Chapter 137: Chapter 137: Return to Her Side
The butler nodded and chuckled. "Yes, it’s all booked. It seems you’re missing the young master, sir."
Nathan Fawcett heard him, but it was Anne Sutton on his mind.
’Why do I keep thinking about that woman!’
During his two days back in Veridia, he hadn’t even slept well without her by his side. He found it strange himself.
Nathan Fawcett had just stepped out when he saw Anna Linden standing at the entrance.
Stella Shields was with her.
Seeing his mother, Nathan Fawcett froze for a moment before walking over. "Mom, what are you doing here?"
Anna Linden looked at Nathan Fawcett. "Where are you off to?"
"I just finished a meeting," Nathan replied. "There’s something else I need to do."
"I heard you went to Westhaven recently," Anna Linden said.
When his mother brought this up, Nathan knew something was off. She was usually preoccupied with the hospital and never paid any attention to the company’s business.
For her to suddenly show up like this, she must have heard something.
"Yes," Nathan Fawcett said. "I had some business over there."
"What business?" Anna Linden’s expression turned serious as she looked at him. "I heard you plan to take your place in the Fawcett Family. You want to take back that man’s company?"
"I am his only son," Nathan Fawcett replied. "What’s wrong with me inheriting the Fawcett Group?"
Anna Linden pointed at him. "Who says you’re his son? You are *my* son, which means you have nothing to do with him! You can’t possibly... you can’t possibly still be attached to your old identity, can you?"
Nathan Fawcett looked at his mother. He knew she and his father had a terrible relationship.
"I am your son, but I am also his son," Nathan said. "There’s no one left in the Fawcett Family. I can’t just ignore these things."
’If he washed his hands of it now, Anne Sutton wouldn’t be able to survive in Westhaven.’
"I forbid you from going!" Anna Linden declared. "I nursed you back to health, not so you could go clean up that man’s messes! Isn’t everything the Linden Family has given you enough? We don’t need what they have. You should have listened to me and severed all ties with the Fawcett Family."
Nathan looked at his mother. "Ever since I recovered... you’ve treated me as Ethan Linden. But am I Ethan Linden? I’ve been living his life, using his name... but he’s dead."
"What did you just say?" His words had clearly enraged Anna Linden.
Anna Linden’s face instantly darkened.
She stared at Nathan Fawcett, her voice a low warning. "Say that again."
"I’ve already made my decision about the Fawcett Family’s affairs," Nathan said. "No matter what you say, I’m going to handle it."
"If you insist on going to the Fawcett Family, then from this day on, you are no son of mine," Anna Linden said.
"Whatever makes you happy." Nathan refused to back down.
He was going back to Westhaven, and no one could stop him.
Stella Shields, watching the scene unfold, said, "Ethan, don’t be like this! You’ll break Auntie’s heart."
Nathan Fawcett shot Stella Shields a look, said nothing, and walked away.
Anna Linden couldn’t believe it. He hadn’t even looked at her. After everything she’d said, he hadn’t listened and had just walked out.
Her hands trembled with rage.
She turned to Stella Shields. "Maybe I shouldn’t have saved him! I should have just let him die instead of nursing him back to health! He’s not my Ethan. He’s not him at all! If he were Ethan, he would never do anything to make me this angry!"
Stella Shields looked at Anna Linden and said, "Auntie, don’t worry. He won’t leave you. Hasn’t Ethan been wonderful these past few years? He’s always been so obedient. This is probably because of Anne Sutton. He’s just been influenced by her. I’ll go talk to him. He’ll come back to his senses."
...
’She’d heard from her brother that Nathan Fawcett was with Anne Sutton, but she hadn’t paid it any mind.’
’She knew how much Nathan cared about his mother’s opinion.’
’But she never expected him to dare defy his mother’s wishes, even after she came here to say all this to him!’
’He was never like this before. To do this for a woman like Anne Sutton... has he gone mad?’
...
Anne Sutton was at the hospital.
A patient was having a difficult delivery, so she had been busy all afternoon.
By the time she finished and came out, the sky had already grown dark.
’She thought of Ian and couldn’t help but worry. He was home all by himself. Was he scared?’
Anne Sutton quickly changed her clothes and hurried out of the hospital.
Ever since Ian was in her life, she always rushed home right after work, worried that something might happen if she got back too late.
But just as she stepped out of the hospital, she saw Ian.
Nathan Fawcett was holding him, and he looked absolutely adorable.
Anne Sutton froze when she saw Nathan Fawcett.
’He said he’d be back in two days, and he actually came back!’
Although she had been desperately hoping he would return soon because of what happened with Charles Prescott, now that he was actually here, she felt a strange sense of apprehension.
Anne Sutton walked up to him. The few short steps felt like an eternity.
When she finally stopped in front of him, she looked at his handsome face, but couldn’t think of a single thing to say.
The butler, standing to the side, smiled. "Good evening, Madam."
Anne Sutton acknowledged the butler before turning to Nathan Fawcett. "You’re back already?"
Ian looked at Anne Sutton. "Mommy, are you just getting off work now? Daddy and I waited for you for a long time."
"I had a surgery today, so I’m late," Anne said.
She rubbed her lower back, which was aching terribly.
The butler opened the car door, and Anne Sutton got in.
Nathan Fawcett followed, still holding Ian.
Once seated, Anne Sutton looked at the man beside her. "Did you finish up everything in Veridia?"
"Mhm."
Looking at him, Anne felt a sudden impulse and reached out to link her arm with his.
He glanced at the woman now clinging to him. "What are you doing?"
"I’m tired," Anne said. "I just want to lean on you for a bit."
He looked at her, so openly affectionate. The moment she wrapped her arm around his, he felt his whole world light up.
’To be honest, he hadn’t been in a good mood today.’
’It was probably because of what Anna Linden had said—that if he came back here, she would disown him.’
’That mother of his was capable of abandoning him at any moment.’
’That was why, for the past few years, he had been careful never to do anything that would make her angry.’
’Now that she had said it, abandoning him was a real possibility.’
’And yet, he had come back anyway!’
’Because he knew if he didn’t return, if he left Anne Sutton here alone, the Prescott men would bully her to death.’
’And with the current situation, there would be no one from the Fawcett Group to back her up.’
’Not coming back would have been the same as pushing her into hell.’
’So, no matter what, he had to return to her side.’
Anne Sutton, still holding his arm, felt him put his own arm around her and press a gentle kiss to the top of her head.
Anne Sutton looked up at him. ’Did he... did he just kiss me?’
Seeing her staring at him, Nathan said, "Aren’t you tired? Rest for a while. I’ll wake you when we get home."
Anne looked at Nathan. "Actually, I dreamed about you last night."
Nathan Fawcett raised an eyebrow. ’So she dreams about me?’
’At least she has a heart.’
"What did you dream about?" Nathan asked.
"I dreamed that you went to Veridia," Anne said, "and when your mom found out you wanted to be with me, she forbade you from coming back."
That’s why she was so surprised to see him today.
