Chapter 219: Chapter 219

Elara POV

“That’s six,” I say, looking at Orson, who is sitting beside me on the floor. “It’s done.”

“I don’t understand,” he frowns.

“We brought six firebombs,” I explain. “And that was the last explosion. Either we succeeded or we failed, but it’s over.”

“Kane, Axel, what’s happening?” I mind-link them, but I do not get a response.

“Does your phone have a signal?” I ask, and Orson takes out his phone.

“No,” he shakes his head. “How long will it be until we can get out of here?” freēwebnovel.com

“Depends on what is happening on the other side of the door,” I say, standing up. “I can’t contact my mates. Stay here and keep them calm while I look into this. As soon as I am sure it’s safe, I’ll get you.”

I put my hand on the door handle and push, but it does not move an inch. Orson joins me and we try again, but it will not budge.

“Now what?” He asks, looking at me in despair.

“Well, obviously, the door’s barricaded by debris,” I state. “People know we’re in here, so they’ll come get us.”

“In other words, wait,” Orson snorts.

“I don’t feel like waiting,” I murmur, inspecting the walls. “There must be an emergency exit somewhere. Help me find it.”

We search every inch of the shelter until I finally find a blast-resistant cover with a sealed door and a heavy-duty locking mechanism. I gather all my strength, and slowly the locking mechanism unlocks. I open the door and find a dark, dusty tunnel.

“Here’s a flashlight,” Matt says, coming to my rescue. “I tested it, it works.”

“Thanks,” I smile.

“Lock this behind me,” I order Orson. “You don’t want unwanted guests.”

“Be safe,” he shouts as he locks the door.

I have never been in a tunnel, but I just decided I hate them, I realise as I run into the darkness.

“Holy shit!” I scream when a colony of bats appears out of nowhere, and I clench my wild beating heart.

“Fuckers,” I mumble as I push forward. It is ironic how I fearlessly fight the Council’s monsters, but innocent bats scare the shit out of me.

I have no idea which way I am going or where I will end up, but I am relieved when I finally reach the end of the tunnel. I climb up the ladder and sigh when there is another rusty door with which I must struggle.

“Dear Goddess, have they never heard of maintenance before?” I grunt as I fight the door open.

Fresh air and sunlight greet me when I finally succeed, and I peek my head out to see if it is safe.

“Finally,” I huff, climbing out when I realise I am outside of the facility’s borders. “It’s about time I catch a break.”

I am about to mind-link my mates when I see their wolves running my way. First, I thought they were coming to my aid, but I quickly realised their gaze was behind me, and not on me.

I swing around and suck in my breath when I see Mason. He has also shifted and is storming towards my mates.

“Not today, motherfucker,” I grunt, lifting my hands. I send a gust of wind, and Mason flies backwards. He stands up, shakes the dust off and bares his fangs.

Kane and Axel stop at my side, and I curl my fingers into their fur.

“I am going to kill him,” Kane growls, pawing at the dirt.

“No, my love,” I smile, stroking his fur. “We are going to kill him.”

I shift, and we run towards Mason. He lets out an aggressive growl, his eyes glowing gold with Alpha power, before storming us.

Just as we are about to collide with Mason, I jump into the air and land on Mason’s back, sinking my teeth into his hind leg. He yelps and bites at me, but Kane bites into his neck as Axel clenches his jaws around his front leg.

Mason collapses into the dirt, but none of us let go. With my teeth still lodged in his leg, I climb off his back.

“Pull backwards,” I mind-link my mates, and they obey without hesitation.

The air fills with Mason’s screams of agony as we each pull in a different direction. There is an unnatural snapping and tearing sound before I stammer backwards with Mason’s hind leg in my mouth. Kane rolls head over heels as he tears off Mason’s front leg. Axel jerks his head, and Mason goes silent when he rips out his trachea.

After Mason’s howling, the silence is deafening as we stare at his mangled body. I feel no remorse, no sadness, but also no joy or satisfaction.

“Are you okay, Elara?” Kane asks softly, trotting to my side. “I know you two were close once.”

“Yes, we were,” I admit. “But he has done a lot of shitty things, and he is unhealthy obsession has turned him into a monster.”

A scuffling behind me catches my attention, and I swing around in time to see two men running away.

“Mason wasn’t alone,” I say hastily, and follow them.

Kane and Axel are on my heels, and they shift when they look back and see us coming. But we still quickly catch up with them. Kane and Axel lunge forward, pushing the wolves into the dirt.

They immediately submit, bearing their necks and whimpering.

“Fuck,” Kane complains. “How are we supposed to kill them if they don’t put up a fight?”

“We don’t,” I reply. “We keep them as bait when we visit the Council.”
