Demon after demon attacks us, and all of us fight as hard as we can, but it seems like we are missing power or something because for every demon we kill two more emerge. What are we missing? The insane cackles of Keres does not help with concentration, and I keep trying to figure out what is going on. I know from mom’s bedtime story they have defeated her and her minions here before.
Why is it so hard to do now? I keep thinking about Maze, and how I have to get back to him in time as well. If he is dying from our lack of matebond then he can’t have long back. The thought hurts as my heart shatters a little every time. He cannot die from me! I won’t let him off that easily. I’m still angry with him for being a prat, but not enough to not want him anymore. I think about all of the others. All of my friends and family. They have been there for me ever since I joined the pack, and even when Maze kept pushing me away they were respectful and friendly towards me. Kristian and Leon kept defending me in front of Maze, and even told him to get his shit together one day when some of the other pack members picked on me and he acted indifferent.
I know now he tore into all of them, not the Beta’s, when I wasn’t there, but it felt nice to have someone on my side. I felt connected to them in a way I hadn’t felt in a long time. Like I was meant to be their Luna and Queen.
Winter dodge another demon and sneer at Keres as she cackles somewhere nearby.
"You are not going to make it home in time, little Queen. Sorry not sorry." She says, her smile lighting up in the dark. "Guess you failed your mate and your pack, huh. Too bad you can’t do as your mother-in-law. Oh well. I enjoyed toying with you, but now you have to die." Do as my mother-in-law?
Something hits me. Pictures from a night far away, almost a lifetime ago, but still so clear in my mind it could have been 5 minutes ago; the windy night, the torches in the ground, Selene and Inari crowing Maze and I. We are the new twice over Royals. I am Queen of wolf and fox, and I have felt like I have this hidden power inside me that is just waiting on me to call it forward. Winter agrees with me.
’I’m not sure Abby and the others were meant to be the ones who were fighting with us here. Not alone at least.’ Winter says, and I think for a split second.
’Do it.’ I tell Winter, and she leans her head back and exudes an ear piercing howl, bringing everyone in the dark field to a simultaneous stop. Winter proceeds to howl again, feeling the power rush through our body. More howls answer ours as figures suddenly appear out of nowhere. They are in wolf and fox form, and all of them walk to me, gathering around Winter.
One of them, a wolf I would recognize everywhere, pushes his head to ours in a heartfelt greeting, and then our matebond wakes in full force. Maze and Havoc. Our group joins up with the star wolves, and face off Keres and her demons. She is looking at the new arrivals with wide eyes, as if surprised at what just happened. The wolves and foxes growl and whine at the enemy, showing teeth and hackles. Keres commands her dark army to attack us, but they hesitate a second. Our numbers have greatly increased, and they know they will die if they try to attack us. Keres scream at her minions now, and they do as she says, meeting their death wherever they clash with our group. Everyone works together, and soon the enemy retracts.
"It doesn’t matter. You are going to lose anyway. The war has begun." Keres sneers at us, a manic gleam in her eyes. "And I am not letting you leave." She cackles, but it’s short lived as silver, orange, red and purple lights emit together before four women walk out of the lights. They are all looking absolutely outraged, and their sole focus is apparently Keres. She looks at all of them, but when her eyes fall on Inari she swallows hard.
"That cannot be. You’re dead." She says, her voice shaky. Inari shakes her head.
"No, but I was damn near close to you foolish brat!" The fox Goddess says with her arms crossed. "Let them go back, Keres. Now." She demands, but Keres shakes her head.
"No can do, sis. Sorry." Inari shakes her head, joins hands with the other Goddesses and chants something in a language I don’t know.
’Trust in yourself, your powers and your matebond. You are a twice over Queen and I am proud of you, my child!’ Inari says in my mind before the ground disappears under my feet and we whirl back and forth for a second. We land in the middle of the pack ground where our pack is fighting for their lives, but with no ranked members, except the older generation, to guide and lead them, they are not organized and losing fast.
Havoc walks up to me, ordering the others to fan out and get everyone in line. We are not going to fight like headless chickens and get slaughtered. They look at Winter, and she nods her head. The foxes stay with us, and bow down on their front legs in respect when the others scatter to follow Maze’s orders. Abby the Star Wolves have stayed as well.
’Abby, you and the others know best where you are most helpful. Do your worst, but leave Mira to me.’ I told my mother-in-law. Galaxy snorts and barks in answer, bowing her head to me in respect of my status as the new Queen. She turns to the others, and then they’re off. freeweɓnovel.cøm
’Alright, please raise all of you. That won’t be necessary. Thank you for coming when I called.’ I mindlink then, making sure Maze is included. I counted them for the first time and there were seven foxes. Holy damn. One of them seems very familiar, and it’s confirmed when three huge identical wolves run up and sniffs her fox up and down. The others move away from Allison a little, but I just laugh mentally. Possessive mates.
’It is our duty as the protectors of the Royal fox family to abide by our Queen when she calls us. I had no idea we would meet both the lost Queen and Princess today. We are very lucky and humble to be in your presence, your graces.’ One of the foxes, a dark red one, answers. He is definitely a male, and his words move something inside me. Lost? I have never been lost, what the hell?
’Thank you. But I have never been lost.’ I answer back, as Havoc nudges me with his snout. Something tells me this has to do with Selene and Inari being so secretive.
’Uhm, neither have I.’ Allison says, her mates surrounding her now. ’Unwanted, yes. Lost, no.’ One of the Alpha’s, Elijah, growls at this, but Allison seemingly ignores him. Or her fox does.
’You have been lost, my Princess, my Queen. We always know when and where the new Royals are born and then able to get familiar with them and protect them, but someone has been hiding your presence from us until now. We are sorry we didn’t come forth before. We felt it when you were crowned, but we were told to wait.’ I am going to have words with those two meddlesome Goddesses when all of this is over! Allison, her Alpha’s and two fox guards join up with Kristian and Alastair at the south border, clearing that for enemies before moving around the pack, and meeting us in the middle, as we do the same from the other side of the pack. No one has sighted Mira, Magoth or Narine yet, but they will show themselves sooner or later. I hope sooner, but knowing those three cowards, they will wait until the end, thinking we are too weak to fight them.
Me, Maze and four of the fox guards fight off everyone who is trying to get to innocent pack members as they get to the safe rooms around the pack.
This is going to be a very long day.
