have medicine at home. After he takes it, I’ll cook him something. An IV will just make him uncomfortable."

’After all, he’s had his fair share of IVs since he got sick.’

’The backs of his hands have been pricked so many times.’

Nathan said, "Do you really think I’d still believe you now?"

Anne looked at Nathan, hearing him say such things to her all because of the child. "That’s right," she said. "You won’t believe me. So be it. It doesn’t matter if you believe me or not."

’The child she had with him was already gone!’

’Now he has a child with someone else, and she’s trying not to mind, but in the end, everything is still her fault!’

’It’s always her fault, anyway. She’s the one who’s no good!’

A moment later, Nathan carried the child out the door.

The butler looked at Anne and asked, "Ma’am, aren’t you going with them?"

"What would I go for? I’d just be in his way. When have I ever come home and not cared about Ian? It was just today..."

At this, Anne glanced at the butler. "Your master and I may be legally married, but what am I to him in his heart? He was alive this whole time and didn’t even tell me. In his eyes, am I just a burden?"

Hearing her words, the butler quickly said, "No, no, of course not. The master only has you in his heart. There hasn’t been anyone else by his side all these years."

"You sure know what to say," Anne retorted. "If there’s been no one else, then where did Ian come from? Did he spring out of a rock?"

’Besides, Ian and Nathan look so much alike. One glance and you can tell he’s his biological son.’

The butler listened to Anne’s words and thought to himself, ’But Ian *is* your son!’

’It’s just...’

’What happened back then was just too catastrophic!’

’Anne has been in so much pain over the child for all these years; the butler didn’t dare say anything rashly.’

’Besides, Nathan clearly had no intention of telling her right now. He didn’t dare meddle.’

Seeing the butler’s conflicted expression, Anne said, "You should go with them."

’A trip to the hospital is never a simple affair.’

’And the butler was always by Nathan’s side.’

’If he wasn’t there, Nathan would surely be overwhelmed trying to handle everything alone.’

The butler said, "Very well. Please take care of yourself, Ma’am."

With that, he walked out.

Anne sat on the sofa, and the more she thought, the more pointless everything seemed.

’It was as if there was no happiness to be found in life!’

’If not for her desire to see Charles Prescott get what he deserved, she felt she might as well just give up and die.’

She suddenly became aware of the heat again and took off her coat, but she didn’t go to bed.

After what Nathan had said to her, she was too agitated to sleep.

On top of that, she thought of Ian. It wasn’t that she had no feelings for him.

’Even if he wasn’t her own child!’

It was just that seeing her parents today—thinking about her father having another child while her mother was being played for a fool at home—had made her project her feelings onto her own situation.

That was why she had said those things to Nathan.

She went into the kitchen and, just as she’d offered, made something for Ian to eat, adding some medicinal herbs.

Besides being a doctor, she was also an excellent cook. Sometimes, a medicinal meal could work wonders.

It could be more effective than daily shots and medicine.

Besides, Ian was so young; taking too much medication wasn’t good for him.

Once the food was ready, Anne headed to the hospital.

She had expected to find only Nathan and the butler at the hospital, so she was surprised to run into Stella and Justin Shields.

They were also there to see Ian.

After all, Stella had previously offended Nathan because of the situation with Anne.

Now, he still wanted to help Stella fight for the lead role in *Evening Face*.
